Is there systemic racism in US police?

'I don't think there's systemic racism' in US police forces says Trump’s security adviser.

How blind can you be?

Another black man is dead, not the first one to die at the hands of police and the Trump squad still claim that you get good guys and bad guys in the police, that not all police are racist, that they have non-white policemen so that makes them not racist.

Bingo!

But yes, these great and glorious homes were built at a cost to others. Millions perished due to famines caused at least in part by the policies of the British East India Company and the British Empire in India alone. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_major_famines_in_India_during_British_rule

@JacobReesMogadishu
Your username is very telling. Jumping in to defend the state, are you? Next you'll be saying the cop is innocent until proven guilty. Qwhite interesting.

JacobReesMogadishu · 01/06/2020 21:40

My user name is actually an anti JRM dig.

I’m not jumping to defend the police officer at all and I think you’ve misunderstood what I’m saying.

JacobReesMogadishu · 01/06/2020 21:42

I’m just trying to make the factual point that rightly or wrongly a private autopsy will not necessarily be given any weight. That’s not my opinion it’s a fact from previous cases. I’m not defending the state.

RockLock · 01/06/2020 21:42

The third degree murder should now become first degree murder (which it should have been in the first place)

Someone in the state (the governor?) said it was early days and that more charges could be added. Will be interesting to see if the other police present end up getting charged with anything. I don’t see how they can deny knowledge of the situation when bystanders were loudly calling out that Floyd was dying.
Witchcraftandhokum · 01/06/2020 21:47

One third of Americans killed by a stranger are killed by police officers

Fucking terrifying.

But it’s not a ‘private’ autopsy it’s independent. George Floyd’s co-counsel has just said the District Attorney can actually rely on this autopsy to increase the charges already given to the murdering police officer.

mbosnz · 01/06/2020 21:47

The private autopsy would be opposing expert witness testimony, surely?

I hope so. I read the family had paid for this autopsy. Is that not right? It would be good if they could get a third autopsy done. One that’s not connected to the state, not paid for by the family.
JacobReesMogadishu · 01/06/2020 21:51

Ok the BBC say the new autopsy was paid for by the family. All I’m saying is because he was paid for by the family then the defence could fix on that to cast aspersions on the results of the autopsy. To prevent that excuse somehow a truly independent autopsy needs to be done.

Durgasarrow · 01/06/2020 22:01

And as far as systemic racism in US policing goes, it IS indeed systemic. The police tend to be very dug in and entrenched, with arcane rules and not enough constraints. They operate as if they have extremely dangerous jobs, which one could understand is possible in theory. However, in reality, the rate at which police die by violence in the United States is actually extremely low. In the entire U.S. in 2019, only 89 police officers were killed in the line of duty. About half of them were because of accidents, the others, felonies. Hdiedwww.fbi.gov/news/pressrel/press-releases/fbi-releases-2019-statistics-on-law-enforcement-officers-killed-in-the-line-of-duty

JacobReesMogadishu · 01/06/2020 22:08

Does anyone know what the ratio of black to white police officers in the USA is? Guess it will be higher the more diverse a place is......less numbers of black police in Nebraska, etc? But roughly? Maybe this could be something to work on....increasing the numbers of black police.

PotholeParadise · 01/06/2020 22:43

It is horrific that George's family have had to have a second autopsy done on him.

The idea of having to have a third in order to ensure justice is done is just grotesque. His poor, poor family.

AKissAndASmile · 01/06/2020 22:47

The independent autopsy was done by the top expert in the field Michael Baden. I just googled him and he actually did a second autopsy on Epstein!

Meanwhile in Amurica another unarmed black man was shot today. The cops had turned off their body cams so there's no evidence. Strange that.

AKissAndASmile · 01/06/2020 22:48

I need to donate to George's GoFundMe because they're going to need all the best lawyers money can buy. This is not going to be easy. FFS.

RockLock · 01/06/2020 23:06

I don’t know why turning your camera off is not a standard sackable offence. It reeks of foul play.

I wasjust thinking this too. A third autopsy is horrendous. America is a horrific place. A president that makes statements like looting starts/shooting starts and then goes hides in his bunker. Hmm

Apparently there is an app for people (black men) where you film the police interaction and it will automatically upload to a server Immediately so that the police cannot delete it or damage the phone. This is what life is like for a black person in USA

"Black Britons are now nine times more likely to be stopped and searched for drugs than white people, despite using illegal substances at a lower rate"...in Dorset Black Britons were 26 times as likely to be stopped...(and prosecuted)." --not just a US problem.

And according to this article, under a controversial new law (Section 60) black people are 40 times more likely to be searched than white ones! www.theguardian.com/law/2019/may/04/stop-and-search-new-row-racial-bias

JacobReesMogadishu · 02/06/2020 06:57

@Durgasarrow. Those stats tie in with the figures I found when I did my dissertation over 20 years ago. Those figures were known back then. The Mcphearson report came out at about the same time. Why is it allowed to,continue?

Durgasarrow · 02/06/2020 14:13

I have had reason to do research on this topic, and one of the reasons why black people get treated badly both in the UK and the US by police and the court system is exactly because of the systemic nature of racism. When I started my research, I really did not understand what systemic meant. For example, if you are black, you are more likely to live in a densely populated, poor neighborhood. This means that activities that a suburban teen could do in the privacy of his or her house or backyard without detection have to be done on the streets or in more exposed places by poorer kids who have less space. So although black kids smoke dope less than white kids, they are far more likely to be caught and charged for it. In some places, police have a quota of arrests they are supposed to make--so they are on the lookout for easy arrests. It's easier to find people who are out in the open. Black kids are also more likely to go to schools which have police officers present. They can use their power in heavy-handed ways, arresting children who are having normal kid disagreements and worse.
