Would you rather people who voted Tory or don't absolutely hate the Government just stayed silent on threads?

As it seems pointless bothering on Mumsnet any more.

Personally I'm a bit sick of being called a bot because I voted Conservative.

There are a lot of threads with pained titles asking people to explain why they voted Tory/don't hate Boris Johnson etc but when it comes down to it noone is at all interested and it's just an excuse for a pile on.

YANBU - No, keep posting as I like to see both sides of an argument, I don't think you are a bot!

YABU - Yes, please just keep any Tory voting or opinions to yourself.

Why couldn’t we close the borders? Easiest thing in the world on an island.

Correct. But who to? All the Brits coming back from Half Term, all the kids on school trips? All the Brits who had to be repatriated? They all needed to come home. The answer probably is that they all needed to go into isolation at home at that point, but would people have complied that early on in the epidemic? I doubt it.

I believe Priti Patel wanted to do this but was overruled.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 26/05/2020 17:48

I think the scapegoating focus on the behaviour of the media comes mainly from conservative voters and is being wound up/spearheaded by the conservative party in a very trumpian manner.
The print media are behaving much as they always have for decades; social media has stirred the pot.
I don't think the government care what the general public think; I think they are very good at pretending that they do, and jumping on whatever bandwagon they can to appeal to the masses, hence the £350M/week for the NHS, which was a blatant lie. The government think the general public are, by and large, fools.
They govern for themselves, and for money.

MarshaBradyo · 26/05/2020 17:50

It is interesting to look to other countries but I wouldn’t choose Trump as a model on timing for closing borders.

Japan, Taiwan other SE Asian countries have done well but they have different systems to us, the one that has done well but is most similar is Germany.

Merkel has shown she understands the reality of virus v economy, makes considered decisions but most of all had early intervention and monitoring.

Baaaahhhhh · 26/05/2020 17:50

I have voted for pretty much everybody over my long years of voting. Would never join a party as I always assess each and every party at each and every election on their relative merits at that time. This last election I did quite a few on-line analyses, and every time I was bang smack in the middle of everyone...... what a nightmare voter I am.

So I do tend to get shit from all sides! But I suppose at least it's consistent.

Are you serious?! They've been terrible!

Baaah not at all you’re a useful voter. Like me your vote helps swing it.

I’d like to see Sunak and Starmer against each other and assess by policies.

ITonyah · 26/05/2020 17:54

And...Germany treated people at at a much earlier stage. 111 in the UK was absolutely shocking, not advising people to come to hospital unless they were literally blue. And the NHS discharging people back into carehomes. All very wrong.

No it hasn’t because their lockdown has been non existent.

I'm in NY and the lockdown has been quite serious here and case numbers have been falling for some time, so I'm not sure what gave you this impression.

Alsohuman · 26/05/2020 18:02

All the footage of redneck lockdown protesters and state governors capitulating might have have suggested it.

MarshaBradyo · 26/05/2020 18:15

I keep seeing people post that DC ‘has something on Johnson’.

It really is the mundane reason. DC is one of the best at his job, so won’t be let go.

MissConductUS · 26/05/2020 18:20

All the footage of redneck lockdown protesters and state governors capitulating might have have suggested it

The protesters might be a few thousand out of 330 million or so and the lockdowns were never intended to go on forever.

If we didn't have a broadly effective lockdown in NY how would you explain the sustained drop in new cases, hospitalizations and deaths? I think we're relaxing lockdown here pretty prudently.

By the way, the term "redneck" is quite pejorative and unwarranted after seeing them for a few seconds on the news.

mbosnz · 26/05/2020 18:22

DC is one of the best at his job

God help us all then. We're screwed, aren't we?

MarshaBradyo · 26/05/2020 18:24

Mbosnz it depends who you want to win. He’ll help you win if it’s your side he’s on.

mbosnz · 26/05/2020 18:25

Absolutely. His side is not the best interests of the UK general populace, as opposed to the rulers and the elite. And the UK General populace, is the side I want to survive win.

