AIBU?

To ditch a friend over the Thermomix cult.

habibihabibi · 01/06/2020 06:53

My friend has been brainwashed firstly to spend an incredible amount of money on a thermomix and then has signed up to convert others to do the same. Is it not pyramid scheme ?
Nothing she posts all over SM or says in RL is without some reference to the overpriced appliance. In my favour we live faraway from each other but wait...she found me a local dealer. I do not trust things sold in this way nor feel comfortable with the concept of only being able to purchase something through another cult member having attended their special induction.
I ditched others over Forever Living.

It’s quite weird to ditch friends over Thermonix and Forever Living. Maybe look at your own issues?

thewirecutter.com/reviews/thermomix-what-to-know-before-you-buy/

Is an interesting review of what they're actually like (a bit like a which report.) Maybe good for those who aren't really into cooking. Cant use normal recipes really...

I have been tempted by an instapot though if we had space!

Just googled it, I'm not sure what you pay £1200 for?

I bought DH one some years ago, he loved it. I bought it direct, got a few emails with recipes and asked if we wanted a demo. The end. Just tell her you don't want one

Unfollow her on social media or put her on snooze for 30 days on facebook. When you've done that 2 or 3 times she'll be over it. IME people never last long selling these things.
I've had various friends start up selling MLM stuff on facebook and I just snooze them straight away.

In real life just keep saying you're not interested until she gets the message.

Are these real friends or just Facebook acquaintances? Why would you need to ‘ditch’ them?

For £1200 I could pay a chef to come and cook for me for a month. Grin.

Seriously though I don’t understand this idea of ditching friends because they’ve become involved in any kind of MLM. So it’s not your thing. And? Just ignore the MLM stuff and pay attention to the rest.

You might not agree with MLM but people are free to try and earn a living through it if they please.

i have challenged acquaintances over their MLM’s and been blocked by them but if someone was a good friend to me then it wouldn’t occur to me to end the friendship over it.

In fact I have a friend who does Herbalife. I have no inclination towards anything to do with it, but whether I agree with it or not he’s lost a phenomenal amount of weight, and has been persistently selling it for about ten years now.

But he’s one of my oldest friends. He doesn’t push it on me and I don’t criticise him.

Live and let live...

It's just so cringy when people get into to mlms. I just ignore as I've had people in the past get very offended if you point out that it is a mlm.

Oh, you have brought back memories with the Kirby!

My DPs (in their 80s at the time) were preyed on by a Kirby salesman. They paid out ££££ on one but they are huge heavy things, they couldn't carry it upstairs and it was too heavy to push.
I rang the Co and gave them what for and demanded they collect it and pay back every penny.
They did.

I love my Thermo, it has changed the way we shop, cook and eat.

I have never experienced a hard sell - saw one demo and fell in love. Worth every $ imho, but wouldn't ever push that opinion on someone or worse, put it out there on SM.

Excessive enthusiasm sustained over time for an inanimate object or range of inanimate objects is quite exhausting even before the uncomfortable idea that a friendship has warped into a transactional sales based relationship.

If she's an old friend who genuinely was a friend before she became involved with selling kitchen appliances then don't ditch her, just don't react to anything on this topic beyond saying straightforwardly that you're not interested and would like to talk about something else.

Isn’t it just a very expensive pan?

She’s just making extra cash

Unlikely that she's in the 1% which actually does make money from Forever Living and similar.

Yes Thermomix is a MLM.

If your friend won't take no for an answer, and won't heed calls to stop adding you, tagging you, speaking to you about it, trying to get you to join her team what else can you do but ditch her?

@BarbaraofSeville we had a Kirby salesman call in the early 90s - friend had given him my name, which was apparently the only way to get rid of them if you didn’t buy the thing. He wanted £800 for it, which seemed a ridiculous amount of money to spend on a vacuum cleaner. You could still get a fairly decent second hand car for that then. He finally left our house around midnight. It was a horrible experience!

It's the best appliance ever. One appliance to weigh, mix, heat, knead, steam, whisk so it uses so much less space in the kitchen than if you had an appliance for each. You can't burn or over cook on it because of the timer. I use it for normal cooking, although DS did love cooking with the prompts when he was little. Would replace it immediately if it ever broke, although I've had it over 10 years and no sign of wear yet.
Just tell her you're not interested though.

Ignore it. She’s making a nob of herself with her obsessive posts, mentions and general chat about her stupid product from the MLM scam.
If she wants to be suckered by it, fine. Just firmly tell her you don’t want one then ignore anything she does or says pertaining to it.

Just looked this appliance up. An uglier hunk of plastic you could not find...nor a more pointless spend either.
I’ve got a rice cooker too. It’s a pot.

We are in Portugal and considering one on the racing of friends. Our children have grown up so it’s mostly just the 2 of us and it sounds very good for effortlessly making home cooked food for small numbers.
I’m considering the previous version to the latest one as I understand it’s difficult to depart from their step by step in built app and we would both want the freedom to cook creatively.
Over here I think you only buy them from a shop, and yes, they are called Bimby here.
I haven’t got as far as the demo, daren't go in case we get sucked in and I don’t want to spend that money yet.

  • one of the raving friends is a lifelong good cook and excellent hostess so I don’t think it’s only for muppets who can’t cook.

I wouldnt drop her as a friend but id think a lot less of any of my friends who started flogging mlm shit....i have an acquaintance on fb peddling Yooooooooooonique....it really is cringey watching her begging for people to buy the shit make up so she can get to her next 'promotion'....the only people buying are her immediate family.
Id rather be on the bones of my arse than exploiting friends and family so i can make money.
