to think Dominic Cummings has to go?

RoosterPie · 22/05/2020 20:39

Dominic Cummings apparently travelled to his parents house while meant to be self isolating due to covid symptoms.

Given what happened with Neil Ferguson and Catherine Calderwood, AIBU to think his position ought to be untenable?

(Sacking DC) would mean removal of his Downing Street access and his authority over other civil servants

Actually yes, that's a good point. I've no doubt he could still access Boris, but certainly civil servants would be glad to hear less of him

That said, to the average civil servant they're all probably much of a muchness; get rid of DC and another one like him will be along only too soon

Clavinova · 24/05/2020 16:37

Falls down somewhat as Cummings could drive to Durham, so was clearly also able to look after a child OR he was unfit to drive, either way highly irresponsible

The other exception at the time was travelling for work - he clearly needed childcare to work in such a high profile role and his wife was ill - but then he became ill himself and couldn't work. If he has made subsequent trips (and now confessed to BJ) then I think he will go.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 24/05/2020 16:38

Surely people aren't going to have any patience with wasting time and money on a public enquiry during a pandemic?

Even better ... they could delay a (meaningless) enquiry until it's all over, in the hope everyone will have forgotten DC's shenanigans

PotholeParadise · 24/05/2020 16:40

Cummings and his wife never became so ill they couldn't take care of their child, either by her account in the Spectator immediately after, or by his account this week.

Nothing Dr Harries said authorises re-situating yourself while ill at the other end of the country in case you become too ill to take care of a child. If everyone who had coronavirus symptoms and a child had moved to a second home or an AirBnB in a more convenient location, what would our lockdown have looked like?

FliesandPies · 24/05/2020 16:40

You can't justify a public enquiry over one person's actions - either you tell the public you support that person or you ask for their resignation.

SharonasCorona · 24/05/2020 16:41

OP @RoosterPie would it be worth you starting a new thread and linking it here ahead of 5pm? Thanks

BoingBoingyBoing · 24/05/2020 16:42

If he doesn't go the whole thing is over. The continued compliance of the public for the lockdown relies on mutual trust and a willingness to do the right thing. If it turns out that goblin-featured advisors can break the rules without consequences then that veneer is just gone, the police's authority to enforce is gone and the r rate will go through the roof.

Boris and co don't give a flying fuck about that though, and so I don't think there is a chance in hello he'll get pushed.

SophieB100 · 24/05/2020 16:43

I don't mind starting a new thread, but I don't want to step on OP's toes!

SharonasCorona · 24/05/2020 16:43

Shapps saying ‘perfectly legitimate to ask questions’ but if they / Downing Street meant it they would not have released the statement saying they would not waste time doing so.

FliesandPies · 24/05/2020 16:43

The other exception at the time was travelling for work - he clearly needed childcare to work in such a high profile role and his wife was ill

But he has stated that they didn't require childcare at the time and intended to isolate away from his parents? He clearly he wasn't 'travelling for work' in any sense that the regulations meant, that is just trying to stretch a definition beyond credibility.

SharonasCorona · 24/05/2020 16:44

@Sophie I think that would be fine!

Alsohuman · 24/05/2020 16:45

I emailed my MP this morning. Has anyone else done it?

HeIenaDove · 24/05/2020 16:46

YY @merrymouse The gaslighting of the whole country is off the scale.

TiddlestheCat · 24/05/2020 16:47

@Fallsballs

He’s like Japanese Knotweed

Am laughing. Absolutely spot on. Although Japanese knotweed is easier to get rid of!

The80sweregreat · 24/05/2020 16:48

I emailed my MP. I don't often email him.
Not had a reply.

HeIenaDove · 24/05/2020 16:51

Someone on BBC News talking about the fuss dying down as things move on. People have died alone. Family members have missed funerals. Because of the limits on who can attend

Shortsally · 24/05/2020 16:51

Jas however does it '' fall down because some one was able to drive to Durham?

The disease is progressive?!

It developes.

Years ago both dh and I came down with something vicious... My goodness had we had any help we would have got it. However.. We didn't know how bad it was going to get.

D and v severe migraine... Etc.
With covid we know it can get nasty.

WithTheTide · 24/05/2020 16:53

I’ve emailed my MP highlighting double standards, loss of trust and credibility. I also queried his membership of SAGE and asked that there is full disclosure of the scientific advice. Stopped before a full on rant developed and had a cup of tea and a kit-kat. Looking forward to the briefing at 1700.

itsgettingweird · 24/05/2020 16:56

Yes clav if you are unable for care to care for the child it's exceptional.

A) the rules allowed someone to visit your home to provide necessary care - not to drive 250 miles with Covid to seek it and

B) they were able to care for the child. Both at the time as he was well enough to drive 250 miles and also throughout as Mary Wakefield herself posted.

itsgettingweird · 24/05/2020 17:01

And yes clav other reason was to work.

But the day after they confirmed he was isolating he travelled to Durham. He didn't travel to work anyway. He himself has said he travelled because he loves his child and his sister and nieces offered help.

Don't try and give him an alibi he hasn't even tried to use himself

Clavinova · 24/05/2020 17:03

the rules allowed someone to visit your home to provide necessary care

I don't think the guidance was specific - happy for you to quote the wording from March.

Figmentofmyimagination · 24/05/2020 17:04

Outrageous press conference appearance from Johnson. Disgrace. The pair of them.

MarshaBradyo · 24/05/2020 17:05

Off the hook. The PM backing him. What a pair.
