Is there systemic racism in US police?

'I don't think there's systemic racism' in US police forces says Trump’s security adviser.

How blind can you be?

Another black man is dead, not the first one to die at the hands of police and the Trump squad still claim that you get good guys and bad guys in the police, that not all police are racist, that they have non-white policemen so that makes them not racist.

Bingo!

Scared poorly-trained officers are going to be quick to the gun.

I'm sorry but if a police office is scared of someone because of the colour of their skin they are a rascist and shouldn't be in that job. This is not an excuse for them shooting innocent people.

@Ursula2001
Why don't you just watch the video clips it's 9 mins long and you literally see white cop smirking as we witness George Floyd die. He remained on him for a further 3 minutes when it was clear he was either Dead or unconscious (he looked dead)
I'm a nurse and it was harrowing to watch but go on with yourself and blame the dead black man.

AKissAndASmile · 31/05/2020 22:27

There's no point talking about racism on Mumsnet because it is majority white people invested in maintaining the status quo and so complicit in it. That includes the site itself.

I would recommend the book Why I'm no longer talking to white people about race

AKissAndASmile · 31/05/2020 22:29

I would advocate ignoring the troll because they feed off this.

Guardian article: social media reports 50 incidents of violence and harrassment against journalists/media workers

www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/may/31/george-floyd-protests-reporters-targeted-by-police-and-crowds

Arresting, firing on, tear gassing journalists is NOT normal police behaviour in a democratic society.

And it's not just a few bad apples, it's happening up and down the country. Nor is it just being done to some poor long haired hippy from a student newspaper - it's happening to correspondents from CNN, MSBNC, CBS, even foreign correspondents from Sweden and Canada.

Ursula what on earth are you on about.

That cop murdered a man for nine minutes on film. That's the topic here.

I wholeheartedly agree with this reccomendation. I feel like a lot of mumsnetters need to read that book but knowing them, they will get offended by the title Hmm
GreytExpectations · 31/05/2020 22:33

@Ursula2001 you can't seriously be suggesting the police force isn't systemically rascist can you? It is and there are plenty of cases where innocent black people are murdered by white cops to prove it. Maybe you should do a bit of research and come back to us.

Temp123999 · 31/05/2020 22:38

@ursula2001
Probably wouldn't be straight onto the police if I was a black American.
Have you heard of Breaona Taylor?

I have no doubt that she has watched it.

Do you really think the police support his actions?

Errrr, yes. Seeing as they covered for him and stood guard while he beat George Floyd up in a police car...an event which is on video for all to see. Then they helped hold him down so he could murder him.

Temp123999 · 31/05/2020 22:48

@ursula2001
Mumsnet has a history of posters spouting racist shite then when called out say I'm black mixed race etc.
I'm black and live in a four bedroom house in North London my kids go to private school but if my teenage son was in a car with my cousins children in the US I'd fear for his life and no they are not in gangs or thugs on the ever so slight chance you are black you're full of self hate and I recommend you see a (preferably black) psychologist.
I'm not being flippant but if youl have children they will be seriously messed up

Please don't let a potentially interesting discussion be derailed by someone who is highly unlikely to be who they say they are.

Temp123999 · 31/05/2020 22:51

@ursula
I'm black born with parents from St Lucia I strongly suspect you are white.

amusedtodeath1 · 31/05/2020 22:54

Okay, this is interesting, as a white woman how should I be supporting black people's fight against racism, how do I help?

Should I just stay out of it? As simple as it sounds, I just want everyone to be treated with dignity and respect, to have the same opportunities, true equality for everyone. I see no difference between skin colours, we are all people.

But a PP said black people don't want white middle class people fighting their corner. So what can we do to help?

AgeLikeWine · 31/05/2020 22:54

The US’s origins as a society and economy literally built on the enslavement of human beings means it is a structurally racist society, and that is reflected in their police. It would be odd if it were not.
