Is there systemic racism in US police?

'I don't think there's systemic racism' in US police forces says Trump’s security adviser.

How blind can you be?

Another black man is dead, not the first one to die at the hands of police and the Trump squad still claim that you get good guys and bad guys in the police, that not all police are racist, that they have non-white policemen so that makes them not racist.

Bingo!

Once young people are in the system, they get treated worsewhile white children might be treated with great empathy for their child (in a suburb, a white child might have played sports with/been friends with the children of higher level professionals in the justice system, law enforcement, education, etc., who could pull strings to help a child who had broken the law.) Having money and connections also helps white children get all kinds of other advantagesadvice, tutelage, lessons, ability to pick up class cues, and inside information about internships, educational opportunities, and jobs.

I was well into my adulthood when I realized that if I used my connections to help even the most adorable and most deserving of my white friend's children to get ahead, that I was systemically depriving adorable and deserving black young person from getting that opportunity. Not saying that a black young person WOULD get that opportunity. But if I put my thumb on the scale, he or she most definitely would not.

For an example of white privilege in action, I recommend The Durrells in Corfu. It's not white/black, but rather, colonialist privilege, but the behavior is the same. Oblivious English lady with dangerously horrible children swan off to Corfu where they are treated with great deference by the no doubt terrified locals despite behaving execrably, and the whole thing is shown as a comedic romp.

Yes of course, there definitely is systemic racism in the US police force. Completely disgraceful. Angry

My daughter is autistic. When having a meltdown she is mostly treated with compassion and consideration (by school/those in authority etc)

My son is autistic. His meltdowns were treated by school as a behavioural problem. We removed him from school before they expelled him. The police however were very sympathetic in one dealing with him.

Now imagine how a black, autistic boy might be treated by those in authority.

I've been arguing with someone on social media about their focus on the looting instead of the murder. I'm white, I don't know whether to keep going or whether I'm starting to speak for black people on issues I don't understand. I recognise as well that it is not the job of black people to educate me. However, I am getting a huge amount out of these threads and am grateful for those who are posting because I'm learning a huge amount.

Even that post I'm aware has white saviour complex written all over it.

@Durgasarrow

I’m just so glad the police here tend not to have guns.
