I know in the grand scheme of things going on in the world right now, this seems minor. But, we have to have our dog put down in an hour and it’s just tipped me over the edge.

2020 has been a bad year for many of us. It started off with a late miscarriage at the end of January for me. I was 20 weeks. Then all the Covid stuff happened and I lost two close relatives in the space of a few weeks, in May. One was elderly but the other one was in her 50s with no underlying conditions, so that was a massive shock. Now this.

I know it’s been coming, he was a large breed and almost 13 so he had a good innings. I don’t know why but this has hit me even harder than everything else. I don’t know if it’s just the straw that broke the camels back. He was honestly the best dog and my best friend really. I work in a very dog friendly place so he came into work with me every day and was nearly always with me. Every day for almost 13 years. He went on holidays with us, was there when I had all the dc, he even pre-dates dh!

I just feel like giving up today. I’m going to miss him so much. The dc are devastated and been crying all morning. They’re all primary age and don’t really understand why he won’t be back. To make things worse because of covid, we can’t go into the vet so I can’t even stay with him. I have to leave him outside.

It’s just shit. Everything’s just so shit right now

Sending you lots and lots of love OP. I have a large breed dog who is only 2 and I already dread when he goes. It sounds like you gave yours the best life ever, and he must have loved coming to work with you every day. You are doing the absolute right thing, but I am so sorry you cannot be with him, I am sure the vets will show him a lot of love on your behalf.

I am also sorry about the other horrible things this year. Xxx

So sorry. A huge handhold from me. Love to you all

Eckhart · 04/06/2020 10:33

He know he's loved, Gruff. You wouldn't be posting if you didn't cherish him, and he'll be able to sense that. It sounds like he might have drifted off to another level already, at home with you.

I'm so sorry, and it's particularly heartbreaking that you can't go in with him. To him, though, it's just a little injection, he won't know what it's about.

@GruffBelow. I completely & utterly know how you feel. My beautiful big brown Newfoundland died yesterday & the whole family are completely bereft.
I haven't been able to stop crying yet & her sister is wondering round aimlessly, wondering where her sister is.
She had the most fabulous of lives with us, but I miss her more than I can express.
Sending you a very big hug, from one dog lover to another xxxx

I wanted to say how sad I am for you in your dreadful situation, and to send a virtual handhold.
At the end of March, my lovely 85 year old Mum died in hospital, not of Covid, but alone because of the pandemic.
The day after her funeral (which only 6 could attend), we had our beloved, very poorly dog (friend for over 14 years) PTS. It was absolutely heartbreaking (I am crying as I write this). We were fortunate that our vet put us in touch with a mobile vet, who came to our house (observing social distancing), and helped us with the last thing we could do for our beloved 'old girl'.
My husband commented afterwards that at least we were with her at the end. It was more than we were allowed to do for Mum.
My heart goes out to you, and as other posters have said, the vet will take very good care of him, and he will know that he is, and has always been loved.
