Smoking in the supermarket queue

AIBU to think this is vile and selfish?

Was stood queueing to get into a supermarket with one oft he kids and the man directly in front of us was smoking. It was a particularly strong and manky smelling cigarette too. The breeze was blowing it directly in our faces. I'm not normally super precious about people smoking outside if they're away from others, but when it's being blown in my face and I can't move away without losing my place in the queue I find it objectionable.

I didn't say anything because my daughter cringes when I "cause a scene" but if this happens again when I'm alone WIBU to ask them to extinguish it? Furthermore, if they refuse, WIBU to knock it out of their hand with my walking stick thus maintaining safe social distancing?

No @Rosehip10 that’s not fair. Some entitled idiots also happen to be smokers. It’s not linked.

tulippa · 29/05/2020 17:34

They have signs up at my local Tesco asking people not to smoke in the queue. Maybe you could ask your supermarket to do something similar?

Aprilbaby2020 · 29/05/2020 17:34

YANBU this is so inconsiderate and rude! Can’t believe some people

Azaziel · 29/05/2020 17:37

You can ask someone without causing a scene

GoGadgetGo · 29/05/2020 17:37

He is outside and queuing. He has every right to do so especially if he is waiting for over half hour in the queue and needs a smoke.
Is it nice for others? Probably not.
But during these times, it's not perfect.
I think if it bothered you too much, move a bit so it's not blowing in your face or leave the queue.
I'm not a smoker, but smoking is not against the law so you need to get over it and either put up with it or move,

NeutralJanet · 29/05/2020 17:42

YANBU to think its inconsiderate but I don't think that hitting people with your walking stick, squirting them with a water pistol or snatching it out of their hand and throwing it down a drain is a reasonable response either. One day you'll do that to the wrong person and end up with a punch in the face.

Jaxhog · 29/05/2020 17:51

If you're breathing in their smoke, you're breathing in their virus.

Exactly. Vaping also. Although it is also gross the rest of the time too.

whocanibe2day · 29/05/2020 17:59

Well if you're breathing in their vapour and their smoke, you're probably not 2 metres away.

Pleasenodont · 29/05/2020 18:23

YANBU, incredibly selfish. I always think this when people smoke around bus shelters too. Smoking is grim, it should be kept away from others as much as possible.

ClashCityRocker · 29/05/2020 18:28

Yeah, I smoke but wouldn't dream of smoking in a supermarket queue.

Sugartitss · 29/05/2020 18:28

My mum once took a cigarette out of a pregnant woman’s mouth years ago when I was a kid. Late eighties.

Magickl · 29/05/2020 18:32

A man in front of me in the supermarket queue was vaping and I'm not kidding when I say the plume of vapour (from his mouth and lungs) easily travelled ten feet.

Igotthemheavyboobs · 29/05/2020 18:40

Well if you're breathing in their vapour and their smoke, you're probably not 2 metres away

What? The smoke and giant clouds of vape mist will absolutely travel more than 2 meters! Yanbu op, it is incredibly selfish to smoke in the queue.

species5618 · 29/05/2020 18:49

GoGadgetGo
He doesn't need a smoke.
It may not be against the law, but it is anti-social smoking around others who don't smoke.

letmethinkaboutitfornow · 29/05/2020 18:55

YANBU

vodkaredbullgirl · 29/05/2020 18:57

deja vu

or is it ground hog day Smile

BooFuckingHoo2 · 29/05/2020 19:00

Ffs.

Why couldn’t you just have said “excuse me do you mind standing out of the queue while you smoke so it doesn’t blow in our faces?”

I’m sure it would have been very easily solved!

Why do we all have to do this terribly British thing of silently hating each other Confused

Neverender · 29/05/2020 19:01

Eh?! Someone was smoking the other day in the queue and it did me zero harm...

InFiveMins · 29/05/2020 19:03

I don't smoke but this isn't something I could get wound up about to be honest and your planned reaction would be completely over the topConfused

Somanysocks · 29/05/2020 19:05

You could have asked him to swap places so you were upwind of him, he might have put it out rather than go down a place in the queue. Smokers are grim and selfish.

theemmadilemma · 29/05/2020 19:06

I'm a smoker, a polite one generally, I would usually say within reason it's fine to smoke outside where it's permitted, but in the current climate in a queue you can't avoid it's really cunty.

Maria53 · 29/05/2020 19:26

Good for you @Neverender but some of us are asthmatic.

YANBU someone did in front of me recently and I had to endure it. Flared up my lungs right away.

Neverender · 29/05/2020 19:30

Omg what do you do in the summer? Or in a pub garden?

Herja · 29/05/2020 19:39

I smoke and still don't think YABU. You're being silly though, asking something isn't causing a scene, you should have just asked him to put it out.

No point thinking about it now, if it happens again, say something. In a normal (not passive aggressive, not grumpy, not rude) voice, you'll not cause a scene. If it's the type of person you think would kick off, then either leave yourself, or forget it. Fuck all else you could do and there's no point in standing seething - the only person having a shit day then is you.

PlantPottingPlantPotting · 29/05/2020 19:40

I had this today, YANBU. People are there with their children FFS
