To think it grossly unfair that Emily Maitlis won't be on Newsnight tonight and DC and BJ are still in their jobs?

It just sums up this shit country and the state it's in imo.

Watching Johnson stuttering and blustering his way through the select committee this afternoon showing that he doesn't have a grip on the crisis at all and then finding that Maitlis, who is excellent at her job, has been chastised and suspended feels like yet another blow to decency in the UK. It comes after the government refusing to appear on the show for weeks as well - too scared.

How much longer will this shit go on?

It’s shocking. As someone said on twitter earlier, it’s another example of a woman being punished for a man’s crime.

Relations between the BBC and the government are already awful so why have they buckled over this? Really shocking and disappointing. But the coverage will lead more people to see her piece.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 27/05/2020 21:24

They are politicians, they are expected to be twats.

A BBC presenter has to be impartial.

So, sadly, YABU.

Thecazelets · 27/05/2020 21:26

Yes, it's completely outrageous.

You can complain about her being removed though (I have), and I suppose at least it means people have circulated the original video of Maitlis's ( in my view) direct and accurate summary of events to people who might not have bothered to watch it otherwise.

crispysausagerolls · 27/05/2020 21:27

She is supposed to be impartial. It’s not like she mentioned the 3 labour MPs who broke lockdown rules.

TheHighestSardine · 27/05/2020 21:29

Maitlis' entirely factual summary is impartial, Chardonnay. No opinion or bias involved. Facts are facts, despite the politicians trying to rpetend otherwise.

ferntwist · 27/05/2020 21:29

YANBU. Maitlis told the truth. Her opening statement was the best summary I’ve seen anywhere on this scandal.

thistimelastweek · 27/05/2020 21:30

Does impartiality mean you have to pretend they are lying?

ferntwist · 27/05/2020 21:30

Baffling that Laura Kuenssberg is still on air. She’s so biased towards Boris Johnson it’s embarrassing.

thistimelastweek · 27/05/2020 21:31

Sorry, ' pretend they are not lying'

AnyFucker · 27/05/2020 21:32

What has happened to Emily ?

DrManhattan · 27/05/2020 21:32

Totally unfair. She did the right thing.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 27/05/2020 21:32

She should always remain impartial

But I think in this situation where there has been such hypocrisy, that we have been lied to so blatantly I think it can be over looked

All in this together... what a joke

SinglePringle · 27/05/2020 21:34

Coz Paxman and Andrew Neil never voice an opinion. Oh no.

It’s bollocks is what it is Angry

VenusTiger · 27/05/2020 21:34

Oh god!
News isn't what does Emily Maitlis think. News isn't what does a poll of apparently everyone asked think. Newsnight can discuss facts and statements, not have a flavour or twist of an opinion from what is supposed to be an impartial broadcast. The BBC have actually said that her rantings were not impartial.

DrManhattan · 27/05/2020 21:34

& why is women who get this sort of treatment. Naga M had the same when she was sticking up for herself.
Just follow your instincts (unless you are not part of the government)

chrislilleyswig · 27/05/2020 21:34

Really @crispysausagerolls ?
I didn't see three labour mps giving a presser in the grounds of Downing Street, so what relevance?

CharlottesPleb · 27/05/2020 21:36

YABU.

She has no business taking money to be a BBC journalist, with an express duty to be impartial, money that is extracted from rich and poor on pain of prison, then acting like she's left wing Tucker Carlson.

I am forced to pay for her to actively not do her very simple low stakes job and broadcast it to the country. How is that remotely fair?

Doggybiccys · 27/05/2020 21:36

Genuine question - did she write the intro - I thought they read off auto cues from pre written statements. Even if she did write it, surely it gets “passed” by others too? How can one individual be held to account for this?

VenusTiger · 27/05/2020 21:37

@chrislilleyswig it's extremely relevant given the subject being discussed on the programme - so, Scots Transport Police Chief, Kinnock, Cummings - all broke lockdown guidelines - discuss them ALL.

Sparklfairy · 27/05/2020 21:38

@AnyFucker www.theguardian.com/media/2020/may/27/bbc-switches-emily-maitlis-in-newsnight-episode-over-cummings-remarks

Did she actually write the autocue she was reading from though?

AnyFucker · 27/05/2020 21:38

Ta

MaxNormal · 27/05/2020 21:39

Yes Kuensberg gets to stay on and lick all the Tory ring she likes?

Justanotherlurker · 27/05/2020 21:41

I think you need to look up the word 'impartiality' ?

Putting aside the situation with the government currently, when people ask why we don't have better quality politicians across the spectrum THIS is the reason. Our media are utterly shameless in how they conduct themselves from the Tabloids to the ridiculous hot takes by media pundits. The moment we get anyone remotely decent, competent or capable the media hound them into the ground. You'd have to be insane to be a politician even if you had your heart in the right place.

Leverson 2.0 cannot come soon enough for these vultures...

It is quite funny how the vocal left have suddenly become pro BBC now though.

AnneLovesGilbert · 27/05/2020 21:41

Thanks Thecazelets I’ve just done it.
