@derxa

Do you also think all the people in rural areas who have asked people from cities not to come to their second homes to avoid burdening the hospitals are operating out of ‘jealousy and spite’?

Well I'm a farmer in a rural area and we work out in the fresh air. Isolation is absolutely possible. He's not in a very high risk age group and looks slim. He wasn't burdening local hospitals. And he didn't.

Your answer makes no sense. If people get sick, they need the hospital, as proven by the fact that his son was taken to hospital by ambulance, thus burdening the hospital.

I need a stiff lemonade

SophieB100 · 25/05/2020 17:39

I'm up next: Sophie from Mumsnet: "Why didn't the niece/s who were prepared to take a risk travel to you? Then you could have not worried about travelling back to work?

Were these going to be offered to the niece? Maybe he has a close knit loving family? His family were a target in his London house. You've watched the footage. Other families may have muddled through in London but they didn't have the press and other sharks watching their every move.

Other families also couldn't have accessed police security in quite the same way.

Though he played it quite well Smile

LockdownLucie · 25/05/2020 17:43

Can his wife not drive?

Could they not have worked remotely?

I fail to believe he could go from being unable to work one night to driving to the hospital to collect his wife and son the following day.

He has had the audacity to
admit he hasn’t offered to resign and hasn’t even contemplated this idea.

He took off to Durham thinking they could hide away in a fairly quiet part of the world, have a break and could do so without courting any publicity.

Ulver · 25/05/2020 17:43

He treats the public and public service and health workers with contempt. He’s undermined the efforts of people on the frontline and endangered them.
He’s infuriated the police, nurses and doctors who can die because people flout lockdown and spread the virus.
Everyone will have done bullshit story as to why they are driving to the country/ beach breaking lockdown now.

So DC is actually advising, that it is ok for the ordinary man in the street to do exactly the same in a similar situation.
That's what it sounds like.

Bertoldbrecht · 25/05/2020 17:45

Typical spin from tory mps congratulating his honesty. This will be forgotten in a few days and business as usual, lapped up by half the country. Wish someone had asked him about the fast looming likelihood of a no deal brexit (that he is no doubt engineering) which will do even more damage to the economy.

snowqu33n · 25/05/2020 17:45

I don’t understand why one of the nieces couldn’t have just been on standby to come up to London in the “exceptional circumstances” of them both being too ill to parent. If the nieces live rurally it’s unlikely neither of them drive.
Would have saved him driving while ill and spared his sick wife and kid the journey and disruption.
They never got to the point of needing that anyway.

They returned to London despite being afraid to stay at the house and they are living there now.

Did he though?

PotholeParadise · 25/05/2020 17:46

People were not hanging around his house at the end of March. If they had been watching him his every move, this would have come out far sooner. It would have been very noticeable that the Cummings family decamped from London with a carload of stuff for themselves and a child, came back and left again.

People are camping outside his house now.

derxa · 25/05/2020 17:46

Wondering how is house in London is suddenly secure to be in... It's not. It must be a living hell.

teach1066 · 25/05/2020 17:48

Driving to Barnard Castle to test his eyesight??? Er?? With his child and wife?? 30 miles for a test and then back to Durham?? So odd.

SophieB100 · 25/05/2020 17:48

"I told the PM the following week but neither of us can recall the conversation as we were both ill. The PM was in bed"
"I'm 95% sure that I stopped to refuel on the way back"
"I drove for half an hour to test my eyesight"
"I didn't want to bother the PM as we both had a lot on our plates, it was midnight and he had just tested positive"

What a crock of shite.

If the nieces live rurally it’s unlikely neither of them drive. You want a 17 year old to drive down to London on her own? Honestly?

SharonasCorona · 25/05/2020 17:49

I wonder if he’s vague about the petrol stop on the way back because it wasn’t him doing the driving?

PotholeParadise · 25/05/2020 17:49

I am sure it is a hell. Now. I expressed my concern for his child elsewhere on MN this morning.

But people weren't doing that at the end of March. If they had been, the absence of his car would have been reported sooner.
