That is worse than childbirth?

Just trying to ease my anxieties over giving birth, due this week!

I hate the unknown and not having a client what level of pain to expect. I know every labour is different but I cant sleep and thought I'd ask!

OP posts:

Gallstones. Pain so bad I physically couldn't stand and was vomiting. Made worse by the fact that I had no idea how long that the attacks would last for.

Mischance · 04/07/2020 10:58

Thrombosed heamorrhoids - ouch and double ouch!

Walkerbean16 · 04/07/2020 11:01

Persiaclementine · 04/07/2020 11:01

I think if I had to have javimlin arse for the length of labour then that would be worse than normal child birth

Lucyccfc68 · 04/07/2020 11:08

Had to have a chest drain put in after suffering from a punctured lung.

I would give birth 100 times over rather than have another chest drain put in. I couldn’t talk about it without crying for about 12 months after. It really traumatised me. They numb the spot where they do it, but then just basically ram what looks like a big pair of scissors through your chest from the side. It caused nerve damage, which means that I have a numb patch under my arm.

Makes me laugh when I see this being done on tv programmes and the patient just lies there all calm. It’s horrendous.

I remember every detail of it and still cringe, but never even think about giving birth.

ittooshallpass · 04/07/2020 11:18

Back spasms. Give me childbirth any day. And mine ended in an emergency c-section.

Flutterpieandpinkieshy · 04/07/2020 11:29

Hi OP.

I found that labour isn't so bad. Its slow and steady at first and then builds. The pain for me really only got intense towards 7-8cm dilated.. I got to 7cm on my own at home and I have the worst pain threshold ever! I found the pushing stages to be better as I was able to be active and focus on pushing the baby out... Also, I had a water birth and honestly can't say I remember any pain at all from the crowning... Just an intense pressure in my rectum.

It's natural, your body is built to birth a baby, though at the time I can tell you you won't find it magical, nor will you find it pleasant. It'll be one of the hardest things you'll ever do but once LO is born you really do forget the pain.

Stegasaurusmum · 04/07/2020 11:37

Haven't ead all the replies... But hypnobirthing, please, try it, even if it's just to help keep you calm.
I had a vbac with my son, at home, in the pool, I'd never had any experience of labour at all, I woke at 3am straight into 3 min apart contractions, very very intense. As soon as I f got in the water and used the techniques, it all went. My knees hurt more than the contractions, from kneeling in the water, honestly. I had 2 paracetamol through 12 hrrs of active labour.
Crowning hurt, but lots of swearing and staying in the water helped that. He was a big ish baby, 8lb 15oz, I'm quite petite, but I honestly would have happily done it again.
Honestly, the hypnobirthing and the water definitely made it bearable.

MermaidUnicorn · 04/07/2020 11:38

Having a coil inserted. Would take labour over that anyday.

Pambalambalam · 04/07/2020 11:54

I had a completely drug free labour and birth (not through choice, I was having a home birth and the midwife decided I wasn’t in proper labour and disappeared, and only just made it back in time a couple of hours later as I was pushing baby out, and there was no time for pain relief then). I can honestly say I’ve had much worse pain from toothache and gallstones. Labour pain and actual birth were intense but bearable.

EuphieKat · 04/07/2020 14:04

Same for me NorthernBird. Had a quadruple discectomy (which did vaguely help on one side) but they pop in and out all the time causing huge spasms. Then there’s the constant pain caused by the nerve damage...Keep going, fellow back painers!

Frogshoe · 04/07/2020 22:44

@thenightsky me too! Couldn’t do the physio and ended up with a blood clot too! I’m definitely not having the other replaced. Having babies was easy compared to that

mrsBtheparker · 04/07/2020 23:04

Coccyx, I fell ice-skating as a newly wed 52 years ago and it's still bothering me.

Plantar fasciitis, the pain that feels like permanently standing on lego in the dark, it happens in the instep and can go on for months.

thenightsky · 04/07/2020 23:32

@Frogshoe I too got a bleed into the muscle. Nightmare. However, 7 months down the line, I'm glad I did it and am now facing having the other hip replaced as I recognise the symptoms. 2 years max.

elgreco · 04/07/2020 23:35

Root canal with insufficient anaesthesia, didn't last as long as labour though. She stopped drilling when the screaming started!

