To be confused as to why nobody else's teeth cringe?

A bit of a lighthearted post, I didn't really know where to put this but for as long as I've known certain textures have made me feel phenomenally uncomfortable and I can only describe as my teeth cringing. These include, toilet paper, wet cardboard, the stuff in nappies and sanitary towels cotton wool. I've talked about this to my partner, parents and a few friends and none have an idea what I'm on about. Someone please tell me they know what I'm on about before because I can't be the only person? Grin

Velvet or velour.

If my sleeves get wet when I've washed my hands and it touches my arms. I can handle wet laundry absolutely fine 🤷🏼‍♀️

Wet shoe laces.

Urgh.

mylittlesandwich · 30/05/2020 21:18

This sounds like an innuendo but it isn't. I can't stand having wood in my mouth, so lolly sticks or wooden cutlery which is sadly on the rise to reduce plastic. I also hate that kind of polyester material that a lot of cheapie kid things are made of like wallets and bags. I dread DS being old enough for them.

Tlollj · 30/05/2020 21:20

Polystyrene and custard powder.

YeahWhatevver · 30/05/2020 21:25

Anything that "squeaks" not like a squeaky door but some fabrics and especially cotton wool when it's rubbed together firmly.

Gives me a wave of skin tingling that starts in my mid torso and rises up to my scalp, kind of like a goosebumps feeling but in a very definitely rising wave. Culminates in the hair on my scalp "tensing" like my scalp is getting goosebumps too.

KilljoysDutch · 30/05/2020 21:28

Brillo pads do it to me just thinking about them. Eurgh.

OtterBe4 · 30/05/2020 21:29

Not my teeth but my hands curl at the thought of touching tuille & velvet, sand under my nails.

Fiveletters · 30/05/2020 21:29

Polystyrene rubbing against itself!

Tin foil cases - urgh!!

alotinashortspaceoftime · 30/05/2020 21:29

@mylittlesandwich same with wood, the coffee stirrers they give out make me feel so uncomfortable

Wet shoelaces have that effect on me, ever since I was a kid I couldn’t bare touching them, makes me cringe just thinking about it.

YeahWhatevver · 30/05/2020 21:32

Oh god wet shoelaces 100%

Making my brain fizzy just thinking about it.

JorisBonson · 30/05/2020 21:34

Velvet. The thought of it makes my palms go sweaty.

I once accidentally touched a velvet dress in a shop whilst hungover and retched so loudly that people stopped to stare.

LaPufalina · 30/05/2020 21:34

I'm like this too. Butter on well done toast scraping, argh.
I've got a similar thing, not sure if it's linked, if I bite into something too soft it makes my top front teeth tingle so much that I have to clutch them with my fingers to calm the nerves down Blush

JorisBonson · 30/05/2020 21:34

@Elsiebear90 wet shoelaces just gave me bad shivers

ElectricTonight · 30/05/2020 21:35

I get that if I scratch my nail on the paint under the car door handle on the outside! arghhh 😫

Plump82 · 30/05/2020 21:35

I'm the same but I also get sore knees!

For me, the worse thing is when you go to write on a piece of paper and are using a pen that you need to click to get the nib down but either forget or it doesn't click. That feeling of the pen without the nib on the paper! 😜

OtterBe4 · 30/05/2020 21:37

@Plump
The pen thing 😭😭

CaptainHammer · 30/05/2020 21:37

I understand you OP! It’s a horrible feeling. The thought of sucking a wet flannel brings it out the worst for me ergh

ElectricTonight · 30/05/2020 21:38

Oh and watching someone rub their feet on a carpet (shudder) , or when I used to wind the baby I had to rub my hand on the skin on their back because the fabric made my hand "fuzzy".

BirdsInTheAttic · 30/05/2020 21:39

It’s dry things for me - the feeling of salty homemade play dough drying on my hands makes me go into some kind of panicked flap. Bleurgh

SilverOtter · 30/05/2020 21:39

Writing with pencils, the thought of chewing wool, sandy feet touching anything.....ugh! Shuddering!

Hannie123 · 30/05/2020 21:40

**Polystyrene being pulled out of cardboard boxes (I am dreading when we move houses).
**Wood (I can never finish an ice lolly for this reason).
Another weird one for me is short sleeve tops that reach my elbow. I hate the feeling. Also, denim jackets... I love them but cannot wear, especially with a t-shirt.

kshaw · 30/05/2020 21:45

Velvet or any fabrics with a nap. Or the sound of two fabrics rubbing together. Or sweeping a carpet.....defo make my teeth cringe!

Chiyo666 · 30/05/2020 21:46

I get it in the base of my back.

And when I’m scared my vagina tingles Grin

Anotherscentedcandle · 30/05/2020 21:47

Pulling the drawer out of the freezer does it for me, the sound of the plastic against the ice makes my teeth cringe.

All you wood haters should spare a thought for the poor woman in the hospital bed next to me who had part of her jaw replaced and had to relearn how to open her mouth by sliding wooden sticks between her teeth...

Ski37 · 30/05/2020 21:54

Metal on stoneware crockery does it for me- can’t eat off it or listen to anyone else scraping their knife and fork off it. Also the sound of metal on metal eg cutting something with a knife on a metal base.
When I was at school I used to have a brushed metal fountain pen and the feel of it between my teeth used to really set me on edge. It was also like a weird compulsion though and I would sometimes put my pen between my teeth despite the fact I hated it so much. The pen has long since gone and I will never have one again!
