To hope this racist woman loses her job

twitter.com/melodyMcooper/status/1264965252866641920?s=19. Was appalled to see this video on Twitter - a guy in Central park, NYC, who was birdwatching, politely asked a woman to put her dog on the lead as per the regulation in that part of the park. He started filming it as she got abusive and called the cops, to say that she (white) and her dog were being threatened by an African-American man and could they send the police (as we know this can often result in a shooting). All the while she was holding her dog up by dangling it from its collar, half strangling it. The man left and his sister put the video on Twitter, resulting in the racist dog strangler being identified very quickly... she has a high powered job with an insurance company. The animal shelter took back the dog, and her company says she is on 'administrative leave' hopefully meaning she will get fired. I was really shocked and dismayed that such open racism is still going on, even though she was being filmed! Surely she must lose her job at least, what company would want to be linked to something like this?

If i was being threatened by a man who happened to be black I would call the police and say there is a black man threatening me

Bring that up if needing a description, yes.
Why would you bring it up in your initial phone call though?
Would you say a white man was threatening you?
Surely it's just a man threatening you?

Schoenes · 26/05/2020 13:36

I haven't seen the video so there may be nuances in tone, body language etc. However I think some people forget race is also part of someone's physical description. Please don't bother to comment then.

Coyoacan · 26/05/2020 13:36

The thing is she is just an everyday example of everyday racism and unfortunately a lot of the posters defending her are also everyday examples of everyday racism.

Pretending she was being attacked, which is what she was doing, and harming the dog worked in her favour. She should not be on administrative leave, she should be in prison as an example for others.

How many black men are dead or in prison because they didn't have a camera on them.

VladmirsPoutine · 26/05/2020 13:37

Mumsnet needs to address the vile undercurrent of racism and transphobia that sadly exist on this site.

I remember the threads on Serena Williams, Meghan Markle, golliwogs being "fun toys", trying to explain why calling a black woman uppity is racist.

Mumsnet is a really racist site but because posters don't cross the line into actually advocating lynchings or supporting the KKK it doesn't break talk guidelines. Sometimes I am astonished that a lot of these women are actually astute, critical women but when it comes to race it all goes out the window. I stuck around for the 'My MiL wore a white dress to my wedding' threads but increasingly it's becoming really triggering to be here. Even that thread on the shooting of that young black man who was jogging brought out the racism deniers.

PippaHugo · 26/05/2020 13:38

We are not the oppressed. Stop with the faux outrage.

I am not convinced that middle aged white women are not oppressed.

I am a bit troubled by the Karen meme. I think the Karen meme can have sexist overtones.

Hadley Freeman wrote very well about it in the Guardian:

The Karen meme has become a way of not just describing women’s behaviour, but controlling it. No wonder so many men enjoy it.

www.theguardian.com/fashion/2020/apr/13/the-karen-meme-is-everywhere-and-it-has-become-mired-in-sexism

I guess for me the question is who is more vulnerable, a white woman walking alone in a park or an innocent black man whose race is being weaponised.

I am sure there are many more violent attacks on black men in Central Park than white women and, that being so, his victimhood therefore being much greater than hers.

However, I am with Hadley Freeman and Julie Bindel on the Karen meme.

SharonasCorona · 26/05/2020 13:39

@VladmirsPoutine yes, there are so many, once you enter the rabbit hole on YT (as a pp called it).

  • the two black women insulted by a white Hilton hotel receptionist when they asked why their reserved room wasn’t available
  • the black woman called the n word by a white woman and another woman told to go back home for daring to say ‘excuse me’ in Wal-mart
  • the Hispanic Uber driver getting his head punched in by the white Taco Bell exec

Omg I’ll be here ages If I post all links!

Lardlizard · 26/05/2020 13:40

That poor dog, she could have killed it !
There’s a lot of nutjobs out there
But seriously why do people have to film everything these days

totallyyesno · 26/05/2020 13:40

I hope she stands trial for this

For what??? Confused

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 26/05/2020 13:41

I agree wax

She didn’t want to be told by a black man she was doing something wrong - how dare He an African American tell Her what she was doing was wrong that was the issue

I don’t think she felt threatened she was angry

FTMF30 · 26/05/2020 13:41

@changeitupagain "I haven't seen the video. . ." 🙄. Maybe watch the video before giving an opinion.

CatherineOfAragonsPomegranate · 26/05/2020 13:42

Ok maybe @PanicOnTheStreets85 although I remain sceptical, but am willing to concede people do react differently when afraid. However on what basis was she 'afraid'? For 'her life'?

Her life really?

VladmirsPoutine · 26/05/2020 13:42

I am a bit troubled by the Karen meme. I think the Karen meme can have sexist overtones.

I'm glad it troubles you. Karens need to be called out for Karening.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 26/05/2020 13:42

Enthusiasm my apologies. I didn't read the sarcasm in your post! I understand now. Blush

LemonadeAndDaisyChains · 26/05/2020 13:42

But seriously why do people have to film everything these days

Can you blame him?!
I'm usually in the "why do people have to film everything these days" camp but in this case I think it's entirely justified, can you imagine what would have happened if he hadn't?
It'd be his word against hers.

matchboxtwentyunwell · 26/05/2020 13:42

If i was being threatened by a man who happened to be black I would call the police and say there is a black man threatening me

Of course you would. But I bet you would never call the police and say there was a white man threatening you. You would just say man.

VladmirsPoutine · 26/05/2020 13:44

For what???

She knew that if the police arrived and witnessed a white woman in distress in the proximity of a black man they might have reacted at best arresting him and at worst shooting him. She even said to him before she called the police that she was going to call the police and tell them she is being threatened by an African American man. She knew it would put him in shit. Do not act confused. White women trade on this behaviour. It comes intrinsically to them. She should be in jail.

KilljoysDutch · 26/05/2020 13:44

Absolute bunch of racist idiots on here today apparently.

To hope this racist woman loses her job
Destroyedpeople · 26/05/2020 13:45

You film people because it pulls them up short. More of us should do it. Certainly black men should. Once a guy was coming towards me threateningly but stopped short when I pretended to film him.

PanicOnTheStreets85 · 26/05/2020 13:45

Odd how people only think it’s important to describe someones skin colour when it isn’t white

I suppose as long as the majority of the population is white it's often the default unless mentioned otherwise.

But I think a pp nailed it in noting that she said to the man that she would phone up the police and tell them that she was being threatened by an African American man. There was no need for her to mention it to him other than an implicit threat referring to the police's track record with black people.

totallyyesno · 26/05/2020 13:45

But what would she be charged with? That's not a crime. You can't equate calling the police to threatening someone with a loaded gun. That's not how the system works. What would she be CHARGED with?

SharonasCorona · 26/05/2020 13:46

But seriously why do people have to film everything these days

To piss off people like you who don’t want to face the truth. Much easier to remain in blissful white privilege when there’s no video proof.

SharonasCorona · 26/05/2020 13:46

@totallyyesno wasting police time for a start

AKissAndASmile · 26/05/2020 13:46

Can't believe she's VP of an investment company. LOL. Hope she never works again.

WhatWouldYouDoWhatWouldJesusDo · 26/05/2020 13:47

He filmed her because she made a fake call to the police and started shouting out saying she was being assaulted.

I don't blame him at all, he was probably afraid of being shot given they seem to like potting off black people for any reason over there. 😳

Mittens030869 · 26/05/2020 13:47

’If I was black, male and living in America with police with guns I would be walking round with a body cam permanently on.‘

^Sadly, this 100%. The woman made a very chilling threat, knowing how it could end for the man.
