to think Dominic Cummings has to go?

RoosterPie · 22/05/2020 20:39

Dominic Cummings apparently travelled to his parents house while meant to be self isolating due to covid symptoms.

Given what happened with Neil Ferguson and Catherine Calderwood, AIBU to think his position ought to be untenable?

Someone out there could make a lot of money if they find they've got Cummings in the background of one of their photos from Barnard Castle/motorway services/Tescos in Durham..

AnneKipanki · 24/05/2020 10:33

That would be great @ypestis. My lonely, depressed, and heartbroken niece would love to come home.
However she has been told she can’t because of the “rules” .
She is in London, working from home and wants to do that at Mum’s house in Scotland.

AnneKipanki · 24/05/2020 10:33

She is not ill either!

FliesandPies · 24/05/2020 10:35

In that case she is already allowed to do that under the rules AnneKipanki Smile

AnneKipanki · 24/05/2020 10:37

Bye for now , got a technology lesson.

AnneKipanki · 24/05/2020 10:38

Brilliant @FliesandPies

hablar · 24/05/2020 10:38

Exactly as pp said, they are relying on the fact that their supporters are dim enough to let’s this wash over - “Oh they won’t remember the mantra about staying HOME for 14 DAYS if a member of your household has symptoms. Nooo.... let’s just obfuscate the message now with some vague waffle about ‘common sense’ and make sure Cummings gets filmed loading a kids bike and ball into his Land Rover so ‘ the people’ can see he’s just a dad, like us, trying to do his best....”

MaybeNew · 24/05/2020 10:38

No fan of Dominic Cummings but this is ridiculous. In my office alone, there are 5 families who went to stay with one of the parents. They all drove at least a good couple of hours out of London. If I had had somewhere to go, I would have done the same. Almost 60% of the single adults went back to their parents. I have a colleague staying with me who lost her mother in January and was frightened of being alone. She arrived after a week of lockdown. People did what was best for their mental health and I don’t blame them.

Piglet89 · 24/05/2020 10:41

@RoosterPie I spent quite a bit of time looking at the concept of “reasonableness” in statute and case law while studying for my law degree and also considering its significance in my subsequent practice as a regulatory lawyer, so I don’t need a lecture about the legal status of that word, thanks.

itsgettingweird · 24/05/2020 10:44

Derxa sorry if it can across I didn't think it was important. It was a representative statement on the situation.

janet1267 · 24/05/2020 10:46

Maybenew Did they have the virus at the time? That's, in my view, the unforgivable factor in DC's case.

hablar · 24/05/2020 10:47

It made me cringe that the govt haven’t even bothered to give Shapps a stock answer to the question, “How many times did DC and family stop on the motorway? Would this be considered an infection risk - yes or no?” All he could do was try and bumble through, “Well er, I couldn’t possibly say, I don’t er, know the specific details... errrr ....”

As if the govt wouldn’t have asked DC that, at the very least. It’s embarrassing to watch.

Whilst they had COVID symptoms?

So the rule is it’s ok to travel long distances from your home whilst you are symptomatic with COVID? Stopping for petrol en route? Or only if you can make it in one go? What if you break down or have an accident? It’s such a self centred decision. And he is setting an example for everybody else.

SharonasCorona · 24/05/2020 10:48

Mr Baker, MP for Wycombe, told Sky's Sophy Ridge programme on Sunday morning that Mr Cummings "holds in contempt any effort to hold him accountable to others" and that "no one is indispensable".

’With the damage Mr Cummings is doing to the Government’s reputation he must consider his position. Lockdown has had its challenges for everyone. It’s his cavalier “I don’t care; I’m cleverer than you” tone that infuriates people. He is now wounding the PM/Govt & I don’t like that’

Some damning statements by Tory MPs. www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.standard.co.uk/news/uk/steve-baker-boris-johnson-must-sack-dominic-cummings-lockdown-a4449536.html%3famp

AnneKipanki · 24/05/2020 10:48

I am sure the advice in Scotland is still essential travel only.

Did they travel with someone who had Covid 19 symptoms?

FliesandPies · 24/05/2020 10:52

This is the crux of it that a lot of pp - those for and against Cummings - keep missing out.

Just heard a bloke on the radio ranting about Stephen Kinnock and 'lefty media witchhunt'. There was no suggestion that Kinnock had CV or suspected he had, and he wasn't going over to stay with his parents - talked to them from the bottom of the garden (no dancing, no Abba).

He was plastered all over the media and visited by the Police for that.

Janus · 24/05/2020 10:54

MaybeNew My daughter left uni just before lockdown and came hone to live with us. This is in NO way similar to being in lockdown with a wife showing symptoms and your very close colleagues being confirmed as having Covid-19 and going on a 260 road trip. It is not the same to choose where to spend lockdown and get there to then travelling around the country with Covid-19 to get somewhere you’d prefer to be ill.

FliesandPies · 24/05/2020 10:54

Sorry AnneKi, not sure about Scotland! Be a good idea to check though - there might well be some provision for a person to move when their health (mental or otherwise) is at risk.

SharonasCorona · 24/05/2020 10:54

Yes, and some on Twitter calling Steve Baker a traitor and saying Boris and Cummings won’t let him run for MP in YB the next election.

knittingaddict · 24/05/2020 10:56

I am sure the advice in Scotland is still essential travel only.

I'm fairly sure travelling to get support from family would be considered essential. Have all the parties been social distancing? The government have allowed for mental health issues in their statements, although I'm not sure what Scotland has said about that.

Our daughter and grandchildren came to stay with us for just over a week. She only went back when her children went back to school a couple of weeks ago. We all live in the same area (5 minutes drive apart) and all been strictly social distancing and no one was working outside the home.

midnightstar66 · 24/05/2020 10:59

Yes it's still essential travel only here in Scotland and no where does it state you can travel to seek care - only to provide it! But certainly not if you or a family member is displaying syptoms. Then you stay in your house! The buzz line here is still stay home!

SheWranglesRugRats · 24/05/2020 11:02

It absolutely beggars belief that someone of his wealth and social position could not have accessed help in London. Absolute shower of shite across the board.

NoMoreReluctantCustodians · 24/05/2020 11:04

I bet Boris is hoping Grant Shapps doesn't get him in the secret santa this year
