AIBU?

To ditch a friend over the Thermomix cult.

habibihabibi · 01/06/2020 06:53

My friend has been brainwashed firstly to spend an incredible amount of money on a thermomix and then has signed up to convert others to do the same. Is it not pyramid scheme ?
Nothing she posts all over SM or says in RL is without some reference to the overpriced appliance. In my favour we live faraway from each other but wait...she found me a local dealer. I do not trust things sold in this way nor feel comfortable with the concept of only being able to purchase something through another cult member having attended their special induction.
I ditched others over Forever Living.

@SheWranglesRugRats and how on earth would you know that ?!? I might be Nigella bloody Lawson for all you know !!

You might be, but you have no idea how much cooking other people on here do so your argument is groundless. I cook two meals from scratch a day, have two kids, and work full time. I just don't cook meals that need grinding or liquidising Hmm.

@shewranglesrugrats - oh for goodness sakes, it isn’t about how you and how much you are churning out in the kitchen, a number of PPs have already stated the machine does a lot more than the functions you have described. It’s you that has no idea, otherwise why would they be so popular on the Continent, Australia and elsewhere ? My only gripe with Thermomix is that it’s set up as a MLM to maximise profit and sells a dream to all those reps out there (including OPs friend).

No one's ever tried to sell me something this way or tried to thrust their MLM on me (not entirely sure what that is but I get the gist).

The thing I really like about my thermomix is how neatly it fits in the hall cupboard with my Nespresso, George Forman grill, aerofryer, sandwich toaster, and Nutribullet. So easy to dust them all at once.

@rightmovenewbie I know more about bloody thermomixes than I ever wanted to because my ILs never stop bloody banging on about them. Your suggestion that people who don't fall for the overpriced pile o'shite somehow can't manage to cook from scratch without it is laughable.

I live in Germany and people are obsessed with them here! It sounds vile to me, you know how everything has that weird slow cooker taste (probably from the slowly boiled onions/garlic) when you cook it in the slow cooker, I imagine that but for everything you cook. It's by this company called Vorwerk who, to their credit, make things which last FOREVER - we had some relic 1960s hoover from them in the first flat we lived in here, but they are also the frumpiest and most German company ever.

You have to buy the chips to put the recipes in which also cost a bomb Confused Every so often the local rep posts in our FB group offering a Thermomix demo and baking session.

I mean fair enough if you're interested but I think they are bizarre and never want to own one.

One friend who goes on about getting one with stars in her eyes, to be fair, is envious of the fact it can do what her (approximately 5-6) other kitchen gadgets can do in one gadget. If you have so many gadgets then probably it is the perfect thing for you.

@BarbaraofSeville

TBF the Kirby vacuum cleaners were bloody brilliant. My mother still has one that she bought in 1991 and it’s still going strong.

You get what you pay for...

my relatives in germany have them.
they do some things really well tbh, thermomix rice pudding for example.

so far I have managed to escape, though have been invited for a fair few demonstrations.
I guess if you eat a lot of soups and sauces and milk puddings it's great. but I like more variety in my food Wink

Ok, we have a Thermomix and really like it. DH and I are both decent but not brilliant cooks and it's certainly helped to shake up our family meals.

It was shockingly expensive, but I reserve my right to have it Smile. We found the rep who arranged the sale and we only ever heard from her once afterwards (an email a week later, asking if it was working ok).

Your friend does sound a bit obsessive in her quest to sell them, but you can always just ignore or even block her SM posts. I wouldn't waste any more time thinking about it.

@WitchQueenofDarkness yes I saw that. If you get six customers you earn your Thermomix. So it’s the usual question: who exactly is the customer?

There’s definitely a “beginner’s luck” thing in pyramid businesses which can make them feel viable in the early days. If someone signs up and taps into their contacts for the first time it might well be possible to achieve early sales (6 customers for example), it’s what happens next when that person is invested emotionally in the company and has exhausted their social network that’s telling. Product sales nearly always dry up especially when the cost is high and there are other Cheaper options easily accessible in retail stores. I wonder how much the starter kit is (that you need to buy before incurring the other costs of “earning” your Thermomix?!).

The person I know who has signed up to this has done so because her DH has lost his job so I know this isn’t just a hobby to her. She’s not hassling me because she knows what I think. She’s has told me she is against MLM ever since she was approached by an Arbonne Hun who had heard about her cancer diagnosis and immediately got in touch to try and sell her “wellness“ bollocks. I think she’s quite easily swayed and of course worried about her DH, so vulnerable to schemes that look like they’re the easiest way to establishing a business. Feel pretty concerned for her. I’ll be quietly watching and hopefully be able to support her later. I hope your friend is OK @habibihabibi

I find it most useful for pastry/cakes/bread, things that you would otherwise have to get your hands into and are hard work (I have arthritis in thumbs). Use if for everything except pan frying though really.

Ahhhuh mute her on socials and just shut her down with regards to finding the local consultant cheeky fuckery by saying you don't have the spare cash ( gah impending global recession v overpriced kitchen gadget) - if she keeps pressing then good riddance.
My whole social circle & family bought one - enthusiasm wanes after a year of two. But it's hard going til then... (butter chicken or custard anyone.... revolutionary sarcasm)
Full disclosure - I borrowed my mothers for a extended period and it's not for me and cost is obscene in my opinion. Would be very good kitchen aid for elderly/mobility issues tho to be fair.
But they don't call it a thermo cult for nothing!

They make it sound so easy don't they - only six sales and you've paid for it. In reality I can't think of any one of my friends who'd buy one (even though they most could well afford to.).

@MeganBacon - I find my late MIL's Kenwood does all that and more.

If it's Twitter she's being annoying on mute the word Thermomix. Then you miss all those tweets. I do it with people I like who go on a lot about things I don't care about.

I get you, OP. My neighbour once tried to hook me into a demo. I was noncommittal and she came ringing on the door on the big day. I had to pretend to be ill.

I also had a friend who got sucked into the Jehovah’s Witnesses, and I drifted away because it became impossible to have a conversation that didn’t involve attempts to pull me in.

@Rightmovenewbie I think they have several model of vacuum cleaner, including the robot one now. I had the hard body Kobold model. It was amazing.

ok @Rightmovenewbie just for you i looked at the Vorwerk website but the model we had is obvs not available any more. Basically it was an upright which could separated out, and you could attach a strap and use it like a kind of Ghostbuster device. It wasn't bagless, but it really sucked Wink
