That is worse than childbirth?

Just trying to ease my anxieties over giving birth, due this week!

I hate the unknown and not having a client what level of pain to expect. I know every labour is different but I cant sleep and thought I'd ask!

Gosh yes, loads worse than childbirth. There is also the fact that at least with childbirth you know it will come to an end, there are some pains with no end in sight: intractible pain. "Intractable pain refers to a type of pain that can't be controlled with standard medical care. Intractable essentially means difficult to treat or manage. This type of pain isn't curable, so the focus of treatment is to reduce your discomfort. "

Childbirth is a means to an end, different for everyone. Some don't have very long or painful labours, others do with all sorts of complications but with all, it will be over eventually.

Please don't worry about your labour, you've no idea how it will be when it happens. If all is proceeding normally a positive attitude helps and you work with it. Make sure you manage it all your way, whatever is most comfortable for you and don't go into hospital too early!

Good luck.

Viral meningitis

soundsystem · 04/07/2020 05:36

Having my wisdom teeth out.

Gallstones.

Grabbing a hot pan handle and burning my palm.

That's just off the top on my head - I could probably think of a lot more!

BigKnickers87 · 04/07/2020 06:39

Pre eclampsia chest pain was pretty up there but not as bad as labour, the pain is horrific. But I’ve had two kids and live to tell the tale so it’s worth it, but I’m euphoric that I never have to do it again!

Notajogger · 04/07/2020 07:02

No - sciatica is not as bad as being induced - I overreacted to the drugs though and had an awful labour. 5-10 seconds between contractions and I honestly wanted to die.
I'd like to know what "normal" labour pain is like though - maybe next time! Grin

Scarlettpixie · 04/07/2020 07:23

Broken ribs. Gallstones.

Labour is painful but for me was no where near as bad as I expected. I used the birthing pool and had gas and air. In between contractions I was chatting to DH and the midwife. I remember the midwife saying, we had better turn this fan off as baby will be here soon and me thinking ‘really, so soon?’ as I expected it to be so much worse. The last bit was intense but i was in ‘the zone’ by then and DS was out with a couple of big pushes. It was really positive. I never said ‘never again’ like some do for a bit after giving birth..

Bearlyawake · 04/07/2020 07:33

I've just ended up in hospital because my fibroid had twisted, utterly excruciating and much worse than childbirth. Can't wait for the thing to be removed.

feliciabirthgiver · 04/07/2020 07:50

Gallstones, had gas and air and morphine. Tooth Abscess was truly dreadful and only slightly eased by codeine.

On the other hand I have given birth twice with no pain relief (not even gas and air) and the pain stops immediately once they are born and you can be sat at home with your new baby and tea and toast feeling a million dollars within hours. It's the most wonderful experience - good luck.

Igotthemheavyboobs · 04/07/2020 08:07

I enjoyed giving birth, it didn't hurt that much tbh.

The wrist pain I have now far outweighs it, as does toothache and the uncomfortableness when you have a UTI. My son is only 10 weeks old so it's not been so long I have forgotten Grin

You will be fine OP! Good luck!

Cricketmum84 · 04/07/2020 08:11

@Neome viral meningitis here too. I would rather give birth to quads backwards than go through that pain again.

AaronBurrSirr · 04/07/2020 08:13

I gave birth 10 days ago and honestly, it wasn’t as awful as I was expecting! Gas and air was brilliant and the worst part for me was the feeling of needing a poo and not being allowed to have one! At no point did I feel I couldn’t do it.

I had gastroenteritis when I was 7-9 weeks pregnant and I’d choose childbirth over that any day.

Kidney infection (2 days after I gave birth) was shivering so much I split my stitches.

Piglet89 · 04/07/2020 09:00

Dental dental dental dental dental dental.

Every time.

Agony.

TorchesTorches · 04/07/2020 09:04

Frozen shoulder being 'nudged'. That happened a few times and was awful and on a par for a few seconds with childbirth (but childbirth lasts longer than a few seconds!) As contractions are there to "help" and thinking of them that way really helped me.

If you ask for an epidural when you are 4cm dilated, you can largely bypass the pain. I did that with DC1. With DC2 I didn't have that option, so pain relief was 2 paracetamol...got to experience the full shebang.

SinkGirl · 04/07/2020 09:07

I don’t know because I never had a contraction (emergency section) but have experienced a lot of very painful things in my life.
Near amputation of my arm
Severe gallbladder infection with pancreatitis (and accompanying tests like blood gases)
Endometriosis and a ruptured ovarian cyst
Several dental infections
The very disastrous spinal for my c section

But I’m still here! All deeply unpleasant and horribly painful but you can get through it and unlike most of those things you know the cause and that there’ll be a positive EBF to it.

SinkGirl · 04/07/2020 09:08

Or rather a positive end... stupid phone

ComeBy · 04/07/2020 09:20

Toothache from abscesses was way worse!

OP, I felt intense discomfort during contractions but I could tell it was my body doing what it should. It actually is labour. So I focussed on letting my body get in with it, staying upright, moving around, breathing, going ‘uuuuurrrgh’ on the outbreath, relaxing my shoulders and jaw. I didn’t want gas and air because I thought it would interfere with my self contained focus and breathing. I knew that once the job was done, the discomfort would end.

Then, after 24 hours we needed ventouse assistance (back to back presentation) and as I couldn’t cope with the more ‘helpless’ pain of lying on my back I had an epidural which acted very quickly.

Which was fine.

So: if you are doing OK, great. If you need or want pain relief, ask for it.

Picture a massive stadium, ram packed: every person a result of a woman successfully giving birth. Smile

Congratulations and good luck!

RhodaDendron · 04/07/2020 10:00

Slipped disc. The worst! No ebbing and flowing like labour and no end in sight. Got some amazing drugs for it though and was high as a kite.

ElsieMc · 04/07/2020 10:08

Not pain as such op, but I had terrible morning sickness with my two. First one, it lasted all day and was so debilitating I lost loads of weight and had to think about how a house smelt before I could visit as I would vomit there. It last beyond five months as well.

I would give birth any day over prolonged morning sickness. With me it was intense pain with my second which lasted from about 12.30 to 1.40 when I gave birth. Just had gas and air. I couldn't even speak. But what is that in the scheme of things really. Just my view op. Yes, its going to hurt but probably not as much as you think.

jackdaw141 · 04/07/2020 10:13

Torture. I would have been happy to die, in fact I wanted it.

Loubylou79 · 04/07/2020 10:16

I’m a wimp with pain but managed childbirth just fine 3 times. Just keep thinking it’s a positive pain. Tooth issues were far more painful in my experience

ToriaPumpkin · 04/07/2020 10:24

Toothache and the day I moved the wrong way and put my back out.

Ive given birth twice, both very fast and intense inductions and I'd do it a hundred times over if I never had to lift myself off the floor again with help because my back won't support me.

amiw · 04/07/2020 10:33

Kidney infection. Unrelenting. Flu. Both lasted more than a week though.

NorthernBirdAtHeart · 04/07/2020 10:50

Slipped 3 discs, instant hot firey agony, went on for 18 months until I had the first surgery. Had relief (other than pain from actual operation) for 5 days, then the fuckers all prolapsed again, now that pain, I wouldn’t wish on anyone. I’d far rather give birth on a daily basis, and I say that after 2 very long, painful natural births.
