Is there systemic racism in US police?

'I don't think there's systemic racism' in US police forces says Trump’s security adviser.

How blind can you be?

Another black man is dead, not the first one to die at the hands of police and the Trump squad still claim that you get good guys and bad guys in the police, that not all police are racist, that they have non-white policemen so that makes them not racist.

Bingo!

There are about 800,000 law enforcement officers in the USA.

There will be some racist some not racist and every point on the spectrum in between, just like in the general population.

Being in law enforcement does mean you are held to a higher standard (as it should) but it doesnt mean any prejudices you acquired during your upbringing are automatically erased the day you get a job

NearlyGranny · 31/05/2020 19:03

Does the Pope have a balcony? 🤷🏼‍♀️

DioneTheDiabolist · 31/05/2020 19:03

Yes OP there is.Sad

Starbuggy · 31/05/2020 19:06

It’s not about individual officers though. Nobody is saying every single police officer is personally racist.

What the op and the protesters are pointing out is the widespread systemic racism which has led to the unfair treatment and sadly death of numerous black people, especially black men.

GreytExpectations · 31/05/2020 19:09

Yes OP, sadly there is. And it's not just in the US police force, insituational and systemic rascism is an issue everywhere.

BlackKite · 31/05/2020 19:13

Is the North Pole cold in winter?

bumblingbovine49 · 31/05/2020 19:20

Of course there is institutional racism in the US police force ( and in most institutions there). That doesn't mean every single officer is openly racist but that every one of them has to work within a system that is geared up to be racist.

There almost certainly is in the UK police forces as well,.though as we don't have armed police on the street it is probably less obvious and doesn't result in as many deaths , but it is pretty bad here as well.

PicsInRed · 31/05/2020 19:24

A racist system will foster, harbour, and shield racist officers - and racist officers will commit racist atrocities.

Greyblueeyes · 31/05/2020 19:27

Yes, there is. It's glaringly obvious to anyone with eyes in the US.

Jangirl2018 · 31/05/2020 19:31

@SeaToSki

The question was in regards to systemic racism, not individuals so where they fall on the spectrum of racist to not racist is irrelevant. Systemic racism refers to the way racism operates overall, not just one on one interactions. The system is of course racist, and so are an overwhelming amount of the people in positions of power within it. Plain for everyone to see.

MonsteraCheeseplant · 31/05/2020 19:31

Do bears shit in woods?

That was what I thought when I saw your thread title. Trump says what he wants people to believe and most of the time it has no bearing on reality.

Comefromaway · 31/05/2020 19:36

I can’t believe the US went from Obama to Trump.

I wouldn’t go there if you paid me (& I’d love to see a Broadway show). The whole place is systemically racist and I can see the UK going the same way if we are not careful.

If I see a black guy walking round an affluent neighbourhood in the UK I automatically think he must be something like a Dr or lawyer or university professor. If a white US woman sees a black guy walking round an affluent neighbourhood I’d bet my life the majority would think potential burglar or drug dealer.

treenu · 31/05/2020 19:37

If there are only 10 bad cops in 1000, it might as well be 1000/1000 if no one is prepared to challenge it.

Ghostlyglow · 31/05/2020 19:39

Yes

Of course there is

screamer1 · 31/05/2020 20:23

Yes. And in the UK too. We need to tear down the systems that are in place and build it all back up again. I don't know how change is going to come quickly enough.

"By filing a third degree murder against the killer of George Floyd, that a judge is likely to dismiss, the county prosecutor in Minnesota is setting the stage for a miscarriage of justice. Here's why:"

If that cop had killed a dog by kneeling on its neck for 9 minutes he would have been arrested straight away.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 31/05/2020 20:37

It’s not the racist cope that means there is institutional racism, it’s the treatment of this cop that highlights the institutional racism. He won’t get charged and if he does he will be found not guilty on some bullshit flimsy reason.

user1471565182 · 31/05/2020 20:37

Does the shit pope in the woods

Boulshired · 31/05/2020 20:45

There is but I do think that the police are a small part of a bigger picture. George had probably suffered systemic racism all his life including education.

AKissAndASmile · 31/05/2020 20:56

Absolutely @OnlyFoolsnMothers
Like I just linked to in my post above yours.