Induced labour with no pain relief was horrendous, everything cramped.

2020iscancelled · 04/07/2020 23:37

Mastitis was worse in terms of searing pain, my god it was fucking horrendous on and off stabbing hot pins of hell straight through my nipples and across my chest. It was a straight 9/10 on pain scale - ie. I wanted to rip my own head off

Childbirth - hmm, a 7/8/9 for contractions until I got a bit of gas n air and then down to a 5/6 with a shot of something or other. Took the edge off beautifully.

Yes childbirth has some painful elements but your body knows what to do and if worst comes to worst they have DRUGS. The drugs are amazing- even just the lower level stuff.

I think there must be plenty of more painful things than childbirth. After all, it’s something your body naturally knows how to do - breaking all your limbs at once isn’t Confused

Misbeehived · 04/07/2020 23:40

Really wasn’t as bad as I was expecting. Was lucky enough to give birth in the midwife centre and despite being quite anti really found the birthing pool the best pain relief for what there was. Couldn’t get in rhythm with my tens machine and vomited dramatically with gas and air. Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy and giving birth.

NoWordForFluffy · 04/07/2020 23:41

Tearing my shoulder tendon is absolutely the most pain I've ever experienced (fell down stairs, whacked elbow as I landed, tearing the supraspinatus). I saw a white flash of pain. Hideous.

Mnhealth202020 · 04/07/2020 23:44

A car ran over my foot at speed. Immediately after I was walking around as normal(!) - think it was just an adrenaline rush as 20 minutes later, the pain was excruciating. Any sort of foot movement brought tears to my eyes - and I have a high pain tolerance. I was wincing and limping about as it was a hilly area and the slope just increased the pain tenfold. I even cried in public over the pain (which is not in my nature). Nothing was even broken as well.

just5morepeas · 04/07/2020 23:58

Gallstones, which then blocked my pancreas and I got pancreatitis which was even more painful than the gallstones.

I was induced twice giving birth but it was no where near as bad as gallstones.

JaJaDingDong · 05/07/2020 00:14

Toothache. And also the breast abscess I had after having DS.
In all honesty, childbirth wasn't as bad as I'd been led to believe. People only tell you their horror stories. They don't talk about easy births so much.

whatisheupto · 05/07/2020 00:22

No, sorry. Nowhere near. But then I had complications which meant I had no break in between contractions so quite literally did not have the chance to catch my breath/ gather my strength for the next one.... After hours of non stop agony I had an epidural and it was the most blessed relief... I honestly could not have carried on (but again, severe complications that would have finished me off had I lived in a different era).

hibeat · 05/07/2020 00:34

dental pain.

Designerenvy · 05/07/2020 00:43

I've had 3 natural deliveries with no epidural ( medical reasons, not choice ! ) .
The first was the toughest, it was pain like I'd never experienced but I got through it, you'll get through and you'll have an amazing little person who you will adore and they will love you unconditionally, nothing can beat that ! So, it's all worth it and the memories of the pain obviously fade because I went on to have 2 more Wink

I've had appendicitis and I think that pain was worse, maybe because I didn't have the pleasure of a baby at the end of it all !

I've had 2 really bad tooth abscesses since and I can honestly say that pain was definitely worse than labour.

So, there is worse pain out there. You can do this, we are stronger than we think .
Best of luck Flowers

ViveLEntenteCordiale · 05/07/2020 00:48

Worst pain ever was waking up after a calcaneal osteotomy, where they sawed through my foot and pinned it together again (unsuccessfully, it transpired). There were doctors there in recovery pumping the drugs in but they weren't doing it fast enough! I hear bone pain is one of the worst. For me, other bad pain has been accidents - detaching some ligaments in the same ankle, and tearing tendons in my hip. Then a herniated disc in my back. And endometriosis. That should definitely be on the McGill pain scale, which in my experience was otherwise pretty accurate.
