Sam Smith

This may be old news but I have just come across it whilst reading another thread here and had a bit of a Google to find out about it.

Straight away, the headline - Sam Smith asks to be referred to as “they” instead of “he” after declaring themself as gender neutral.

Now I don't like the bloke for many reasons but isn't asking to be referred to as 'they' implying that there is more than one?

Yes I know this is a pointless thread but I'm curious.

And it's fine anyway, I reported it ages ago. MNHQ have a terrible habit of ignoring transphobia.

Iggi999 · 26/05/2020 19:10

Is it the whole thread you think is transphobic or individual posts?

Witchcraftandhokum · 26/05/2020 19:10

The original premise of the thread and some of the comments.

pumpkinbump · 26/05/2020 19:11

Well I did as I have said numerous times. I've also asked my friend today if she had heard of the term they in this context and she hasn't either. But whether you believe it was an innocent question or not is up to you. Maybe make your way over to the Dominic Cummings threads and ask for them to be deleted too.

It isn't pile on. People are allowed an opinion about people, famous or otherwise.

OP posts:
pumpkinbump · 26/05/2020 19:13

No one has displayed anything that even hints towards transphobia. How could they? Sam Smith isn't transgender or transexual.

MNHQ have a terrible habit of ignoring transphobia.

Are you on glue? They have the toughest rules against it of any social media I can think of.

Every thread about SS disappears sooner or later but, of course they are wrong not to immediately leap to obey you.

Eckhart · 26/05/2020 19:15

Ah, well. There you go then. Pumpkin's friend hasn't heard of it either. It must be pretty rare then.

Iggi999 · 26/05/2020 19:15

Pumpkinbump Trans people include transgender, cross dressers and non binary.

popehilarious · 26/05/2020 19:17

Non-binary identities can fall under the definition of 'trans'. As can 'agender' and 'gender-free' people.

Witchcraftandhokum · 26/05/2020 19:17

Really I don't expect them to obey me (but it would be fabulous if they did) and really I reported this to highlight that MNHQ don't delete transphobia threads and that's why they're losing advertisers.

But you carry on shouting that there's no transphobia while companies distance themselves.

Iggi999 · 26/05/2020 19:19

Companies who have made the choice to distance themselves from mumsnet have not made this decisions based on an analysis of the threads on mumsnet and coming to the conclusion there is too much transphobia, have they? They've done it as they have given in to pressure from activists on social media.

pumpkinbump · 26/05/2020 19:20

Maybe because it isn't about transphobia. To have a discussion about something doesn't make one phobic. I don't think any of the comments on here have been transphobic.

OP posts:
Witchcraftandhokum · 26/05/2020 19:23

But they're at best I unkind comments invited by a thread mocking his gender fluidity.

pumpkinbump · 26/05/2020 19:24

I am sorry the definition I found on transphobic is

dislike of or prejudice against transsexual or transgender people.

"more than 120 complaints concerning transphobia in the media were made"

I apologise for the oversight.

OP posts:
Witchcraftandhokum · 26/05/2020 19:26

Would you also mock the transgender student I work with who self-harms everytime his PE teacher says "OK girls"?

LillianBland · 26/05/2020 19:28

Oh stop it! 🙄 You know bloody rightly that any teacher that committed such a transgression would immediately be pulled up on it and disciplined. Stop making things up to bait posters.

Love51 · 26/05/2020 19:29

@Lordfrontpaw
TAFKAP, or the artist.
Short for The Artist Formerly Known As Prince.
Obvs.

ConstanceSalinger · 26/05/2020 19:29

Though you could say "I met Sam Smith yesterday. They were really nice"

You probably wouldn't having met Sam Smith as they are really quite an unpleasant individual. Which funnily enough is usually directed at women.

Witchcraftandhokum · 26/05/2020 19:32

Lillian you shout that I am making this up because it suits your narrative. I am not making this up. The reason she is not disciplined is because we understand that when you have know a student of one gender for years and now you have to change the language, slip-ups will be made. Disciplining that would be ridiculous.

OneForMeToo · 26/05/2020 19:32

Sam has a couple of good songs but they is untimely a knob Regardless of their feelings or sex.

pumpkinbump · 26/05/2020 19:33

Witch, I wasn't mocking his gender fluidity. It was for the umpteenth time, a genuine question. Maybe it is silly that I have never heard of it before, but I really hadn't. The original wasn't even about describing oneself as non gender, it was about the use of that specific word.

And Eckhart, I asked my friend because I thought it was ridiculous of me to never have heard of it when so many we incredulous to the fact I hadn't. And she hadn't either. That was just a fact I posted, there was no need to be sarcastic about it.

I'm not hugely knowledgeable on the subject of gender identity which is why I posted the thread in the first place.

Never mind reporting this thread for being transphobic (which it isn't), many posts should be reported for becoming a witch hunt by people who obviously know everything and never have a bad word to say about anyone.

OP posts:
Eckhart · 26/05/2020 19:33

Basically Pumpkin, you're holding forth on what other people should call other people. Sam Smith is holding forth about what other people should call Sam Smith.

Your point has nothing to do with you. Sam Smith's point has everything to do with Sam Smith.

Witchcraftandhokum · 26/05/2020 19:35

Couldn't have put it better myself Eckhart

pumpkinbump · 26/05/2020 19:36

And you witch, and many others have decided I am lying about my original reason for the post to suit youselves in the pursuit of another witch hunt. Not once have I called anyone names here yet I have been called ignorant and immoral.

OP posts:
LillianBland · 26/05/2020 19:38

Yeah, but you’re only a woman, so that’s ok.
