That is worse than childbirth?

Just trying to ease my anxieties over giving birth, due this week!

I hate the unknown and not having a client what level of pain to expect. I know every labour is different but I cant sleep and thought I'd ask!

Trigeminal neuralgia. They call it the suicide disease and for good reason. Pain relief has no effect as it's to do with nerve endings, you never know when you will have an attack - one time I was driving and had to grip the wheel and just get through it, it feels like a life sentence but luckily my GP prescribed a course of epilepsy meds that seemed to work.

Childbirth can be agony but there is a sense of calm to be reached because you know something wonderful is about to happen to you, if you can hold on to that thought it will help. It's almost like a test to force you not to focus on yourself and what you are feeling and just think about your baby - a harsh introduction to motherhood if you like.

I do know women who say for them, childbirth wasn't a big deal. The rest of us endure it and recover, there is a reason why the world is not full of one child families. You can do this, we are warriors.

No, but it's amazing how you instantly forget the pain straight afterwards!

Some forget it instantly.
Some are traumatised for years because of it.

NoRoomInBed · 01/06/2020 11:22

For me it was kidney stones. Mine were really bad it completely blocked my tubes and my kidneys started to shut down. Pain meds didnt do much I was on gas and air and morphine. Ended up have to have an operation and get a stent put in then go back to get them lasered. One was the size of a sugar cube 😯 and another in the flesh of my kidney. Would rather have loads of babies.

JustSew · 01/06/2020 11:23

I had my nose cauterised. It was the most painful experience ever. Many times worse than childbirth.
The thing with childbirth is that the pain isn't continuous you get a break in between contractions, no other pain has that benefit.

AragonsGirl · 01/06/2020 11:26

Ear infection...and I have an unplanned homebirth with no pain relief to compare it to!

Muzzyarker · 01/06/2020 11:27

Have had 7 children, 4 no pain relief. Tonsillitis and toothache were far worse.

JillGoodacre · 01/06/2020 11:29

Dislocated elbow after falling in the shower.. I didnt cry during childbirth and only had gas and air. The pain from this was indescribable

Redannie118 · 01/06/2020 11:31

Cluster headaches, sciatica and trying to pass an impacted poo- all much worse than childbirth and I had a 25 hour labour !

monkeyonthetable · 01/06/2020 11:34

Gallstones. Like trying to give birth through your ribcage.

Hamm87 · 01/06/2020 12:08

Gallstones had my gallbladder out when ds was 10 weeks hands down the worst pain in my life

HighOnStilts · 01/06/2020 12:23

Childbirth is painful, but you once you start going into active labour you know it's gotta happen one way or another and your body just sort of takes over. I had a waterbirth on no pain relief whatsoever, it was intense but I'd go through it again in a heartbeat so it can't be that bad!

IAmAClone · 01/06/2020 12:30

Complex regional pain syndrome in my right hand, TWICE, both times after surgeries. It does improve over time with a lot of physio

Porcupineinwaiting · 01/06/2020 12:32

Dislocated / broken toe. The agony was indescribable. Childbirth was painful but there was help and drugs at hand and you get a baby.

iklboo · 01/06/2020 12:34

I've torn a sacroiliac ligament. Much worse than childbirth. There is literally no comfortable position 24/7.

MingeofDeath · 01/06/2020 12:34

Toothache and earache are far, far worse than childbirth for me.

user1471582494 · 01/06/2020 12:35

Appendicitis was worse than child birth. At least I never have to go through either ever again.

Meltedwellie · 01/06/2020 12:42

Nope. Nothing has even come close to childbirth. It was agony for me and I couldn’t do the whole “breathe through it “ thing cos the pain was so bad my whole body tensed up. Epidurals are a wonderful thing tho so don’t worry.

Lancrelady80 · 01/06/2020 12:43

Another vote for gallstones here. Childbirth with 3rd degree tear and shoulder dystocia (fortunately resolved by positioning alone) was a breeze in comparison. Mind you, baby 2 was a doddle compared to baby 1...baby 1 left me in pain and walking awkwardly for months until cranial osteopathy worked its magic. Baby 2 I was back to normal within 24 hours, it was like a miracle in comparison to my first labour!

But gallstones and gallstone related pancreatitis...seriously the worst pain ever. Only time I've ever had morphine, and all that did was take the edge off it :-(

Igenixx · 01/06/2020 12:46

Sinusitis for 5 days, to the point where I lay on the floor feeling sick and wanting to tear my face off while dc 1 and 3 watched cbeebies all day.

This reminds me of a time I was ill with terrible flu (the real flu), I had a soaring temperature and a raging headache, every muscle ached. The headache was so bad I couldn’t open my eyes. Ds1 &ds2 who were toddlers at the time, happily picked up their toy spade and plastic Lego bucket and whacked me repeatedly over the head while screeching excitedly . They thought me shaking on the sofa and not opening my eyes was some sort of game.

Suzie6789 · 01/06/2020 12:48

Slipped disc with a large nerve root compression.
I was screaming and didn’t actually realise it was me that was screaming in pain. Childbirth was tolerable compared with that and it didn’t make me scream.

jellybaby1 · 01/06/2020 12:48

Definitely tooth ache( more specifically infection!!!) K would rather give birth another 5 times than have a tooth infection again x

Holothane · 01/06/2020 12:48

Pressure of eye at 60, now that is agony and considered an emergency at Moorfields, yes I had it about 18 years ago and have never forgotten the pain, a 100 years ago people would kill them self’s due to the pain, I was told that as well, I can see why as well,

mamaoffourdc · 01/06/2020 12:51

Toothache and having tonsils removed as an adult!

sleepyhead · 01/06/2020 12:56

Kidney stone. Was in the ball park but much worse because it wasn't part of a process (you'll not have a lovely baby at the end of it, you'll have a horrid bit of pointy gravel).

Toothache for the same reason - relentless, ongoing, no end in sight, no lovely, snuggly baby as a reward.

Siablue · 01/06/2020 12:57

Have you ever dislocated anything. I have hypermobility syndrome and I had SPD in pregnancy. I also fell over and dislocated my knees a week before giving birth.

I was in so much pain during pregnancy that I couldn’t tell when my labour pains began. I had my baby in the toilet in triage because the midwife thought I was too calm to be in labour. I do think it depends on what your experience is of pain.

Pain relief is also available during birth. I came off all my pain medication to get pregnant I only realised at my 35 week appointment that I didn’t need to do that.
