To think it grossly unfair that Emily Maitlis won't be on Newsnight tonight and DC and BJ are still in their jobs?

It just sums up this shit country and the state it's in imo.

Watching Johnson stuttering and blustering his way through the select committee this afternoon showing that he doesn't have a grip on the crisis at all and then finding that Maitlis, who is excellent at her job, has been chastised and suspended feels like yet another blow to decency in the UK. It comes after the government refusing to appear on the show for weeks as well - too scared.

How much longer will this shit go on?

Those of you saying she’s showing bias, have you heard the analogy that if one person says it’s raining and another says it’s sunny, it isn’t The job of a journalist to report both answers, it’s to look out of the window and check.
If the government says it’s raining and someone else says it’s sunny, a BBC journalist looking out of the window and reporting it is, in fact, sunny is not showing bias against the government. He/she is reporting the facts - even if they disagree with what the government says.

BlueRaincoat1 · 27/05/2020 22:41

"Grossly unfair. Everything she said is fact, not opinion. It’s not her fault our PM and his most special advisor are so shit that people reporting facts sound like a smear campaign against him."

Well said @peapod29 !

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 27/05/2020 22:41

Im loving this quote business...so much easier

ZombieFan · 27/05/2020 22:41

The BBC should be able to give whatever opinion they want and express it as if it was a fact as long as they are voicing the same opinions facts as the current braying mob. The BBC are not meant to support the government they are meant to oppose it, as viciously and enthusiastically as they decide is good for ratings. Remainers should have a voice on the news, someone has to stop Brexit and get us a permanent extension.

Doggybiccys · 27/05/2020 22:43

@Sertchgi123 The BBC should be impartial. The press in this country are dangerously out of control. It’s about time a journalist had their knuckles rapped

The government and the PMs chief adviser are lying to us and are so out of control it’s scary - yet you want to see a reputable journalist get their knuckles rapped?

ssd · 27/05/2020 22:44

Totally agree with you op

EdwinaMay · 27/05/2020 22:45

Well she didnt verbalise what I'm saying.
She's a biased reporter and deserves what she got. No pollster has asked me my opinion.

Thecazelets · 27/05/2020 22:45

@Speakeasy22 I respectfully disagree with your second point, but unlike the government I'm not going to make a complaint about it and get it/you removed.

The NCTJ has made a powerful statement on what journalism is for, and it seems more relevant than ever these days.

😂 The bbc is so biased it is corrupt to the core. Jimmy Saville was fine, no problem at all. French escorting immigrants to our to our shores, daily Fine no problem. But the hysteria over a car Journey makes me sick. And so many idiots on here believe the BBC?? Mind boggles.

BertiesLanding · 27/05/2020 22:47

By all means, give her her own "The Emily Maitlis Report" - and then she can do what she did. But not on Newsnight.

I've heard it all now!
RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 27/05/2020 22:50

I think that’s supposed to be sarcastic sucking

Boireannachlaidir · 27/05/2020 22:50

OP the way you are snidely asking Venus why they're "ranty" and asking why they seem angry because they disagree with you is not dissimilar to David Cameron's "calm down dear". There's no need for it.

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 27/05/2020 22:50

But you might already know that in which case apologies! 😀

BreadandMarmalade · 27/05/2020 22:51

user

This site is historically left wing. It's exactly like the BBC...

😂

ZombieFan · 27/05/2020 22:51

Which one do you think trended ten times greater on twitter?
#sackcummings or #mediascum ?
I dont remember the BBC doing much reporting of the actual facts?
I wonder why!

Doggybiccys · 27/05/2020 22:52

I don’t get all this BBC impartiality. Does this mean for example that if they are reporting an ISIS terror attack on Westminster bridge, they should describe it as an act of grievance by a group of people opposed to western beliefs but who have their own justified belief system ??

CatAndHisKit · 27/05/2020 22:53

What was her opening statement? I've missed yesterday's Newsnight. Tried a few links on this thread but can't find the actual video.

strugglingwithdeciding · 27/05/2020 22:54

Grasping at straws springs to mind

Doggybiccys · 27/05/2020 22:56

@CatAndHisKit - stick her name into YouTube and it comes up - I can’t work out how to copy the link

theduchessstill · 27/05/2020 22:56

Sucking Government have talked about decriminalising non-payment of the licence fee, which would obviously have a terrible impact on BBC funding. They forced theBBC into a corner by forcing them to fund the free licences to the over 75s. They refuse to put ministers on Today and Newsnight. They constantly blackmail and threaten the corporation, which is obviously why we have this situation today. Horrible government, just vile in so many ways.

strugglingwithdeciding · 27/05/2020 22:57

@Doggybiccys no but they don't normally call something a certain attack until it's been proven etc so may use the words like possible or potential in front of it
Same as this lady a few different words in front such as dc has been accused etc
She would know what's expected of her and what is and isn't allowed and could work for another channel
If wanted to voice her own opinion which is probably what she will go and do

strugglingwithdeciding · 27/05/2020 23:00

@theduchess yes how mean if the government to make them give over 75's a Free licence
It won't exactly leave the bbc poverty stricken have you seen how much they pay presenters
I would be in favour of scrapping the licence and them having adverts but the bbc don't want that so have to stick to rules of being the national channel
You can blame the government for a lot but not this

BertiesLanding · 27/05/2020 23:00

No. They stay with the facts, not with what has been deduced from the facts.
LuluJakey1 · 27/05/2020 23:02

I thought what she said was absolutely as it is. However, she did not balance her speech at all so it becomes a view rather than a balanced presentation.
Cummings on the other hand 'balanced' his speech by supposedly recognising what 'reasonable people' might think about his actions and acknowledging he could have made other choices. It was evident that he didn't believe any of that was true and couldn't give a toss what anyone thinks and does not feel he has to answer to anyone. He had an hour of prime TV time to present his view to the country on every major channel.
Emily Maitlis spoke for 90 seconds maximum to a tiny BBC 2 late night audience.
