I think I must have weirdly shaped hands, because I can't seem to arrange one to make it look like a W and a P at all!

Surprised by the suggestion upthread that not being massively enthusiastic about antifa is problematic though. Their idea seems to be that there are certain people whose beliefs make them fair game for violence. Which strikes me as very dodgy territory indeed.

iklboo · 01/06/2020 16:54

Some berk on FB has said 'Yeah, but, police kill more white people in the USA thank black people'.

That's because statistically there are about 72% white people in The States compared to around 12% black. So, proportionately, more black people are killed. Idiot.

sixthtimelucky · 01/06/2020 16:58

I hate 'all lives matter' at the best of times, but right now - fuck off the fuck off if that's all you have to say.

Oh got it! Actually I can’t quite form that shape so perhaps that’s why I couldn’t see it before. Probably just as well given what it means to some people. Will now stop sitting here trying to make white power signs to myself Confused

It was probably my awful description!

I say “if that is the case, why aren’t you protesting again police brutality.. “ 🤔

The OK sign is using in diving.

Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel · 01/06/2020 17:43

Only racists and absolute thickos use All Lives Matter

iklboo · 01/06/2020 18:03

One woman on the FB page has justified it by saying 'black men commit the majority of violent crime in the USA'.

She also wants the woman who threatened to tell police the guy in Central Park was 'a black man was attacking her' to get her job and dog back.

Mayorquimby2 · 01/06/2020 18:20

The ok thing has a bit of a meta origin.

It started on a sub reddit as an injoke where they tried to make up something ridiculous and get lazy journalists and Twitter activists to repeat it as fact.

Life began to imitate art because by it being repeated often or retweeted, the actual white power and alt right groups began to use it believing they were following a genuine trend from people who were of the same views as them.

So it was picked because it was so ridiculous that anyone reporting it could be mocked for believing for a second it could be true, and then it actually became true.

Mayorquimby2 · 01/06/2020 18:22

Sorry 4chan, not reddit

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 01/06/2020 18:40

Whenever I see All Lives Matter as a response I want to scream. It's Black Lives Matter not Black Lives are worth more than any other lives ffs. And clearly they don't in a lot of places as this has yet again shown. Sorry, not helpful rant there.

To anyone who counteracts with ‘All Lives Matter’..
GreytExpectations · 01/06/2020 18:47

I've always hated people saying all lives matter. They really don't understand the point and are too privaledged to realise why it should be Black lives matter.
I think what is more disspointing is only recently have people started realising all lives matter is wrong to say, plenty of people used to say it a couple years ago and now they have realised it wrong, good they are educating themselves but why is it taking so long? That's the issue. Racism in both America and UK is still happening and situations that would happen in the 1950s are still happening now in 2020. White people need to realise they actually have to join in the movement to make things chance. Complacency and denial is a massive part of the problem.

NewYearNewTwatName · 01/06/2020 18:48

The guy in these two clips is the sort of person I associate with the "all lives matter" people

m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=10158217755076745&id=712081744

I have no words.

GreytExpectations · 01/06/2020 18:50

Just to add, I also think people saying "they don't see colour" are just as bad as the All lives matter brigade Angry

JustFrigginNameChange · 01/06/2020 18:50

@SimonJT

See
The OK hand symbol stems from the phrase 'It's okay to be white'

It wasn't officially created to look like a W and P, that association was later made but not by the original creators.

FudgeBrownie2019 · 01/06/2020 18:50

I've seen so many analogies on Twitter over the last day or two about the "all lives matter" but my favourite is the one about houses on fire and which ones do the fire brigade focus on. And as crass as that analogy is, it works.

White privilege is an absolute fact of life. If you're white and you don't see white privilege, you need to reassess your focus because when you start to see it, it's everywhere.

GreytExpectations · 01/06/2020 18:57

Privaledge is when you think something is not a problem because it isnt a problem to you.
It is ridiculously ignorant and dismissive. I'm really fed up of having to argue with white people about why their privaledge is the problem. They either don't understand it so ignore it or they get overly offended and ignore it. People need to realise ignoring the issue is part of the problem.

Also, I highly reccomend the book "Why I'm not longer talking to white people about race" by Reni Eddo-lodge.

Thisseatisnotavailable · 01/06/2020 19:21

That first video made me cry. I had a heart breaking conversation with my dh the other night, he is mixed race and we have 2 children, one of which looks fully white in appearance and he was saying how glad he was that she doesn't look like him. So sad.

3LittleMonkeyz · 01/06/2020 19:25

I have always told my friends that I DO see race. I don't think it should matter, but There are people who do and acknowledging our difference experiences and my privilege as a white person does not divide us. We should all be treated the same, but we aren't, and nobody benefits from denying the existence of the problem.

GimmeAy · 01/06/2020 20:55

I don't think pitching white against black is in any way helpful.

Binterested · 01/06/2020 20:59

I don’t think it’s pitching black against white.

Binterested · 01/06/2020 21:01

We all can accept that black lives have been seen as more disposable - at least if you look at US police behaviour. This is saying Black Lives Matter as much as anyone else’s life. That has not been a truism - amazingly. It’s shocking that that statement even needs to be spelled out.
