Hairy armpits - liberating or gross?

SausageCrush · 23/05/2020 10:09

As I'm unable to go swimming at the moment I haven't bothered/been able to keep up with many of my usual beauty/maintenance routines.

For the first time in my life I now sport long underarm hair and am quite fascinated by it! It's very unfashionable in England, but I like it. What are your experiences..?

I'm tempted to keep it and wondering wha

Liberating. Genuinely, for me, it was a huge relief to realise that the world would not fall down if I had armpit hair and OTHER PEOPLE COULD SEE IT. It's just... hair. And we all have it.

I don't shave anywhere, ever. I used to but hated it, hated the feeling, hated feeling like I had to do it, hated feeling self conscious if I hadn't, hated the inevitable skin irritation it gave me etc. When I was about 30 weeks pregnant with my last child I was twisting this way and that trying to reach my legs to shave and just thought "why am I doing this? Who's benefit is this for?" and the answer was "not mine" so I said fuck it, no more. I haven't shaved anywhere in 2 years now and I couldn't give a single solitary shit what anybody else thinks about it. It isn't gross, it's just hair, and it doesn't smell if you wash a normal amount and use deodorant.

Deadringer · 23/05/2020 16:56

I don't bother shaving under my arms, i am fair and not terribly hairy so its not much of an issue, i never wear sleeveless tops so no one sees it anyway. I don't really like seeing hairy armpits on other people though, male or female, no idea why.

Ritascornershop · 23/05/2020 16:58

I don’t have underarm hair, I don’t mind if other people do but if I did I think I’d shave. As I’ve never had it it just seems peculiar to me.

Liberating

AnnaNimmity · 23/05/2020 17:15

It's just hair. It doesn't smell if you shower regularly. And in fact I quite like a slightly sweaty armpit (mostly on my boyfriend, but have no issue with mine either).

It's just hair. I'm taking a relaxed approach to all of my hair at the moment.

Mary46 · 23/05/2020 17:44

Find it more hygienic shaven. Same with bikini area. My hair dark so am conscious of it.!

puffinandkoala · 23/05/2020 17:44

Wouldn't stop me swimming if I hadn't though

Same here. I haven't shaved my legs for a few days but would still wear shorts to go running (anyway at the moment I figure people should not be getting close enough to notice!)

SerenDippitty · 23/05/2020 17:55

I haven't bothered since lockdown. It hasn't grown that much - one of the advantages of getting older - but it makes me sore when I shave. I'd rather have a bit of hair there than a rash, quite frankly.

Bluebooby · 23/05/2020 17:56

I don't find it gross or liberating. I shave mine occasionally, more often than not, I don't.

dudsville · 23/05/2020 17:58

This has been one of my lockdown pleasures. I stopped shaving after about a week. My underarms had developed sensitivity for the last several months and I realised i could have a break. What bliss! The hair is soft and short, and I'm mostly white/grey now so it isn't prominent. I'm exercising daily and find a shower is still sufficient, just as it was before, and i don't put on deodorant before bed and wake up fresh (oh has been nominated as the one who must tell me if I'm whiffy!). The skin on my underarm looks sho calm and healthy now. I won't be shaving underarms ever again! Unlike my legs which I'm much more comfortable with having shaved them - i love the feeling of being in bed with freshly shaved legs!

Body hair is body hair, do what you like with it.

Lambside · 23/05/2020 17:59

Men all over the world are asking this question.

Not

MarioPuzo · 23/05/2020 18:03

When I was a callow youth I used to think underarm hair was disgusting, but now I quite like it. It's cute, makes me feel like i have a little mouse living there.

Unfortunately social conditioning is strong so generally if my underarms are going to be on display I have them waxed or epilate them.

I wish underarm hair management really was a genuine choice that women could make; the social stigma is so great that it means the majority of women toe the 'bald pit' line, even if it's not their preference.

NoHardSell · 23/05/2020 18:14

Men should be. It's my new deal breaker for any new man I think. Especially pubes. Bleurgh

Redleathertrousers · 23/05/2020 18:16

I could never stop shaving my armpits or legs. It's social conditioning for sure. To me, mega hairy armpits on both men and women are very unpleasant. I find hairy legs on women also unpleasant. But its all about your own choices about your body and I can see how it would be liberating to just think fuck it.

JoanOfCentreParc · 23/05/2020 18:22

I'm rather fond of my furry pits. They feel sore and bare if I shave them and they've never once smelled nasty. DH loves them too. I do like my legs smooth however.

Bluewater1 · 23/05/2020 18:23

Your body your choice

thenightsky · 23/05/2020 18:24

I always feel as though my antiperspirant doesn't seem as effective if I have hairy pits. I epilate once every week to 10 days. Legs I leave in winter and do at same time as pits in summer.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 23/05/2020 18:42

I don't shave my pits or my legs very often, though I do occasionally if I feel like it. Ultimately I'm too lazy! I have pretty sparse body hair, though - I might feel differently if it was dark, wiry and bushy.

Each to their own, I say...

kateybeth79 · 23/05/2020 22:58

Personally I think it's gross! I don't like hairy armpits on men either though. Or hairy chests......or hairy backs........ but I digress 😂

ViciousJackdaw · 23/05/2020 23:22

I feel cleaner with a shaved pit but that's probably psychological. I never think others are gross though, I don't mind if yours are hairy or not, just as long as they are washed!

peperethecat · 23/05/2020 23:24

If I see someone else proudly sporting hairy armpits (especially if they generally look well groomed) I think kudos to you.

I don't personally like the way it feels though. I can't go more than a couple of days without shaving mine.

pumpkinbump · 23/05/2020 23:30

I haven't shaved my armpits for about 2 months. I'm lucky because they don't really grow. But if they did, then they would have to go. I don't think it looks nice at all, imagine having a nice sleeveless top or dress on and having a load of bush poking out from under your arm!

Rosebel · 23/05/2020 23:30

I shave my underarms about once a week as I don't like the look or feel of it. Legs I don't usually bother in the winter and haven't done them this year as it feels pointless. Don't care what others do with their body hair though.

evilharpy · 23/05/2020 23:44

I can't stand the look or feel of my legs or pits being hairy. Pits get shaved every day in the shower - takes seconds. Legs get epilated about once a week. Legs get very itchy if allowed to get too hairy.

I wouldn't bat an eyelid at anyone else's fur, I just don't like it growing on me.
