AIBU?

To want the supermarkets to open the fish counters again......

Sainsbury have had theirs closed since March and apparently have no plans to open it. Same as Morrisons. Our Asda doesn't have one.

I wanted monkfish. I had a choice between pathetic looking cod loins or skanky yellow haddock. Everything else was breaded.

I can't see why they can't have the counters open,

My nearest Sainsburys can't re-open their fresh fish/meat counter as its now the Argos Click and Collect section Grin. Its also freezing so I pity the poor staff who have to work in that area! Never been particularly busy when I've been in though so maybe the fish will make a return

Try Sole of Discretion in Plymouth, a collective of local fishermen, or Pengelly's of Looe. Good quality fish...it's how I've been keeping my Mum supplied in lockdown. Both have websites or you can order by phone.

Thanks all. Our nearest Waitrose is 16 miles away - and whilst I previously did shop there, it currently a seaside town in the southwest that is a bit precious about people going there during lockdown. The police are often doing random stops on the way in.

I used to use our local butchers - award winning. It had a wet fish counter but as they need more space for the main butcher/farm shop area during social distancing, its often closed.

I might need to look online however its funny. Whilst I'll buy almost everything else online, I like to actually go out to buy and inspect food. I might have to reconsider at the moment,

maybe op cant be arsed to shop around..

Or may be she lives some where like I do where I would have to drive 30 to 40 mins to another town as the town I live in doesn't have a fishmonger, or decent butcher.

My local Morrisons has had theirs open for weeks, and now the pie shop so I don’t have to buy 4 sausage rolls at a time!

@FangsForTheMemory - I never said you posted it was selfish. It's the 'is that all you've got to worry about' posts ad nauseum all over MN. Like nobody is allowed to have a minor gripe. I've got no intention of 'reporting'. Nothing to report.

@iklboo I didn't use the word selfish, and didn't imply it either. If you've got a problem with what I posted, why not report it?

And good luck with that.

We an independent have a deli/cafe which also sells fresh fish, only a small selection and not everyday, the owner serves you.

Ours are all open in supermarkets and high street - but we live on the coast

If that's the biggest problem you've got in the midst of all the COVID issues, I think you should count yourself lucky.

And another £1 for the cocktail @Alsohuman

I ordered some mussels from a Cornish company called fish for thought, James Martin was talking about them on this morning, minimum order was £35.00 with free delivery so we shared an order with family. I was very impressed they do all sorts of fish and sustainable too.

Have you thought about ordering from a local fishmonger? Where I am there are plenty delivering to your home.

And where my parents and in-laws live there aren't any at all. Not all areas of the country are the same as yours.

just feel its a bit selfish with all that going on

That’s another £1 towards the next cocktail ...

YABU OP. Don't you know that under the "rules" of the lockdown as decreed by Facebook you must be happy to live off bread and water and not make any complaints. Failure to do so will have you marked as a reprehensible citizen.

My local fishmonger is open, any near you?

op says she cant see why they can't have counters open.....so gave her a few examples of why maybe they aren't

retail staff have been through enough.....now they are expected to be back to 'normal' as well as managing social distancing, customers (!) extra deliveries and a possible reduced staff level depending on those self isolating/shielding/no childcare/hastily employed

just feel its a bit selfish with all that going on

My local Asda closed their's in February. They are changing it to a coffee shop.

I have no idea why as it very small supermarket and it doesn't take more then an hour to go in, do your shopping and pay for it. Surely you can do your shopping without coffee.

Where I work we have had to close our deli because we could not maintain the correct distance between staff so the whole area is being redesigned. The cost is huge tbh so I can see why places have closed areas until things are more settled

Our fishmongers are open - lots of fresh fish and shellfish available.
So I think it is maybe specific to you local supermarket rather than a nationwide 'no fresh fish' issue.

We've had a local fishmonger delivering but tuna steaks are probably the most exotic fish he's got right now. I've been bbq'ing king prawns marinaded in chilli oil and having them with a white Rioja. That's a ritual for me

Asda announced they were closing their fish counters before Covid and lockdown was even a thing, deli counters are in general massive loss makers for the retails. The theory is they should drive more footfall, but that’s not really the case anymore
