To want the supermarkets to open the fish counters again......

Sainsbury have had theirs closed since March and apparently have no plans to open it. Same as Morrisons. Our Asda doesn't have one.

I wanted monkfish. I had a choice between pathetic looking cod loins or skanky yellow haddock. Everything else was breaded.

I can't see why they can't have the counters open,

Staffing issues maybe?

Can’t keep staff clean
Not enough staff
Shortage of fish

Or all the above. You sound selfish

Windyatthebeach · 01/06/2020 15:55

Surely you mean shellfish?

Sparklingbrook · 01/06/2020 15:56

I believe Waitrose fish counters have been open the whole time.

Alsohuman · 01/06/2020 15:57

The fish counter in Morrisons here opened about three weeks ago. What’s selfish about wanting the bloody fish counter open?

I wish I had £1 for every time I’ve seen the word “selfish” here since lockdown. It would pay for a fortnight in a 5* hotel.

Should that be "you sound shellfish"? Smile I don't think OP is selfish in wanting some decent fresh fish!

OP, some fishmongers are operating online now, have a google you might find something local.

Unshriven · 01/06/2020 15:58

Aren't lots of fishing boats docked at the momen?

I know there are subsidies being paid to docked fishermen in Europe, some at better rates than others.

bibbitybobbitycats · 01/06/2020 15:58

Ah, Windy beat me to it!

glueandstick · 01/06/2020 15:58

Waitrose never shut.

bibbitybobbitycats · 01/06/2020 16:01

I would love to go to a good fish restaurant right now. A lovely fishy lunch or dinner, with a good bottle of crisp white wine...

I am so shellfish.

ArseholesOnToast · 01/06/2020 16:01

I’ve bought fish at the counter at Waitrose recently.

iklboo · 01/06/2020 16:04

You're whelk out of order. Clam up about it

InfiniteSheldon · 01/06/2020 16:04

Depends on the fishermen being able to work, the fish markets being open and the hauliers. Its not just the fish counter.

ACautionaryTale · 01/06/2020 16:11

Don't have a Waitrose particularly near me - one thing I miss from where I used to live.

Urgh I hate fish, but our local fishmonger is open, as is the fish stall. Maybe look for smaller supplier rather than the supermarket?

Shoxfordian · 01/06/2020 16:17

I've been ordering from the fish society online, comes frozen and is really good

Perisoire · 01/06/2020 16:19

YABU. Let supermarkets manage themselves z

FrodoTheDodo · 01/06/2020 16:25

The 'special' counters at my local Tesco closed last year. I miss fresh mussels and oysters!

vanillandhoney · 01/06/2020 16:28

They're not all closed, I think it must be store dependent.

They are difficult to keep clean at the best of times though. I used to work on one and I would never, ever buy fish off a fish counter Grin

UnfinishedSymphon · 01/06/2020 16:34

We've got a cracking fishmongers in our area, she delivers too.

Doesn't help you though...sorry

pigsDOfly · 01/06/2020 16:34

Totally beyond me why the OP sound selfish, or shellfish, to miss the fresh fish counter in the Supermarket.

I also miss the fresh fish counter in Tesco. The staff at my local Tesco fish counter are brilliant and know their fish if you asked questions about something like the best way of cooking certain fish, for example.

The prepacked fish is horrible compared to the fresh counter fish and I miss the choice as well, which you certainly don't get in prepacked fish.

BarbaraofSeville · 01/06/2020 16:34

If you have a fishmongers in a market near you, they should have it, providing that it's available. I don't know if it is seasonal or otherwise restricted in availability.

Or we have a man selling fresh fish out of a van in the carpark of one of the local farm shops. Anything like that where you are?

needtohelphusband · 01/06/2020 16:35

Our fishmonger is open is there one near by

SallyWD · 01/06/2020 16:38

Yes waitrose fish counters open.

Dugsbollox · 01/06/2020 16:39

Our local fishmonger delivers too, maybe a way to go. I have to say, one of the unexpected (re)discoveries of all this is how much nicer the produce is from local butchers/fruit shop etc. And they've done brilliant jobs in helping get food to people who can't get out. I'll be using them much more regularly from now.

ODFOx · 01/06/2020 16:44

Do you have an Iceland warehouse, or even a normal Iceland? You won't get monkfish but they have a decent selection of 5 or 6 fish which aren't breaded and even when most of the freezers were bare of all the breaded things there was plenty of nice looking unprocessed fish fillets/whole trout/seafood etc.
