That is worse than childbirth?

Just trying to ease my anxieties over giving birth, due this week!

I hate the unknown and not having a client what level of pain to expect. I know every labour is different but I cant sleep and thought I'd ask!

Severe sciatica. Relentless severe stabbing pain in buttock leg and foot which can last weeks.

Don't get me wrong childbirth was incredibly painful (until the epidural went in) but as other said it had a purpose, you can get decent pain relief and it is time-limted.

Best wishes OP

To be honest I was excited about the baby arriving and found it quite copable with both times but I had straightforward labours and births. I think there is quite a lot of variation between individuals but it definitely wasn't as bad I was expecting. Things that were worse - having stitches removed after an operation when they had been left too long and healed over, dry socket after dental extraction. I was surprised at how horrible sciatica is. Try not to worry, you may be one of the fortunate ones and worrying is only spoiling the waiting.

Toe nail removal

PomBearWithoutHerOFRS · 03/07/2020 20:48

Having my eyebrow pierced! It took a year to be fully healed too.
And piles! Oh Dear Lord the pain of prolapsed, thrombosed piles. I have never felt pain like it.
Giving birth was different every time, and honestly, not as bad as everyone makes out. I think people just like to scare pregnant women with scare stories a lot of the time. And it is very true that the instant it's over you start to forget. The pain stops as soon as the body "does the slithery thing" and someone says "it's a boy" or "it's a girl". It just stops.

ButterflyWitch · 03/07/2020 20:50

Gallstones and kidney stones felt similarly painful

50shadesoflunacy · 03/07/2020 20:51

Another one chiming in with Pulpitis. If've you'd given me a sledgehammer I would have knocked myself out with it. I actually said to the dentist that I would rather go through childbirth again drug free than go through that.

Stannisbaratheonsboxofmatches · 03/07/2020 20:51

I had a terrible flu, possible swine flu, that cake with appalling stomach pains. That was similar and probably worse as it went on for much longer.

Siennabear · 03/07/2020 20:54

No. And my second started as a back to back labour. I thought oh it will be fine, it can’t be that bad... but yes it is hard.

But, it’s a special time, you’ll get through it and you’ll have wonderful memories when you look back, and of course you’ll have your baby!

MeridianB · 03/07/2020 20:57

Tonsillitis. Doctor wanted to admit me. Gave me enough opioids to sink a battleship.

I’d give birth 5 times over to avoid it again

KateF · 03/07/2020 21:00

The headache I had with meningitis was worse than any of my three labours!

Lucygucy · 03/07/2020 21:03

Ripping my toenail off. It still makes me a bit queasy now.
Childbirth is painful but it is all means to an end. It's not unbearable though.

Evelefteden · 03/07/2020 21:04

My middle dd who was 10lb and back to back was really fucking bad. I was traumatised after it.

First one was straightforward with gas and air

Third was a planned C-section so fine.

RuthW · 03/07/2020 21:05

Yes, the pain of a very very badly sprained ankle.

bluechameleon · 03/07/2020 21:07

I had an operation to drain an abscess and had to have the wound packed every day for 2 weeks then every other day for another couple of weeks. It was very very very sore - it felt like being repeatedly stabbed, and it lasted for about half an hour. Horrible.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 03/07/2020 21:10

Nerve pain caused by a nerve root injury.

Labour hurt but I found it much easier to mentally cope with. It's a productive pain unlike an unrelenting pain of an injury.

It's so subjective though.

Butteredtoast55 · 03/07/2020 21:10

Agree about dental pain - at least labour comes and goes and you get something wonderful at the end of it! Also gall stones....excrutiating!
Honestly, CQSP, none of us can advise you because every woman experiences labour differently but I don't know a single mother who hasn't ultimately felt that it was absolutely worth it!

SlipperyLizard · 03/07/2020 21:16

I thought I’d be ok in labour cos I’d barely flinched when getting a tattoo. My god I was wrong, I have never felt anything like it.

But from watching one born every minute, I think that every woman experiences it differently, so my experience won’t be yours.

I still went back & did it again, so clearly thought it was worth it.

Bugslydoo · 03/07/2020 21:16

When my upper wisdom teeth were coming through. I was literally screaming in agony and rubbing crushed up cocodamol Tablets on the area. Had them out under GA in hospital and apparently the roots were corkscrewed and were pressing on a nerve whenever I opened my jaw. Bloody awful!

DeepSleepBathSoak · 03/07/2020 21:16

No. I have had migraines that come close though.

Sparklybanana · 03/07/2020 21:19

Every contraction is one that is done forever. I've had 3 kids and it does hurt like nothing else but it doesn't last forever and wasn't bad enough to put me off having 2 more kids. The one thing that is useful to know when you haven't done it is: If you can talk then it's going to get worse. If you can't talk but you can swear, then it's going to get worse. If you can't talk and are willing to do anything to negotiate yourself out of being in labour then you've made it! Birth is just around the corner! The change in pain is almost a relief until you get to the ring of fire but by that point I really couldn't give two fucks until the word 'stitches' are mentioned. Then I do become a massive wuss. Number 2 birth was great because i had no stitches. Placenta birth you get some contractions but it's surprisingly satisfying.
It's a different pain but I've been completely immobile with PGP and sobbed my way up the stairs - that was worse because no cute baby. Cute babies make it bearable

sanityisamyth · 03/07/2020 21:20

Dislocating my knees on a regular basis. I had an 80 hour labour and I would still take that over my kneecaps migrating half way around my leg.

LuluJakey1 · 03/07/2020 21:23

Acute pancreatitis - 9 days in hospital in total agony unable to get from one mega morphine dose to the next without sobbing in agony. It was relentless- caused by a gallstone that got stuck in a tube to the pancreas. Childbirth was a doddle after that.

tenredthings · 03/07/2020 21:23

Migraines and a broken hip, both were more painful than natural childbirth with zero painkillers, not even gas and air.

WokeEwok · 03/07/2020 21:24
