You tube influencer "rehomes" adopted son

Myka Stauffer a popular YouTube and Instagram influencer raised considerable funds to adopt a child from China, the child a boy she called Huxley had brain damage, non verbal autism and behavioural difficulties. Myka has 4 biological children and adopted 4 year Huxley 18 months ago.

After quite some time of not posting anything about him and after repeated questions from her "followers" she recently uploaded a video where in her words she's "rehomed him" and he was with people much more able and suited to deal with his complex needs.

The main issue people have is the money she raised for his adoption and the secrecy regarding this at one point one of her followers noticed that she had put a video up of her repainting his room and turning it into her daughters room with no mention of him.

Apparently it was like she wanted people to forgot she has ever adopted him and people are furious.

I can see both sides as it must have been a complex and difficult decision especially if they couldn't meet his needs. She had to consider her other children... one a small baby but on the other hand she wasn't very transparent about it...

Also there are allegations of her using duct tape on his hands and I have seen a video of her mocking him because of his meltdowns so hopefully he is now with people more suited to his needs.

Thoughts?

It seems true that there’s no such thing as bad press, it seems. I just peeked on her Insta and she gained thousands of followers since this afternoon. Weird world we live in.

sqirrelfriends · 28/05/2020 20:53

Jesus, I've never watched any of their videos but feel sick reading what people are saying on here.

It looks like that poor child was just a pawn to them. I hope his new family gives him all the love he deserves.

ZoeCM · 28/05/2020 21:30

From this article:

Later, in August 2018, she wrote again: “We are praying about adopting again. And my husband wants me to ask what special needs would you consider minor or relatively easy to manage that most people wouldn’t consider easy?”

im bored and went and re-found the video where huxleys thumb is duct taped and kova is literally sucking her thumb in the same video. shes 4 years older than huxley and not autistic

myka would constantly bark orders at huxley in english and get visibly frustrated when he didnt understand. she acted like it was bc he was stupid or uncooperative when it was clear he just didnt know english

Frankly, this does sound like a case where a clueless white Western couple adopted a Chinese child with SEN as A) a fashion accessory, B) proof of their compassion and selflessness, and C) a cash cow. I think you'd have to be pretty naive to dismiss this interpretation out of hand.

There's no mention in their "update on our family" video of having given Huxley the revenue from his videos for his future. The fact that they "re-homed" him a few months after their fourth biological child was born is not a good sign. They posted a video of his room being redecorated for their daughter with no explanation of what happened to him... yikes.

Notthetoothfairy · 28/05/2020 21:48

How absolutely horrific. She’s right about one thing though, the poor little boy is definitely going to be better off with someone less disgusting and immoral than her and her equally horrible husband.

ZoeCM · 28/05/2020 22:01

If their baby turns out to have SEN, will they find him a new "forever home" as well? I doubt it.

Perisoire · 28/05/2020 22:13

As much as I abhor what she has done, I think there may be more to the thumb sucking. My niece was a thumb sucker and she sucked it so much that it was red and blue with deep bite marks. We all tried to discourage her from it.

I can see why someone would be worried about excessive thumb sucking. However, it never occurred to any of us to duct tape her hand or similar, we would hold niece's hand and kiss her poor thumb.

Hoppityfrog20 · 28/05/2020 22:28

I’m so disgusted by this woman’s behaviour. It sounds like she just adopted for the publicity without considering the impact on her family if she didn’t get the ‘perfect’ child and now she has just cast this poor child away like a dog.

She doesn’t look like she’s short of a bob or two so I’m sure she could have afforded to pay for some extra help...

Totally disgusted I hope that she loses all her followers and gets majorly kicked in the behind by Karma...what a totally vile human being.

Duggeehugs82 · 28/05/2020 22:43

As a parent with child with autism, the thumb sucking could be due to his sensory needs, my daughter has a chew buddy a plastic shape on string she regularly chews to regulate her sensory needs. It breaks my heart the more i read. I hope she no longer able to be influencer.

Mushypeasandchipstogo · 28/05/2020 22:46

FWIW I am absolutely disgusted with this woman’s behaviour too. What a vile woman. It shows what a sick world that we live in that she has any followers.

