To ditch a friend over the Thermomix cult.

My friend has been brainwashed firstly to spend an incredible amount of money on a thermomix and then has signed up to convert others to do the same. Is it not pyramid scheme ?
Nothing she posts all over SM or says in RL is without some reference to the overpriced appliance. In my favour we live faraway from each other but wait...she found me a local dealer. I do not trust things sold in this way nor feel comfortable with the concept of only being able to purchase something through another cult member having attended their special induction.

I don’t understand why you need to ditch her? My friend sells forever living. She added me to a group and tags me in a monthly raffle. I just ignore. She’s just making extra cash. If I want to participate occasionally I do.

Just be a grownup and say “oh no I’m not interested but good luck”

Are they the mixers that make mayonnaise? I used to watch those videos mesmerised.

I love my thermomix and use it all the time but I would never try and persuade other people to buy one as it is crazily expensive and only worth buying if you can afford it (I got it for my 40th birthday present). I just went to the shop and bought mine. I don’t really get the whole person coming to show you how to use it thing. If you know how to cook already it is pretty easy to use.

It's not a pyramid scheme and people can buy them without seeing them, it's just that it can be hard to understand the functions without seeing them demonstrated. I understand your skepticism though!

I know a number of people who own one and they all love them. Often they choose to sell them because they want to share their experience with them but there's no reward for recruiting people, only for sales.

And no, I'm not a 'dealer', they are just extremely popular in Australia so you see them quite a bit. I spotted them on UK masterchef too and there are a number of popular chefs here who use them.

Yes I have seen them on Masterchef too but it's not the product itself I am worried about. It is the way it is has turned a perfectly ordinary person into a obsessive.

Is this the modern day version of the Kirkby vacuum cleaner for anyone who remembers those (massively expensive vacuum cleaner sold by demonstration in the 1970s* - the dealer would come to your house and show how crap your existing vacuum was by vacuuming your carpet or possibly cleaning it and getting an alarming amount of muck out of it).

A friend's DM bought one in the 1970s/1980s and I seem to remember that they were £500 then, which was a month or two's salary at the time.

It does seem a bit extreme to ditch your friend over this, but perhaps there is more of a back story between the two of you.

Hard to get excited over soemthing that can be replaced by a pan.

It's absolutely massive over here (they sell around 50,000 a year), the UK operation is much calmer as far as I can tell.

The commission is really good too, from what I hear. They cost around $2000 here and the consultants can get nearly $400 per appliance sold, so it's actually quite a good source of income for people who want a part time role.

Oh I am so with you on this. My In-laws are part of the cult. I really can’t see the point of spending a thousand pounds on a glorified Stick blender And pan combo. They bang on about it every time we see them so one time I asked if I could have a try on theirs. Ooooh no, they said, you have to sit through a two hour demo first. Well excuse me, I have a PhD, I’m sure I can work out how to use a fucking cooking pot on my own.

I bought mine 4 years ago and I love it ! It’s like having a cooking assistant in the kitchen !

Actually I think they were people who don’t really like cooking. They certainly take all of the pressure out of it for me. And they’re not even very laborsaving since you still have to do all of the donkey work of peeling the veg and stuff.

And fuck me but the recipes are ridiculous. Does it really matter if you do 25 seconds on speed eight rather than 30 seconds on speed seven?

They are a MLM so yes I would ditch her until she regains her mind.
