Mumsnet etiquette

What do you think is important MN etiquette? Does it have one?

OP posts:
ShebaShimmyShake · 29/05/2020 10:58

The most important thing seems to be to attach moral values to things that have none, such as the size of a wedding, have a morbid horror of doing anything "common" even though nobody can agree on what that is, and to deride anyone for doing anything that is deemed to be "attention seeking".

NuffSaidSam · 29/05/2020 11:00

I think 'read which topic you're in' is an important one. You can be much more 'direct' in AIBU then bereavement, for example. Some topics are for discussion/debate/argument and others are much more for support.

'Stay on topic' is another one. If you have a question on an unrelated issue, start your own thread. Don't detail the current one.

Sparklfairy · 29/05/2020 11:04

The golden rule (in AIBU) is to use 100% correct grammar and spelling, plus of course proper sentences and paragraphs. Otherwise your replies will be littered with replies ignoring your question and instead pulling apart your command of written English.

Certain words are also banned. Hubby, bubs, little man, and any twee references to sex (I think my favourite was "bam bam")Wink
.

TanteRose · 29/05/2020 11:04

RTFT
OP shouldn't post then never come back
No reviving zombie threads
Use the correct topic for your post (not everything is AIBU)

DesignedForLife · 29/05/2020 11:06

If you name change to post an outing thread you must insist you’ve been here sin naice ham/scarf/dinosaurs roamed the earth

ilovesooty · 29/05/2020 11:07

Bam bam? I shall never look at yje Flintstones in the same way again... Grin

DomDoesWotHeWants · 29/05/2020 11:08

If you don't have time to read the thread, or at least the posts by the OP then don't comment. It makes you look daft if you say something already covered many, many times. Or if circumstances have moved on.

Elouera · 29/05/2020 11:11

People always describe their children or partner as 'my delightful DD, my gorgeous kids, my wonderful/amazing/thoughtful DH etc etc'. Its really unnecessary to the topic in question.

Smartcasual · 29/05/2020 11:14

Not bothering to respond to posters who have replied.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 29/05/2020 11:15

Anyone who does things differently to you must be wrong.

Spending as little as possible on a wedding is a competitive sport on MN.

Children only need a lump of coal for Christmas. Anything else is excessive!

You don’t have a MIL problem. You have a ‘D’H problem.

The assumption is that everyone has plenty of money and a partner or parent who can help out with childcare.

MsChatterbox · 29/05/2020 11:17

Don't start a thread where there's loads exactly the same!

And then there's the only use the mumsent emoji but I ignore this 😁

zscaler · 29/05/2020 11:19

If you have a baby shower or gender reveal, or indeed assume that any body other than you and your partner will show even an iota of interest in your new baby, you are entitled / grabby / a cf / blind to the reality that everyone in the world is indifferent at best and actively hostile in general to infants which are not their own.

rbe78 · 29/05/2020 11:19

"Be kind" - except to step mums!

HUCKMUCK · 29/05/2020 11:23

Make it clear in the thread title what the thread is about. I can't stand titles like, 'Am I really being unreasonable?' or 'So angry'.

I have a caveat that if it is in a very specific topic like teens or food or something, it's not so bad. But in general topics like Chat and AIBU, be bloody clear.

Also, no jumping to massive assumptions from a vague OP.

chrislilleyswig · 29/05/2020 11:24

Agree about checking to see if there is a thread already.

You can have a 500+ thread on something like a TV prog so there's no need to post separately asking if you're the only one watching.

Also some words are not Mn words, such as hubby and hun, lol and x

Hingeandbracket · 29/05/2020 11:37

Anyone who does things differently to you must be wrong.

And is a troll/unkind/a bot/russian

Hingeandbracket · 29/05/2020 11:38

You are NEVER allowed to say what the hobby is.

ALL hobbies are top secret.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 29/05/2020 11:39

@Hingeandbracket

You are NEVER allowed to say what the hobby is.

ALL hobbies are top secret.

And the assumption will be that the hobby is cycling.
Sparklingbrook · 29/05/2020 11:44

Don't take it too seriously.

Keep in mind not everything is at it seems, and people lie. Shock

Don't feel the need to post every brain fart you have about anything as a question in AIBU. If you do prepare for posters to be Hmm

Don't post on here then complain it's suddenly appearing in the Daily Mail.

ProsperTheBear · 29/05/2020 11:46

put D for dear in front of every name. Works well with Dex-bastard-husband, or Dneighbour-from-hell.

Use acronym for every person you are talking about. The more confusing the better.

bee222 · 29/05/2020 11:49

If you have a question on an unrelated issue, start your own thread. Don't detail the current one

I hate this. You see it a lot on the pregnancy forums. Someone will start a thread about concerns they are having a miscarriage. Someone will then turn up with “hi mummies! Just had a scan and baby is doing great but I feel sooooooo sick. Has anyone got any tips for morning sickness?”

It’s fucking rude and it always surprises me how people don’t understand how to use the internet.

See also, people responding to posts from 2008 with “hi op, what was the outcome of this?”

Tedgy · 29/05/2020 11:49

Take offence at the most mundane things

ProsperTheBear · 29/05/2020 11:49

Agree that anyone earning even a penny more than you is either a liar or a rich bastard that needs to be taxed at around 90%

Faint in horror at the idea of having guests overnight, or exchange favours with friends and family FOR FREE

Give a Biscuit, call them a troll, or tell them to fuck off when you don't agree with someone but you know they are right.

Viviennemary · 29/05/2020 11:50

Read the thread (I don't always) Blush
Don't let a thread run and run then report it because you don't like the answers
Don't call folk hun
Don't ever accuse anyone of being a troll even when they obviously are

ProsperTheBear · 29/05/2020 11:51

Be fuming/ outraged/ disgusted on the OP's behalf.

Find red flags everywhere.

Don't want to read and run, so write that down exactly.
