to think Dominic Cummings has to go?

Dominic Cummings apparently travelled to his parents house while meant to be self isolating due to covid symptoms.

Given what happened with Neil Ferguson and Catherine Calderwood, AIBU to think his position ought to be untenable?

I just sent this email to my local MP:

I’m contacting you as my local MP. I am appalled by the actions of Dominic Cummings and even more appalled by the way the Cabinet has obviously been instructed to rally round him. It is shocking to me that our elected politicians are defending this aide who has quite clearly broken the rules of the lockdown set up to protect everyone.

This fundamentally undermines the integrity of the Conservative party and the message that we are all in this together and all making sacrifices to keep each other safe.

Are you prepared to state publicly that what you think he did was wrong? If not, will you be issuing new guidance locally to say that we can all travel to relatives however far away while we, or a member of our household, has Covid19?

Thank you for your time.

Andrew Marr pushing shapps

Hingeandbracket · 24/05/2020 09:59

Thought about emailing my MP but he will say whatever Boris.wants him to say. He is invisible between election campaigns and I dont have any faith in him at all
You mean he will say whatever Dominic Cunt tells him to say.

RoosterPie · 24/05/2020 10:02

@Piglet89 that’s not an exhaustive list though. Reasonable excuses “include” those examples but it isn’t limited to them.

People can argue about if it was against the law but it was certainly against the guidance.

Why have they put this Shapps out to deal with the fallout? He’s not doing a very good job of it. Talking about squirming. Absolute shambles.

NoMoreReluctantCustodians · 24/05/2020 10:06

To be fair I think the finest debater would struggle to defend this

RoosterPie · 24/05/2020 10:07

Yeah Grant Schapps can only do what he can do with the indefensible. I don’t think he’s particularly impressive but it’s an impossible brief.

I think he was already booked to go on these programmes for other transport related reasons.

He must be cursing that. He looks so uncomfortable and is being ripped apart

JacobReesMogadishu · 24/05/2020 10:09

My bike is booked in for a service mid June so hopefully they know about these vouchers and I get some money off!

1forsorrow · 24/05/2020 10:09

Grant Shapps must be angry, he is being made to look like a total fool.

C130 · 24/05/2020 10:11

So the Government are still backing DC. A big FU to us all then.

MarshaBradyo · 24/05/2020 10:12

I haven’t watched / heard him but yep I bet he’s kicking himself for being the mug booked today. Having to toe the line, where it’s pretty impossible.

SheWranglesRugRats · 24/05/2020 10:13

They've nicked the bike voucher idea from France. Here you can book a slot online with registered bike shops to have your bike overhauled for fifty euros.

Alsohuman · 24/05/2020 10:14

I feel almost sorry for Shapps, what a weekend to be the go to minister.

derxa · 24/05/2020 10:15

an extra lane on the A66 This is very important for me. I go on it all the time

C130 · 24/05/2020 10:18

Where is Boris? I feel that there is no real leadership at the moment.

FliesandPies · 24/05/2020 10:19

I don't feel sorry for Shapps, he seems like one of those weird types who don't really feel emotions like shame/humiliation in the normal way. No conscience I suppose?

FliesandPies · 24/05/2020 10:21

There is no leadership with Boris. He is literally a plate of jelly, wobbling in a fridge somewhere, frit out of his wits. Without Cummings he is nothing.

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 24/05/2020 10:22

Well we are all a bit bored on lockdown and in need of entertainment.. massively enjoying watching Shapps squirm, what did he do to be the fall guy this weekend?

ypestis · 24/05/2020 10:23

a lot of people have broken lock down rules, I bet you most of the people on this thread have but won't admit it on here. It’s not so much

The biggest issue isn’t that he’s broken the rules, it’s that he is being protected and making out that he acted within the rules.

And this will create a new rule which says it’s fine to leave your house when you have COVID symptoms and travel 300 miles to another part of the country. Unless the government condemn it, this new rule will now apply to everyone.

BiggerBoat1 · 24/05/2020 10:26

I bet Boris is hoping Grant Shapps doesn't get him in the secret santa this year.

Poor bloke has been properly stitched up having to be the public face for this shitshow.

Piglet89 · 24/05/2020 10:28

@RoosterPie statutory interpretation and reasonable extrapolation of the named reasonable excuses tells you that what he did wasn’t reasonable.

And I haven’t even started on the rules around self-isolation if someone in the household displays symptoms.

MarshaBradyo · 24/05/2020 10:28

He must really want to say ask bloody Cummings.

Having to defend an aide who won’t have to do it, but everyone else will.

bitofafunnyquestion · 24/05/2020 10:32

FliesandPies I dont know about that generally, but in this case I reckon he's more worried about keeping his job hence splitting hairs and refusing to answer the bigger questions throughout Marr's grilling.

Just watching Politics England, good on Sarah Jones for speaking up. Bit disappointing that Caroline Johnson is just mechanistically toeing the line after her video imploring people to stay at home. Suppose that was just doing what she was told as well.

RoosterPie · 24/05/2020 10:32

@Piglet89 I agree it wasn’t reasonable - hence me starting the thread!

But I’m just saying that the mere fact it doesn’t fall within one of the named reasonable excuses isn’t the end of the matter. “Reasonable” is a value judgment when it comes to legal issues, that’s all I meant. I’m not defending DC at all.
