Smoking in the supermarket queue

AIBU to think this is vile and selfish?

Was stood queueing to get into a supermarket with one oft he kids and the man directly in front of us was smoking. It was a particularly strong and manky smelling cigarette too. The breeze was blowing it directly in our faces. I'm not normally super precious about people smoking outside if they're away from others, but when it's being blown in my face and I can't move away without losing my place in the queue I find it objectionable.

I didn't say anything because my daughter cringes when I "cause a scene" but if this happens again when I'm alone WIBU to ask them to extinguish it? Furthermore, if they refuse, WIBU to knock it out of their hand with my walking stick thus maintaining safe social distancing?

YANBU, that is incredibly anti social. yuck :S

Yes, of course you would BU to assault someone Hmm

But it's fine to ask someone not to smoke in a queue; as you say, you can't really move away from them.

NotExactlyHappyToHelp · 29/05/2020 16:05

YANBU and I’m a smoker. Horrible to trap people unable to move away if they wish to.

hellsbellsmelons · 29/05/2020 16:07

I hate this.
I see it often and it's crazy.
Why do it?
You know non-smokers can't get away from it.

And..... I say this as a smoker!!!!!

BumpBundle · 29/05/2020 16:07

YANBU
Some smokers are so entitled - you'll get many of them here. Good on you for not causing a scene and thinking of your daughter but next time feel free to politely ask him to put it out.
He also may not have been aware it was blowing at you. Maybe just hold back far enough so it doesn't and if you're asked to move up and close the gap then explain to the supermarket worker that his smoke is blowing at you. He'll either overhear and put it out or you can stay further back and not be impacted by the smoke.

Madein1995 · 29/05/2020 16:07

Yep, yabu. No different to being on the street. And personally I think banning smoking under bus shelters is a bit daft too.

RyanStartedTheFire · 29/05/2020 16:09

Yep, yabu. No different to being on the street.
You can move away from the smoker in the street. You're stuck in the queue.

Welshmaenad · 29/05/2020 16:10

@Iwalkinmyclothing Hm. Might have to take DS and his nerf gun next time then. I reckon he could shoot it away without touching the fingers if it's freshly lit and still long enough.

I did once snatch a cigarette out of someone's hand and chuck it in a drain, but they were smoking underneath the NICU window where my very sick baby was, so I have no regrets. It's just difficult to do that these days when you can't get close enough.

Disclaimer - I used to smoke, I would never have done this. I wouldn't even vape in a queue because I know some people don't like it.

And yes, it's the not being able to get away that annoyed me. I can move away from someone smoking on a street. Bus shelters are the same as queues - if people need to stay dry or sit/lean, how are they supposed to escape someone's second hand smoke?

It would be equally 'reasonable' for you to vomit on his shoes.

I'm so glad I live in a place where smoking in public buildings is illegal.

Eh? So do we!! In the UK you can't smoke in public buildings!
What an odd comment.
OP is referring to queuing outside while queuing to get into the shop or supermarket!

borntohula · 29/05/2020 16:36

I smoke (mainly socially) and that really is pretty gross and inconsiderate.

Perisoire · 29/05/2020 16:40

Sense of honour bypass clearly.

YANBU, OP, I would have said something. There was a thread a few weeks ago where the OP was harangued for telling someone not to smoke in the queue.

LoseLooseLucy · 29/05/2020 16:42

Arm yourself with a little water pistol and extinguish it next time 🔫

GreyHare · 29/05/2020 16:45

I would rather a 'proper' fag than a vape, someone was doing a marvellous dragon impression with billowing clouds that smelt like a mixed fruit squash, it made me nauseous.

doublehalo · 29/05/2020 17:04

Just goes to illustrate how stupid the 2 metre rule is.

If you're breathing in their smoke, you're breathing in their virus.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 29/05/2020 17:06

Ask to swap places with him.

WorraLiberty · 29/05/2020 17:07

How is "Excuse me, could you move your cigarette please as the wind is blowing this way, thanks" 'causing a scene'??

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 29/05/2020 17:15

YANBU OP

I am a smoker but smoking in a queue is just grim and pretty selfish.

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 29/05/2020 17:17

@GreyHare Give vapers a break At least they are trying to stop the cigarettes !

PepperPott · 29/05/2020 17:17

I smoke. I was a non smoker for 10+ years until very recently and remember how disgusting it is for non-smokers.

YANBU

EmeraldShamrock · 29/05/2020 17:25

Yanbu. The supermarket should have signs in place, a man was puffing away today I was 3 behind him but there was an elderly person behind him.

Kenworthington · 29/05/2020 17:29

I’m a smoker but I wouldn’t do this. How unfair and selfish

Rosehip10 · 29/05/2020 17:29

Many smokers are entitled idiots.

GreyHare · 29/05/2020 17:31

@WhentheRabbitsWentWild I was a smoker for many years and gave up without resorting to sweet sickly smelling clouds of vapour, I do find them far more offensive than a normal cigarette.
