To give myself a buzz cut

I am so sick of my hair! It’s very thick, wavy, dry and coarse. It needs Brazilian keratin treatment to look anything like decent. It’s currently short, kind of chin length with grown out layers and a very short fringe. At the moment it is huge, I literally look like I have a lampshade on my head!
It’s dyed dark brown as I am half grey. I’m in my 50’s and have always had quite dramatic haircuts and colours.
Shall I use my sons hair clippers on the longest setting - number 8 and cut it all off for a fresh start? I could see if I like my natural grey then dye it a new colour if I don’t. Another reason I’m toying with this idea is if I like it I can carry on doing it
myelf with the clippers as I don’t think I will be able to afford haircuts if I ever get back to earning!
Any advice or opinions welcome 😅

Its very freeing isn’t it sarah 😀

Having said that I can’t wait til i can spike it again, ds1 did an awesome job but obviously I didn’t want him to make it spiky...too much stress for him

MaggieAndHopey · 26/05/2020 10:21

ah, thank you @LuckyAmy1986! I've decided I do want it to grow out - I haven't always buzzed it but it's been short for years. I've tried a couple of times before but have never made it past the awkward stage.

@Laska2Meryls that colour is fabulous. I love it.

I love your colour too @RufustheLanglovingreindeer . I'm salt and pepper too but wish there was a bit more salt in it. I'm 42 now, been greying since my 20s and stopped colouring it a few years ago, but it's still a bit neither here nor there.

Great to see so many gorgeous women rocking their shorn locks!

OscarWildesCat · 26/05/2020 10:24

I usually have a pixie crop but had grown it to chin length with the shorter layer about nose level. I cut a pixie back in with a combination of clippers, thinning scissors and cheap hairdressing scissors at the start if lockdown. I kind of wish I'd just done a full on clipper as I've always wondered what it would be like, some if you ladies look fab. I'll likely be back at work in the next month or so, so its probably best I don't do it now but its VERY tempting!

Skap · 26/05/2020 10:28

@ShowOfHands I love yours but it looks quite long for a clipper cut. How did you do it?
Pictures below.

You all look beautiful. I really want to do this now. Too many chins at the moment. Maybe it’s something I can focus on treating myself to when I lose some more weight - I used to have cheekbones and I’m hoping they will reappear.

ShowOfHands · 26/05/2020 10:48

DH has magic clippers Skap!

Back and sides are a number 8 and the top was done with a weird tool. It was a bit Tilda Swinton really. That photo is without product. I did it so that I could sweep the top into a sort of quiff a la Swinton.

I fancy just shaving off the whole lot though.

ShowOfHands · 26/05/2020 10:51

A different photo of it slightly longer

Skap · 26/05/2020 11:09

ShowOfHands Ah I need a weird tool then. Love the colour as well.
Mine was a lovely colour pre-chemo, blonde with about 25% grey. It grew back white at first and is now coming through a definite mouse. It has also developed a quiff all on it's own.

Midsommar · 26/05/2020 11:16

@swampytiggaa your buzzcut hair proper suits you! You look amazing girl

Hormoanal · 26/05/2020 12:48

Hmm, mine was pixie-ish at the start of lockdown, so looks woeful now. And you lot are making me want to sort it out now.

I don't have clippers, though the dog does. Wonder if hers would manage it? Grin

LizTaylorsFabulousTurban · 26/05/2020 14:03

This is such a great thread! I did the chop yesterday but am too shy to show you. I am happy with it though (and the money I'm going to save on shampoo and haircuts! Not to mention the time saved getting ready).

Skap · 26/05/2020 16:51

Hormoanal early in lockdown clippers were sold out everywhere. Someone on here kindly pointed out that dog clippers are essentially the same and much cheaper Grin.

Laska2Meryls · 26/05/2020 17:45

also you can.buy sets of universal clipper guides on ebay if you have any missing.. we did, as old clippers from way back unused for years which had lost some of the guided

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 26/05/2020 17:51

I don't have the patience to grow it out

Once you've cut it, no choice (other than a wig)

Good to know Skap, thank you Grin
Thurmanmurman · 26/05/2020 19:16

Personally I'd never have the guts, but those who've posted pics all look great and can totally pull it off! Go for it OP, it's only hair, it grows back.

BibiBlocksberg · 26/05/2020 20:02

All of you courageous buzzcut souls look great!

Armi, bet you’d look great with short hair too, not sure where that myth came from re ‘chubby’ faces don’t suit short haircuts but its bollocks imho :) Coming from one who thought the same about herself for years then found a lopsided pixie cut suited v well indeed.

Definitely too long now though especially w the warmer weather!

This tutorial made me buy the clippers but am now thinking it looks too easy, its not gonna be as simple le as she makes it out to be is it?

JRUIN · 26/05/2020 20:35

Omg I've been thinking to take a razor to my head the past couple of weeks but just haven't got the guts. I wish I did because I think it would be so liberating and lovely and cool in this hot weather too. I say go for it if you dare.

swampytiggaa · 26/05/2020 21:45

Another advantage. I fell over and broke my arm this morning. At least I don’t have to worry about doing my hair...

EmpressLangClegInChair · 26/05/2020 21:56

Poor you tiggaa. I hope it’s not hurting you much. But yes, I put my hairbrush away months ago!

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 26/05/2020 21:59

But yes, I put my hairbrush away months ago

I very nearly had to buy a comb

Ive not combed or brushed my hair in over 20 years

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 26/05/2020 22:09

Oh crikey Tiggaa - hope you’re ok! Good timing in that respect though Grin

Saitama · 26/05/2020 22:26

I got a buzz cut 2 days ago but a bit longer on top. I was sick of being hot and fannying around taking ages to brush and wash my hair. So far I love it and its sooo comfortable. Do it ! If you don’t like it it’s not the end of the world and it’ll grow back :)

MaggieAndHopey · 27/05/2020 06:42

Hope you heal up soon @swampytiggaa!

aLilNonnyMouse · 27/05/2020 10:54

@Hormoanal I can also confirm dog clippers work fine! I let OH pick out clippers on Amazon as he really wanted his hair done as the chemo makes it itchy when it gets long.

He hid the package and did both of our heads before confessing. I never would have noticed if not for the picture of the pug on the instruction book he showed me - looked and felt exactly the same as the normal ones and worked just fine.
