Do you think your list of excuses and deflection would work for anyone else ignoring govt and police advice and committing driving offences?

The press appear to have given us numerous incorrect facts - what are their excuses?

The 'driving offence' was mentioned on the radio last night - it was pointed out that DC's wife was worried about his eyesight but not necessarily DC himself. It's only an offence if he didn't meet the minimum ‘standards of vision for driving’. He didn't have an accident - he wasn't stopped by the police - how do you prove he didn't meet the minimum standards? Drivers who suffer from regular migraines are permitted to drive - they only have to notify the DVLA if their migraine attacks are likely to be a source of danger to the public - just looked that up.

I understood that the trip to Barnard Castle was on the 12th, and they drove home on the 13th.

chomalungma · 26/05/2020 10:30

Actually - I misread his statement. He said he returned 'home'. He meant he returned back to Durham

chomalungma · 26/05/2020 10:32

nderstood that the trip to Barnard Castle was on the 12th, and they drove home on the 13th

I misread his statement. So it really wasn't a detour. Because a detour is somewhere you go to that is a bit out of your way but you carry on your journey.

Ulver · 26/05/2020 10:32

Police have issued a statement that driving to test your eyesight is an offence.
There are legitimate ways to test your eyesight and overall health BEFORE getting in a car with a 4 yr old.

LaurieMarlow · 26/05/2020 10:32

All those 'highly intelligent', highly educated people couldn't think of anything better than that! After all those hours of work on that pitiful story!

That’s the thing that surprises me the most.

It’s the most hokey pile of shit I’ve ever heard. My mind is blown that that’s the best they could do.

luckylavender · 26/05/2020 10:33

@Hadenoughfornow - you think this is bullying? You remember what he did to Sonia Khan?

chomalungma · 26/05/2020 10:33

I wonder how much of this the Attorney General knew before she tweeted her support?

LaurieMarlow · 26/05/2020 10:34

Grin

You wouldn’t think they’d have to, but go Dom!

Ulver · 26/05/2020 10:34

So now the line is that the media got it wrong. While also saying Cummings statement confirmed everything in the original Guardian article.
🙄🙄🙄

derxa · 26/05/2020 10:34

Douglas Ross 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 Quite brave of him but the Tories aren't popular up here. Lack of self interest hmmm

itsgettingweird · 26/05/2020 10:36

Clav (or should I say Mary Wink). Yes, Dvla clearly says if you drive without meeting the eyesight requirements you could be prosecuted.

But what, supposedly intelligent person who is the senior advisor to the PM drives just hoping they meet the standards, won't have an accident and avoid prosecution.

Not someone with the integrity we are meant believe he acted with.

Integral people don't potentially break the law to see if they can't away with it and potentially put the lives of their wife and child and mementos if the British public they serve at risk.

Clavinova · 26/05/2020 10:37

Taking a drive for exercise was a minor indiscretion.Something others have been fined for and that people asked the police investigate and treat him the same if he had indeed broken the rules.

The trouble here is inconsistency all across the country. Some police forces have been very lenient, especially end of March (Stephen Kinnock was photographed visiting his dad in Wales on his dad's birthday 28th March - the same day DC drove to Durham) - other police forces have been very heavy handed indeed.

Peregrina · 26/05/2020 10:39

The sensible thing to have done would have been to offer his resignation straight away and then he could have been brought back in a month. Now the stench around him is getting worse and worse, and it will damage Johnson. Not that Cummings will be bothered - Govey takes his place and Cummings is home and dry.

Oh wait, maybe that's his plan?

Clavinova · 26/05/2020 10:40

But what, supposedly intelligent person who is the senior advisor to the PM drives just hoping they meet the standards, won't have an accident and avoid prosecution.

He obviously thought he did meet the requirements - he says his wife was worried.

chomalungma · 26/05/2020 10:42

clav

Do you:

a) Think that driving on a 50 mile round trip on Easter Sunday on your wife's birthday to test your are safe to drive is sensible?

b) Going to a different place and then using local NHS resources, when your family has been exposed to Covid 19, is sensible?

Peregrina · 26/05/2020 10:44

Nice try Clavinona - is it only Labour politicians you want to see fined?
How about Nigel Farage - he got a ticking off from the Kent Police - should he have been fined, or is a UKIP/BrexitParty politician OK?

solieltoday · 26/05/2020 10:45

The govt cannot take a risk with public cooperation and trust at a time like this.

I find it unbelievable that they would put the career of this unelected man ahead of the trust of the nation - many of whom even voted Conservative!

This whole nonsense about needing to drive to Barnard Castle (or anywhere) to test your eyesight is extraordinary and such an insult to public intelligence.

The sad fact is, they do genuinely believe the public are stupid enough to fall for anything because of the way they were manipulated during the Brexit campaign.

You can imagine BJ and DC sitting there on Sunday... “Right Dom, you get out there and be “relatable” with the whole poor me beleaguered father routine. They’ll fall for that. Make sure you capitalise on the last few days’ press harassment outside your home. Then, straight after, I’ll get out and announce shops will reopen. Yay! Yes we’ll shut the plebs up by giving them something to rejoice and look forward to and Tuesday’s press will be all about shopping!”

Er no..,.

itsgettingweird · 26/05/2020 10:46

Great. So now we've also highlighted an inequality in our supposed justice system.
If he had been deemed not to be making an essential journey he should have also been fined. I've never defended what he did or his reasons.
But he doesn't run our country and didn't make the rule to stay at home.
There is no integrity (the line they are using as defence) in breaking rules you created.
The same as there's no integrity in anyone breaking them.

thisenglishlife · 26/05/2020 10:46

Stephen Kinnock was photographed visiting his dad in Wales on his dad's birthday 28th March Did he have corona? Did he stay there?

chomalungma · 26/05/2020 10:48

"Look, its great you're asking legitimate questions, but here's a big shiny egg to look at"

itsgettingweird · 26/05/2020 10:50

Clav so he thought he did meet the requirements. He thought he was safe to drive. So instead of driving, home, like he thought he should he allowed his wife to convince him to drive to Barnard Castle just to be sure. And he's meant to be making decisions for the rest of the country. He couldn't even decide if he was or wasn't safe to drive.

chomalungma · 26/05/2020 10:53

So instead of driving, home, like he thought he should he allowed his wife to convince him to drive to Barnard Castle just to be sure

That would have been a great AIBU - from either perspective.

DH has been ill for 2 weeks with Covid 19. He needs to return to London. It's a long drive and we have a 4 year old son. I don't think he is capable of driving but he does. AIBU to suggest he does a test drive first..

Then drip feed details

YouTheCat · 26/05/2020 10:55

He was photographed at a good distance in his dad's garden. Still wrong though but he didn't have the virus.

Clavinova · 26/05/2020 10:55

Police have issued a statement that driving to test your eyesight is an offence.

Do you have a link to the statement?
Certainly unwise...

"Senior police officers last night warned of the dangers of driving with impaired vision"...

"roads policing officers said it was not wise to get into your car if you feared your vision was impaired."

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2020/05/25/police-warn-motorists-driving-impaired-vision-dominic-cummings/

Former chief constable here but not official police statement;

"Dominic Cummings may have broken the Highway Code by driving to Barnard Castle to test his vision, a senior ex-police officer has said."
