To give myself a buzz cut

I am so sick of my hair! It’s very thick, wavy, dry and coarse. It needs Brazilian keratin treatment to look anything like decent. It’s currently short, kind of chin length with grown out layers and a very short fringe. At the moment it is huge, I literally look like I have a lampshade on my head!
It’s dyed dark brown as I am half grey. I’m in my 50’s and have always had quite dramatic haircuts and colours.
Shall I use my sons hair clippers on the longest setting - number 8 and cut it all off for a fresh start? I could see if I like my natural grey then dye it a new colour if I don’t. Another reason I’m toying with this idea is if I like it I can carry on doing it
myelf with the clippers as I don’t think I will be able to afford haircuts if I ever get back to earning!
Any advice or opinions welcome 😅

there's a great youtube video for a DIY graded buzz telling what guards to use where.

If you followed that and didn't like it you can still do it again shorter

HowManyToes · 25/05/2020 23:33

I bought clippers to do my DH's hair s few weeks into lockdown - he was starting to look like a burst cushion. The temptation to 'do a britney' - as he put it - was huge! But I've got a wee fat face so I don't think I'd suit it

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 25/05/2020 23:41

I always have my hair in an asymmetric cut - a couple of weeks ago I used clippers to do the short side, it was a lot easier than I'd expected (half a day choosing which clippers, ha few hours watching you tube videos of how to do it).
The gradation at the back between long and short isn't quite the same as the hairdresser manages, but its fine.
Go for it - at least if you don't like it, you won't be going anywhere for a while, so it will have a chance to grow! Grin

I saw a girl today with a number 1 all over, she had very cold purple make up and dark lipstick. It looked amazing.

helloPig · 25/05/2020 23:54

i do the side of mine at a number 5. since lockdown it’s all got out of hand and looked terrible, so i bought myself some remington beard trimmers off amazon and did it myself. it’s not bad, and makes the rest look much happier.

DimplesToadfoot · 25/05/2020 23:55

Do it :-) its hair, it grows back :-)

I did it 2 years ago, my hair was long but full of thick ends, multi tones from bleaching, high lighting or going from chocolate to light brown so I had a number 4 all over, I absolutely loved it. It's about 2 years since and my hair is long again, I haven't learnt my lesson as it's now purple, but it's in fabulous condition :-) p.s. I'm the wrong side of 50 lol

BibiBlocksberg · 26/05/2020 00:28

HowManyToes :) :) Sure you’d look great but sharing in your fears here.

Bought a set of clippers weeks ago but not been brave enough to use them yet.

Have a sneaking suspicion that the minute i shear it all off my hairdresser will announce they are re-opening 😆

HowManyToes · 26/05/2020 00:38

@bibiBlocksberg I'm also a secondary school teacher which adds to my fear - my kids are brutally honest!

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 26/05/2020 01:12

Ok so jealous of all your crew cuts!! Love them.

EmpressLangClegInChair · 26/05/2020 01:20

Do it!

My clippers arrived last weekend & I gave myself a Grade 1 at the sides, Grade 2 on top. I’m pretty pleased with it but it took much longer than I expected and I seemed to have much more hair than I thought, given the amount that ended up on the newspapers on the floor afterwards.

aLilNonnyMouse · 26/05/2020 02:48

I normally have mine short and spiky, but I did a number 4 all over a few weeks ago as it was getting annoying. Long enough to fall into my glasses bit too short to brush back.

I don't regret it at all. I'm letting it grow from here so I can pick a new hairstyle when this is all over (sheilding so expecting that to be a good few months).

I like it a lot more than I was expecting to!

swampytiggaa · 26/05/2020 06:35

@EmpressLangClegInChair I know right? I’ve redone mine 3 times since the first time. Always amazed how much hair comes off!

MaggieAndHopey · 26/05/2020 06:51

This is mine, grown out by a couple of weeks. If you do a longer grade on the top and shorter on the sides, it gives it a bit of shape. For a short pixie, an 8 on the top and 5-6 on the sides will do the trick. I plan to just keep trimming the sides and let the top grow until I can get to a professional!

Nomorewine77 · 26/05/2020 06:52

I did this 3 weeks ago, fed up with my over processed damaged hair. Grade 4 all over! Nice to see my natural colour (30% grey).
It's very liberating go for it!

MaggieAndHopey · 26/05/2020 06:53

(a number 2 all over is the shortest I've ever gone - I wouldn't do it again though as I have a couple of scars on my scalp which gave me a slightly felonious mien)

formerbabe · 26/05/2020 07:09

Op, I have hair which sounds a similar texture to yours. If I let it dry naturally...it's as wide as my shoulders. Not nicely wavy or curly, just huge, frizzy and random kinks in it. Quite coarse too. Most people are amazed if I tell them what it's like because I style it...blow dried and straightened in one inch sections. You would never know..it looks straight and sleek. How do you style your hair? Personally, I could never have short hair...my face is far too chubby to pull that off!

ditavonteesed · 26/05/2020 07:14

I did it and I love it. I will be keeping it maybe get a bit of shape later when things open again but for now it's staying

Prancingponies · 26/05/2020 07:19

I did a number 2 all over a couple of weeks into lockdown, as I had short hair anyway (number 1 on sides at the hairdressers!) and it was starting to bug me.

So much easier. Love it.

Poetryinaction · 26/05/2020 07:20

I love your buzz cuts!

Fluffybutter · 26/05/2020 07:23

A young family member has just done this , I have to say I think it looks awful and she now has to wear woolly hats when she goes out as she gets really cold easily now .
I admire her guts though !

Daisydoesnt · 26/05/2020 07:27

Right I'm going for it today! My hair is usually in a pixie but my last cut was end of Feb. It's got so long and out of shape it's driving me bananas; all curling at the temples. My hair is naturally very thick so I've been worried about it growing out and looking like a thatch but I can't stand it any longer!!

It could easily be another month before we're back at the hairdressers, right? And that's if you can get an appointment?

I'm going to get my DH to clip it off.

Daisydoesnt · 26/05/2020 07:28

@MaggieAndHopey your hair rocks!

Sausagis it's a lovely shape and suits your hair. I also have the clippers but no guts Grin

PebbleBubbleFountain · 26/05/2020 07:37

I have had semi serious thoughts about doing this in lockdown as my hair is a frizzy mess and I am now in desperate need of my hairdresser. However, I fear it would not suit me at all and I don't have the patience to grow it out! You ladies who have posted pics look great, I'm jealous!
