I don't get it. We had more deaths yesterday than the day we went into lockdown. Everyone is acting like Covid has gone away and so many people seem to naively think the government easing things is because the situation is magically going away now rather than driven by their economic priorities. We already have the second highest death rate it the WORLD yet it seems lots of people are desensitised to hearing about people dying now. I get that everyone wants to 'think positively' and feel like things are getting better but I feel like people are naively celebrating the governments easing of lockdowns with such faith rather than caution.

I think people are recognising that the government won't act in their best interests. Or even logically.

And are transparently preparing to throw scientists and Sage under a bus.

So people are taking educated risks.

The chances of a child or healthy adult of any age dying of covid are incredibly low.

So people are making decisions which will work best for their family, keep them sane, pay the rent/bills/etc.

I completely agree with everything you've said, OP. Unfortunately, you are about to be inundated with responses saying that enough is enough, "we need to get back to normal" and citing numerous examples of other countries who have eased restrictions and been fine while conveniently ignoring that those countries death rates are tiny in comparison with ours and that they locked down much quicker and with tighter restrictions to stop the spread and implemented a rigourous system of testing, tracking and tracing early on while we still had crowds of people mingling at large scale concerts and sporting events and our PM was going on TV telling everyone it should be "business as usual".

The deaths yesterday were higher due to the weekend backlog. If you’re going to quote stats you need to understand them.

Look at the rolling 7 day average for deaths, they are coming down but it is more like a plateau than a decline unfortunately.

The threads called something like Daily data, graphs are great for really understanding the stats available.

We're passed the peak, lockdown has done what it was supposed to do, yes the government should have acted earlier and probably locked down harder but that can't be undone. We can't carry on like this, it isn't sustainable. People are making their own risk assessments because they have lost all faith in the government, can't say I blame them.

The numbers reported every day are death's registered, not actual death's. The death toll has been falling consistently since the peak on 8 April and many of them are sadly happening in care homes.

The deaths statistic is really irrelevant though, as is the total death count. If you look at the reporting, only about 30 of them actually died yesterday (sorry haven't looked at the number, only a graph but it looked like less than 50). They could have caught it anywhere from 2 to 8 or more weeks ago. Time to move on, if you're scared, stay at home.

Agreed everyone says it over shops are rammed the economy should be picking up because we sure are spending like its christmas

In my area 0.2% of the population have had covid.

It makes no sense to stay in, to not work, to have lock down as a blanket thing for figures like this.

Lockdown was not to stop it but to prevent the overwhelming of the NHS. That has been achieved.

I understand for certain individuals they need to take different precautions to protect themselves and in the future there may need to be localised lockdowns.

Yes Covid is out there but so is flu, chicken pox etc and so risk needs to be managed with hand washing, masks and track and trace.

Lockdown is no longer the only tool we have to manage this disease.

What do you expect people to do? be shaking with fear? too scared to leave their house? people are adapting to the new rules/guidelines we have now which means we can now go to work, spend time outside etc

Noone has ever said ah its all gone now- and you know it, thats just exaggerated hyperbole to get your point across. Its not normal for people to be living in fear and its not sustainable or healthy in the long run. I'm actually kind of baffled why you'd even want this because its certainly not a healthy way to live. We need to get back to some semblance of normal now and if you want to talk about deaths- there have beenan unprecedented 1700 deaths where people died at home, completely unconnected to covid because they think they didnt seek medical help when needed- but i guess you are one of those who think the only deaths that matter are covid deaths?

The daily death statistic is not deaths that actually happened on the day, it's new deaths reported. The rolling average is still falling for deaths and new infections are decreasing too.

We can't stay locked up forever.

There hasn't been a case confirmed in our area for 6 days, and yes the daily death totals still contain deaths from March and early April so not reflective of what is happening right now.

Across Europe 95% of those who have died have been over 90. Every death is sad of course but it shows those of an age to send children to school or go to work are pretty much safe (statistically speaking) swine flu was horrific and killed more people (proportionately) in the younger age bracket but we didn’t shut down then.

We have all been terrified by the media that this is a death sentence because that is what the government wanted. They knew they had stripped the NHS down to the bone and weren’t sure that it would cope, so people were scared into staying inside. Now they realise the NHS can cope (only 12% of ventilators being used now are for covid patients) it’s all about acceptable risk. It IS an acceptable risk. You are more likely to be hit by a car than die of covid if you are under 70.

I personally think we should have carried on and only shielded those at risk - with the economy still going benefits paid to them could have been more generous and support would have been less stretched and could be targeted to where it was really needed.

We all know that the government are driven by their economic priorities. But the economy affects all of us OP. The suffering associated with widespread job losses, higher taxes to pay the furlough bill etc will be worse for many of us than Covid has been. That's why we need to start easing lockdown.

Well I am in Wales and we're still in complete lockdown here. Yanbu OP.

People aren't acting like it's all over, but people are making their own risk assessments and coming to the conclusion they're happy to take the risk and carry on with life. Lockdown itself is killing people too, and not just those who were going to die in the next year anyway.

We took DS to the park yesterday for a walk and it was absolutely heaving, has been pretty much empty for the last few weeks.

There was a lot more traffic on the road too. I have also noticed a more lax attitude in the corner shop, from both the owner and customers.

The current situation isn't sustainable op. @thegreenlight has it right. I am far more worried about the financial crisis that's looming than I am about catching covid, and I say that as someone over 65. I want to get on with what's left of my life, not spend it under house arrest.

I took my children to the beach. It was bloody lovely. We snorkelled, dug holes, had a picnic, ate an ice-cream. Didn't feel 'unsafe' (whatever the fuck that means) at any point and it did wonders for all of our states of mind.

I can highly recommend it.

I agree that some people are taking the piss about social distancing in public for example a woman leaned across me yesterday in the shop to give something to the lady behind the till. She also leaned across a group of girls who were all standing very close together choosing drinks for their meet up. This was just in one shop I dread to think what is happening elsewhere.

That being said I do think that people need to live again. I have noticed that the more I'm in the house, the more bloody petrified I am. It makes you feel alone, anxious and angry which isn't good for my family. My son's behaviour is awful, he crys all the time, he is angry and has started biting himself in frustration due to not being able to understand what is going on. I let him see his grandparents at the weekend (young grandparents and we are their only family and they are our only family) he is now acting like a different child.

I have 100% stuck to the rules up until this weekend but as soon as I heard that non essential shops are opening, I thought fuck it I'm seeing my family!

Beach and parks here are very busy, same with the shops but in my experience most people are still adhering to social distancing
