To give myself a buzz cut

I am so sick of my hair! It’s very thick, wavy, dry and coarse. It needs Brazilian keratin treatment to look anything like decent. It’s currently short, kind of chin length with grown out layers and a very short fringe. At the moment it is huge, I literally look like I have a lampshade on my head!
It’s dyed dark brown as I am half grey. I’m in my 50’s and have always had quite dramatic haircuts and colours.
Shall I use my sons hair clippers on the longest setting - number 8 and cut it all off for a fresh start? I could see if I like my natural grey then dye it a new colour if I don’t. Another reason I’m toying with this idea is if I like it I can carry on doing it
myelf with the clippers as I don’t think I will be able to afford haircuts if I ever get back to earning!
Any advice or opinions welcome 😅

I would If I was brave enough and thought it would suit me. Go for it!

Can we have before and after photos?

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 25/05/2020 22:16

I would so do this if it weren’t for my DP. He doesn’t even like it if I get a fringe cut Grin

I did it once in my 20s and loved it, so easy to look after. But I did get some sympathetic looks from people who obviously thought I’d had chemo Blush. I guess doing it a bit longer might help - mine was a number 3!

nahdenmardybum · 25/05/2020 22:16

Do it!!!!! What's the worst that could happen?!

Sausagis · 25/05/2020 22:21

I have short hair and used grade 8 guard on clippers. I somehow managed to go really short on my fringe (grrr) but otherwise it's ok. A bit boyish looking, the hairdresser usually feathers the ends and makes it look more pixie-ish but I'm not walking around in a hat or anything.

MuthaClucker · 25/05/2020 22:22

Meh do it. It's only hair, what's the worst that can happen?

Mind you, I have a history of growing my hair very long, and then cutting it all off on a whim. I usually regret it instantly but I tend to like the growing it out again stage.

Having said all that, I should advise that I've just given myself a home haircut a la Meg Ryan in You've Got Mail. Which is okay, because prior to that, I'd given myself a Mickey 'out out' Flanagan 'do.

Chocrock · 25/05/2020 22:25

The worst that could happen is I would hate it - but then I would grow!
I’ve had it as short as a number 8 so many times but always cut by a hairdresser with scissors and I suppose they shape it, some parts longer and some shorter but with clippers it would be the same all over and would that look bad or too manly? I only ever hear of men cutting their hair with clippers!

You are all braver than me. I will take about half a cm off my fringe if I'm desperate Grin

nahdenmardybum · 25/05/2020 22:27

If you're ever going to do it , now is the perfect time. If it looks bad, blame it on the lockdown! I think we will all be walking around with weird and wonderful 'do's when this is all over! Grin

swampytiggaa · 25/05/2020 22:28

I did it on day 2 of lockdown 🙂 number 2 here 🙂 husband loves it as he’s always preferred my hair short although this is the shortest it’s ever been. Might go for a grade 1 next time...

Yours looks amazing swampy!

swampytiggaa · 25/05/2020 22:34

@Chocrock I’m 50 btw and previously my hair was very fine and madly curly/frizzy so looked like a poodle perm (photo for proof)

I feel so much happier now! It’s the way forward!

It definitely makes you look younger swampy!
I think I will go for it and if I’m brave enough I will post photos!

I had chemo and my hair was growing back fast just as lockdown started. It had uneven patches so I bought some clippers with a no8 comb (not many have that). I was quite happy with result. Since then I've done it again and I really like it, especially the idea of no fringe.

Fairyliz · 25/05/2020 22:41

I personally wouldn’t unless you have very petite features you might end up looking like a convict.
Do you live with anyone ? If so could you get them to cut it just a cm at a time. Dd did mine and I think she made a good job of it.

Mummyshark2019 · 25/05/2020 22:44

A friend had it done. Looks ace and very edgy. Most definitely has taken years off her age.

StirlingWork · 25/05/2020 22:45

YANBU - I think Buzz Cuts are attractive

swampytiggaa · 25/05/2020 22:48

I work in a supermarket so I see people 🙂 seen a few women recently with buzz cuts 🙂 we smile at each other like we are in a special club 😂😂

I’m never going back to hair.

Livpool · 25/05/2020 22:51

I have a tiny pinhead otherwise I would consider it to get rid of my awful roots

Sn0tnose · 25/05/2020 22:51

Swampy I think that really suits you.

OP you should definitely do it. The absolute worst thing that will happen is a couple of months of not being keen on it until it grows back.

swampytiggaa · 25/05/2020 22:54

@SnOtnose thank you 🙂 I feel really happy now it’s done... been considering it for ages. I really hated my hair before and generally wore it scraped back.

@Chocrock do it! If you hate it it will grow back. It’s only hair 🙂

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 25/05/2020 22:57

Ds1 did mine

He did a good job apart from the first sweep (2 inches by 1 inch) which we forgot to check the settings for 😀

We are having another go on thursday,

Good luck

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 25/05/2020 22:58

My hair is usually short and spikey

Now its just very short 😀

Dh does not like my hair short...but its tough tits

ShowOfHands · 25/05/2020 23:01

I cut my hair with DH's clippers on a whim. Went from boob length to v short back and sides. I loved it. So tempted to do it again.

This is it the next day!
