SpaceX vs George Floyd

focuspuller · 31/05/2020 18:47

AIBU to be baffled that so many of my acquaintances on social media are happy to share comments and reactions to the SpaceX/NASA flight but are not sharing similar reactions or comments about the murder of George Floyd?

*I'm not being complacent. I'm saying you can't draw such conclusions from what people post on Facebook, because you can't.
*
If you're not signing a free petition you are complacent. Yes there are other atrocities in the world, but with a case as highly publicised as this, I don't see any excuse not to other than you don't care enough to

TheFencePainter · 01/06/2020 09:28

It's not enough to care about something. You must tell other people on social media that you care so you get credit for caring.

Do you even care if you don't post about it? Do you even think if you don't post about it? Do we even exist if we don't post?
Are we real? Or are we not if we don't post😱

I didn't post about Manchester bombings too. Did I not care?😱 Nah. Unlike all thoughts and prayers I actually send money to the funds for families. Didn't post a single thing about pandemic. Did I not care? Nah. I send money to zoo, to a fund in a memory of someone which will go on helping etc.
I had a racist shouting BS my friend and I. Didn't post about. Did I not care? Nah. I told the racist what I think about his behaviour and than told him his haircut is shit, which seemed to actually hit the nerveConfused.
I had a xenophobe telling me to fuck off back to Poland (not even from Poland🙄). Did I post about it? Nah. I told him to fuck off back to whatever BNP shithole he crowled from.

Some of us leave our SM for cats, bees (#savebees) and other nice things because it makes nice change to a real life where we actually do the things which need to be done🤷🏻

Anyway. Thoughts and prayers 🙏 OP and few others. Hope they help to the fight!

TheFencePainter · 01/06/2020 09:29

you don't have to put anything on Facebook but you can still support in other ways
that's what we've been saying 🤷🏻 But apparently not posting is bad. That's what the discussion is about

[quote focuspuller]A little over 12 hours later and the poll has steadily run at 86% YABU 14% YANBU

I’ve going to post on Facebook about people who use logical fallacies and statistical distortion to support their weak arguments.

Why don’t you just outright say what you’re implying OP?

I wasn't talking about signing a petition Confused

Quartz2208 · 01/06/2020 09:51

@focuspuller so Mumsnet is a purely England and Wales website is it?

The truth is all of these ways of "helping" are purely designed to make us feel better and believe that we are doing something and all the OP wanted was to feel that her choices of friends were right and they agree with her

FrodoTheDodo · 01/06/2020 09:51

There was a whataboutery thread last week with the OP complaining the public and the media seemed to care more about George Ffloyd than the women murdered by domestic violence. She was absolutely panned and it was deleted.

ChilliCheese123 · 01/06/2020 09:58

Literally just seen a post on my Facebook about this... trans woman I know who usually posts 10-15 things a DAY about trans rights etc. fine. If I wanted to I’d delete her but I find some of it interesting and informative etc. she’s now moved on to slagging off anyone who isn’t posting constantly about George Floyd, apparently ‘if white people aren’t out there right now using themselves as human shields against the police, they aren’t doing enough’ - so millions of people have to now descend on a city center near them and prostrate themselves? If we don’t do that, we are racist? Someone politely pointed out that they’ve been reading this and that book and have donated money to a fund in the US that will hopefully make a difference. The reply was ‘your inaction says everything’. I actually think this person (who is white) is almost fetishizing POC at this point. Posting things about only surrounding themselves with POC because she can’t be around white privilege anymore etc

If someone cleverer than me could write some sort of response for me to use when I inevitably get messaged by someone asking why I’m not clicking attending on this weekends protest or not posting long rants about this issue on my social media that would be fucking fantastic. So many people on this thread have basically summed up how I feel about the virtue signaling screeching on SM that I can’t put into words.

NameChangedToProtect1 · 01/06/2020 10:04

None of this electronic curtain twitching makes me want to join in social media!
Yes it looks as though the police officer was in the wrong and it's right that his actions will be examined in a court of law. Yes it raises questions of society, particularly in the US. The death, injury and loss of individuals as a result of the rioting is equally wrong and in terms of the vast number of people impacted probably worse. Leave it to the courts and save the internet for your daily "what I had for breakfast" drivel, lessmprople will get hurt.

araiwa · 01/06/2020 10:06

I shared a link to the spacex launch

Im not sharing a video of someone being killed

I LOVE the term electronic curtain twitching

focuspuller · 01/06/2020 11:22

I get that it’s tiring for you. I do. I feel your guilt. It shows in the anger here. The regular 6th form boys have crawled out with their silly derailments (we know you - you are on too many threads with the same shit and I’ve been here many years 🤣) I saw something, I wondered why, I asked on an anonymous forum and I’ve had many answers.

Overall, the answers have supported a theory that white people don’t care much or are afraid to post because they don’t wish to offend black people, or that people feel that race is “political” and they don’t wish to mix their SM with political statements.

Thank you for your help and for your wisdom those who contributed constructively.

Godspeed George.

TheFencePainter · 01/06/2020 11:34

I get it now! You don't care. You are just a little goady fucker trying to get people to fight by intentionally (because no one can have such bad reading comprehension) misrepresenting facts and what posters say. Nice try

ChilliCheese123 · 01/06/2020 11:42

I see OP, you’re one of those ‘if it’s not on social media it doesn’t exist’ people.

FrodoTheDodo · 01/06/2020 11:43

Oh i'm cringing for you OP.

ItsGoingTibiaK · 01/06/2020 12:10

Oh, the OP is on to the patronising deliberate misinterpretation of what posters have said but now because the thread didn’t go as they hoped. Textbook.

Quite simply, @focuspuller, as with a good proportion of AIBU threads, just because someone else isn’t behaving in the same way as you, it doesn’t mean they’re wrong.

Trying to imply that there is a meaningful correlation between how people have voted on here and racial demographics, or that how people choose to use social media is in any way an indicator of how much they care about racism is a deeply flawed approach, not least because you seem to have assumed that everyone who has disagreed with you must be white - which is pretty fucking ironic from an OP decrying racism, don’t you think?

Quartz2208 · 01/06/2020 12:21

@focuspuller how old are you? Maybe SM has different connotations with us to managed to get our points across for years without using social media. But then you have been here for years.

People use SM in different ways why cant you get that?

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 01/06/2020 12:40

I've not posted anything on Facebook, mainly because I only ever use it for personal things. My family and friends also know my thoughts on racism - I've walked away from a 'family fortune' because the money came from slavery. Me posting on my Facebook won't do anything.

I have posted on Twitter and got a bit of abuse saying that as a white person I couldn't possibly understand. That is true, however I'm not quite sure what I'm meant to do. If I don't post anything I'm in the wrong and if I do I get told I don't understand, am privileged and it's nothing to do with me.

KingOfDogShite · 01/06/2020 14:11

I’d love to know how you can tell which of us is black, white or asian by reading a few words we’ve written.

That’s some superpower!

MrBennsshop · 01/06/2020 14:19

@focuspuller

So awkwardness and fear of offending as a best option and only posting happy things or entertainment and not wanting to look 'woke' as a worst option.

Thanks all. There's a long way to go before white people see kneeling on a black guy's neck until he is dead as reaction-worthy as a space rocket.

I haven't commented on SM about George Floyd., but I have about SpaceX. Bugger all to do with being reaction worthy. SM is light entertainment for me. I react to what actually matters in other ways, for example marching, writing to my MP, getting involved in anti racism education programmes and events.

Is your view of others based on the - mostly fictitious - online world? How strange.

Rubyupbeat · 01/06/2020 16:08

My social media is mainly George Floyd.
