To think it grossly unfair that Emily Maitlis won't be on Newsnight tonight and DC and BJ are still in their jobs?

It just sums up this shit country and the state it's in imo.

Watching Johnson stuttering and blustering his way through the select committee this afternoon showing that he doesn't have a grip on the crisis at all and then finding that Maitlis, who is excellent at her job, has been chastised and suspended feels like yet another blow to decency in the UK. It comes after the government refusing to appear on the show for weeks as well - too scared.

How much longer will this shit go on?

Another day and Emily remains sacked from Newsnight. Long may it continue.

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 29/05/2020 23:02

Do you know what sacked means zombie?

She only works monday, Tuesday and Wednesday i think

JudyCoolibar · 29/05/2020 23:07

The BBC is perfectly entitled to have people on propagating left wing views, and it does. It is also perfectly entitled to have people on propagating right wing views, and it does. Look at the totally disproportionate amount of air time Farage had last year.

It's called balance. Thank goodness we have at least one channel that supplies it.

CendrillonSings · 29/05/2020 23:21

Don’t be ridiculous. Farage is not an employee and is not the presenter of the BBC’s flagship news programme. When does Newsnight display the same extreme bias in the other direction? It doesn’t, because it’s institutionally left-wing.

BubblesBuddy · 29/05/2020 23:31

What did Emily Maitlis say that was left wing? That’s utter rubbish. It was an opinion piece to introduce a debate.

The day the bbc is funded by subscription, like Cummings and the right wing wants, is the day it becomes second or third class. It will have to get money from other sources and they are no better. Subscriptions won’t keep the quality we are used to. I value it highly and Farage and Co were given virtually unlimited airtime as were Cummings’s three word slogans. All The Time. So much so, an alternative more nuanced argument was bludgeoned into submission.

This exact government (around 100 MPs with ministerial posts) has not been in power for 10 years in terms of who is in charge and who’s in it. The topics of today are very different from 10 years ago although economic hardship will start to bite and the cost of bailing out the economy will become a major talking point as 10 years ago.

ZombieFan · 29/05/2020 23:40

So for over £260,000 a year she only works part time. Disgraceful.

Thats what someone on another thread said...don’t watch newsnight so no idea if its true
RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 29/05/2020 23:43

Actually to be fair

She only presents on Monday Tuesday and Wednesday...according to the other poster

So I don’t actually know what she works

Caplin · 29/05/2020 23:46

She wasn’t meant to work, it was always meant to be Katie Razzall.

@ZombieFan she gets that money as compensation for having the nation prying on every facet of her life, scrutinising every comment she makes, hounding her on social media. And the fact she is anchoring a hugely iconic show, has to do a ton of research and is expected to hold the great and the good to account.

If you or you mate could do it to the same standard for less, go audition.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 30/05/2020 00:34

Nope. She said "see you tomorrow" as she signed off and tv listings showed she was due to be on. Katie Razzall on her Twitter feed made a comment about stepping in to replace Emily.

Bluemoooon · 30/05/2020 08:46

The BBC were extreme remainers in the Brexit debate. Their shock at the result showed how London centred they are. Still haven't learned from their mistake imv. Despite the whole country paying their licence fee they obviously had nooooooo clue what views on Brexit were outside the London bubble. Which is pretty unforgivable for a national service.
And lately the news is about Covid19 and absolutely nothing else. There's mention of HK and USA riots and nooooooooooooothing else. I don't get it they surely still have overseas correspondents even if they are reporting from home. We are interested in how other countries are coping but nooooooooo just negative story after negative story about how someone has suffered here. I think they are trying to bring the Gov down in the hope of another Brexit vote.

JudyCoolibar · 30/05/2020 08:53

But Nick Robinson, died in the wool Conservative supporter, is an employee and presents the flagship Today programme. Again, it's called balance.

And your problem is that what Emily Maitlis said was (a) largely factual, not left or right wing, and (b) has been echoed by several other people whom nobody would call left wing in a million years - e.g. Steve Baker and numerous other Conservative MPs.

awaynboilyurheid · 30/05/2020 08:54

This is misogyny at its finest so shocked at this. Male presenters are allowed to have confrontational styles yet EM was talking about a discussion that was coming up later and she is replaced!
YANBU at ALL It’s absolutely disgraceful.

Tavannach · 30/05/2020 12:38

She'll be working but not onscreen.
You seem to be struggling a bit with the notion that a woman can manage to do a responsible job as ably as, or better than, a man.
She's not a presenter, she's a journalist - one of the best.

Do you think she plays by the spirit of the rules? Or do you think maybe BBC employees should pay their fair share of taxes? Do you think Emily pays 50% income tax on her massive £260,000+ salary. Or maybe she is a massive hypocrite and is happy to ignore the 'spirit' of the rules and fine a loophole to avoid paying tax? People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

I think she pays her taxes.
There is no evidence to suggest otherwise.

You should be more careful about what you allege. AKAIK the law of libel applies to the internet. I'm not sure shoving "Maybe" into your rant would be enough to save you.

It’s a question not a statement

Is that for everyone or just famous people who can afford good lawyers? As I've been called a fair few things on here Grin

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 30/05/2020 20:23

Good god you’re grasping now zombie

First you said she’d been sacked when she hadn’t

Then you were pissed at how much she earned part time (That’s partly my fault I should have said presented not worked)

And now your pissed cos you don’t think she pays enough tax even though youve no idea

All ive personally said is Cummings should apologise

Would you be content if Emily did...cos it doesn’t sound as if you would be, you seem determined to get her for something

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 30/05/2020 20:26

OOOHHHH FUUUUUCK

didn’t caveat my post

Not a labour supporter

BubblesBuddy · 30/05/2020 20:30

The BBC has stopped “employees” being companies paying less tax. Some who had this arrangement were chased for huge amount of tax by HMRC. It’s not done now and she’s a top flight presenter/journalist so you would expect her to have a high income. If you remember men doing the same job earned more. Her salary has been raised to reflect her seniority and to ensure pay parity with men.

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 30/05/2020 20:31

I don’t even watch newsnight

I had to google Emily Maitlis

BubblesBuddy · 30/05/2020 20:32

Oh and it’s about time women supported other women who are high achievers instead of complaining about them and suggesting they are dishonest.