Adoptthisdogornot · 28/05/2020 23:20

I have just googled these people and I am utterly speechless. Heartbreaking. Shocking. I want to weep.

eeehbyegum · 29/05/2020 00:00

I said my piece earlier but realised that if any of you are following / subscribing to this utter bollox, then you are to blame frankly. Stop putting idiots like this on a pedestal. Do not give this an audience.

SavageBeauty73 · 29/05/2020 00:08

I haven't heard of her so googled. The use of 'rehome' is so awful.

Haworthia · 29/05/2020 00:10

Absolute monsters.

God told them to adopt a child with special needs? Did he also tell them to “rehome” him like a dog when the ABA didn’t cure him? Fucking hell.

Lordfrontpaw · 29/05/2020 00:12

I only heard about this because it came up in my ‘news’ feed. I can’t be doing with ‘follow my wonderful life’ stories but this one should be told.

That poor child was adopted out with good intentions - but did the agency do a thorough check? Did the parents understand the child’s issues? What support did the family get? How ‘easy’ is it to hand your child over when the situation becomes ‘uncomfortable’ of ‘difficult’? Why are children allowed to be exploited as accessories or props in people’s online lives?

NellMangel · 29/05/2020 00:15

Well based on this thread she's a shallow bitch and the system has totally failed a vulnerable little boy. Although I guess the "system" was simply a glorified shop. Hope he is placed with the right people this time.

Lordfrontpaw · 29/05/2020 00:19

I don’t know how the adoption system works in the US - is it or private agencies? So a business - a money making exercise.

Douberry · 29/05/2020 00:24

Absolutely vile, disgraceful excuses for human beings. My heart breaks thinking about that poor little boySad

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 29/05/2020 00:37

Nell

Remembering the recent Louis Theroux on US adoption and another documentary not by him years and years ago, both documentaries did strike me as the US system having a "shop" like quality, yes.

The one I saw, and it must be 10 years ago, they had all "available" children stand on a stage with numbers, like a cattle market, seriously. Sad

A little boy about 8 yrs old had gone to this "meet and greet" and the sight of this upset his foster mother so much she adopted him herself, though she really couldn't afford to.

I've never forgotten it, it was all so weird and very sad.

lyralalala · 29/05/2020 00:41

I think it’s important that any media campaign about this needs to be about the adoption, not about the family giving up.

The system needs to be changed so that this is less likely to happen.

We do not want people keeping children they don’t want or can’t cope with so that they don’t have to face the wrath of other people. That simply will consign some children to a shit life

It’s the initial process that needs change

Bumfuzzled · 29/05/2020 00:48

Horrendous woman. If you are on Instagram report her account. If enough people do it it may make a difference?

Howdidweenduphere · 29/05/2020 01:13

I'm honestly shocked by this story.. what a cruel cruel couple. And feel for his siblings too.

maria860 · 29/05/2020 01:19

Truth is they wouldn't of done this to a biological child that's what makes it so sad for me that he was easy to just discard.
My youngest has adhd and asd would it be ok for me to stick him in care and get him 'rehomed' because he doesn't fit the image of my life or isn't like my other two kids because he's such hard work.
Some days are so hard he makes me cry but he's my son and the day they adopted this boy he became their son not a trophy to show off for a while then when they got bored because he wasn't improving enough they just Rehome him like an old cat they don't want anymore. Absolutely pathetic people please let them stop posting on social media and hide under a rock somewhere they make me sick..not sorry

PlantPottingPlantPotting · 29/05/2020 01:43

Other PP is correct. If he was a biological child I doubt she’d of done this. It’s an easy way out for them both, they don’t feel they have any loyalty to him which makes me doubt whether they ever bonded with him. To refer to the process as “rehoming” is appalling too. But she was right about one thing, the child will be better off without them

WhatWouldYouDoWhatWouldJesusDo · 29/05/2020 01:56

Did you people see what she did to his fucking hands ?

What an evil bitch. And she seemed to think it was an ok thing to do 😳

Have the authorities been involved to check on this child's welfare ?? Because it wouldn't be the first time one of these American 'adoptions' has resulted in a dead child.