MarshaBradyo · 26/05/2020 18:30

I get that, Starmer will find it hard to get someone with the same instinct or perhaps doesn’t even have the will to, but he is formidable in his own right. Needs a good team though.

sixthtimelucky · 26/05/2020 18:31

I would never vote Conservative but plenty of my friends and family do or have done. I cannot stand the self-righteous attitude of SOME Labour voters or left wingers and the berating of people that don't think exactly as they do. We need to listen to each other we might actually learn something or change our minds about things or at least understand a different view point.

That said, I think this government is an absolute shit show and Cummings is a lying hypocrite!

MarshaBradyo · 26/05/2020 18:33

Actually hadn’t DC said he’s not particularly fussed which side? I know he said that about Brexit.

One fear could be that he could switch.

mbosnz · 26/05/2020 18:34

I have voted both Labour and Conservative, I vote according to the issues and to the people at the time of the election.

Having said that, both in NZ, and now here in the UK, there are people within parties that it will be a cold day that they are still not in hell that I will vote for a party that still has certain self-interested and corrupt bastards within its folds.

mbosnz · 26/05/2020 18:36

DC's side is actually fairly simple. It's DC, pure and simple. He's now actually selling his mouthpiece BJ and the Conservative Government down the river.

derxa · 26/05/2020 18:37

I voted Tory at the last election very reluctantly because i couldn't stomach JC and the people in his cabinet. I don't think this government have done well at all but what do I know. They underestimated people's willingness to lockdown. JC should have been sacked but don't think he did much wrong. At the heart of all this is that people refuse to see politicians and other posters as human beings with differing views.

Alsohuman · 26/05/2020 19:27

By the way, the term "redneck" is quite pejorative and unwarranted after seeing them for a few seconds on the news

It was intended to be perjorative, it was based on their behaviour.

ITonyah · 26/05/2020 20:53

Poor NY Sad I was very sad seeing some of the news footage from there.

I think they have made mistakes. I think the media are doing a poor job and love to stir up trouble.

I think journalists aren't really doing their job in holding ministers and the government to account and i think that is partly the reason why Cummings gets away with so much.

Sunak is doing a good job - I've been impressed with that and on that score I've been impressed that the Tory government saw the sense in implementing some very socialist policies. Long may that sense prevail.

Patel - well, i would have expected her to push to get the borders closed to foreigners rather than Brits returning, and i would have expected that everyone at least got a temperature check on arrival and told to at least self-isolate. Tracking and tracing should have started there, tbh. But anyhoo.

It's a pity that the UK didn't grasp the opportunity to get rid of FPTP voting. Over here (Germany) i vote for the best local rep (which has in the past included the CDU which are sort of Centre Right Tories) and the local candidate of the Left (which is an actual party, to the left of the centre-left SDP) based purely on what i think they will do for my local area. However i also get to choose based on a national level because of party lists and AV so i can vote for a completely different party for a national government.

We usually end up with a coalition and i usually don't mind which of the 2 main parties actually provides the Chancellor since the coalition usually manages to cancel out the extreme left or right of their respective parties.

As an MP i like Corbyn but i don't think he'd make a good PM - not least because of the campaign against him which made a good number of people think he would be something like a Stalin/Gengis Khan hybrid. Starmer? We'll see.

One thing is clear though: Johnson is the worst PM I've ever experienced.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 27/05/2020 10:06

Sorry ITonyah I don't think I got my point across well.
I think the media has been what the media always has been, both terrible and excellent depending on your viewpoint and preferences.
But they've always been that way, it's only relatively recently that the media as a whole ('MSM') have been targeted with all this #scummedia nonsense.
They are doing their job, most of us don't like certain outlets depending on our viewpoints, but that's generally been accepted before as just part of the game.
