to think Dominic Cummings has to go?

RoosterPie · 22/05/2020 20:39

Dominic Cummings apparently travelled to his parents house while meant to be self isolating due to covid symptoms.

Given what happened with Neil Ferguson and Catherine Calderwood, AIBU to think his position ought to be untenable?

@OceanOrchid Completely agree.
Undermining public health messages during a pandemic is dangerous.
And the lack of prime ministerial and cabinet leadership on this is staggering. At least Catherine Calderwood stood up in the press conference herself, as did Nicola Sturgeon, and addressed the issue directly when it happened.

Intothesun · 23/05/2020 18:56

That argument would work surely if his sister had travelled from Durham to London to care for the child

Not really, dependent on the sisters own caring commitments. Which means she would potentially have to leave her own family which may not have been possible, or take them with her, putting even more people at certain risk. DC moving his own family and isolating with outside support is safer then her coming to him and making the risk of her getting covid pretty much a certainty, rather than a possibility.

The80sweregreat · 23/05/2020 18:56

He went to see his mum for her birthday because he felt off colour and his wife was ill.
The rules went out the window for him : temporary memory loss of the rules he drew up maybe?! It was only a few weeks since he'd help make them up.
You couldn't make this up really could you?

mbosnz · 23/05/2020 18:58

I do think it interesting (and sad) that neither Cummings and goings nor Bozo have had the bravery, nor the respect for the voting public (you know, the plebs that gave this bunch of fucking incompetents the mandate to govern) to front up about this.

Says a lot about what level of respect or level of answerability they feel they have.

DioneTheDiabolist · 23/05/2020 18:59

Intothesun, he and his sick wife were not travelling to provide care, they were travelling to access it.

Intothesun · 23/05/2020 18:59

He went to see his mum for her birthday because he felt off colour and his wife was ill.

Are you saying neither of them had covid then? Where did you read that?

Maestro7 · 23/05/2020 19:01

I think his response has been shocking. His contempt for the public in saying it’s irrelevant and he did nothing wrong when he blatantly did. Sure we all would’ve loved to go home and get minded by our family when Ill. Plus god knows who they infected stopping at petrol stations etc on the way. His attitude is disgusting.

The80sweregreat · 23/05/2020 19:02

Boris must be sick of hiding.
By Jove , this being PM is such hard work isn't it? I have to find new hiding places nearly every week ( sticks head out the cupboard , is it safe yet? Had Shapps seen them off for me!?)
His a joke

bilabongg · 23/05/2020 19:05

Just heard him answering back to the press, he's so arrogant 🤮

The80sweregreat · 23/05/2020 19:05

I was being sarcastic about him being off colour etc! He did what he did and broke the rules. He is being defended for it and that makes me angry.

Truthpact · 23/05/2020 19:06

Sturgeon can't really get involved in this when just yesterday, she said that there is no mile limit on how far we in scotland can travel to see family from next week. She even gave the example of that she wouldn't stop you travelling to see your parents in Inverness if you live in Glasgow, but that you should use common sense in these cases and not go if you are going to put family at risk. Considering common sense seems to have gone out of the window these days, I doubt many people will think about the consequences of their journeys.

But Cummings still shouldn't have done it. Especially when ill. He represents the government, he needs to follow the guidelines to the letter and set an example, even doing less than what the guidelines allow really. But he won't be kicked out either, we are stuck with him and the rest of the twits.

mynamesmrdiggety · 23/05/2020 19:06

What @merrymouse said

The80sweregreat · 23/05/2020 19:10

His response earlier to the press showed him in a terrible light. Arrogant and unashamed. He did this at the start of the pandemic too when we were told to stay at home and the guidelines were much stricter.

lyralalala · 23/05/2020 19:13

Healthy people travelling door-to-door with toilet stops to care for a child would not put more people at risk than unwell people travelling door-to-door with toilet stops. If he needed childcare then law allowed for someone to come and give that care, or could have taken the child to them.

It's utter nonsense of him to suggest that he needed outside support like the shopping his sister brought. Not only is he wealthy, but he's part of the government. There's no way he needed someone in Durham to go to the supermarket for him because he couldn't get a delivery slot.

MarieQueenofScots · 23/05/2020 19:14

DC moving his own family and isolating with outside support is safer then her coming to him and making the risk of her getting covid pretty much a certainty, rather than a possibility

Not safer for the people he potentially came into contact with, hence the very clear guidelines on how to behave if one/both/all members of the household have symptoms. Maybe he didn’t get the letter and helpful diagram that were sent to everyone.....?

lyralalala · 23/05/2020 19:14

That you can do a long journey in Scotland next week is utterly irrelevant. You can do a long journey in England now, that's also irrelevant.

You couldn't when he did it. You can't do that journey in England now, or in Scotland next week, if you have symptoms. That's the only relevant points.

Intothesun · 23/05/2020 19:15

Except that under section 6, restrictions on movement, he didn't break the rules.

Thecazelets · 23/05/2020 19:15

Of course he should go, but he has that Trumpian lack of shame which means he won't even admit there's a problem. Cabinet members were all tweeting very similar supportive messages saying what a good dad he is, so they've clearly all been told what to say. He won't be going. Very much hope I'm wrong, but I don't think so.

ListeningQuietly · 23/05/2020 19:17

His wife was ill
he was becoming ill
they drove from one end of the country (with motorway service stops probably)
with a small child
for a 71st Birthday party. not even a ferkin zero

Stephen Kinnock got roasted for sitting at the end of his dad's garden on his birthday ....

mbosnz · 23/05/2020 19:17

A good Dad would have been sorting out how he (him, not somebody else) would look after his wife and child while potentially getting crook himself. Like bloody thousands across the country, if not millions across the world, have done, without running home to Mummy and Daddy.

Truthpact · 23/05/2020 19:19

Ah I actually thought this was another time he'd done this, as I thought he'd already been called out on numerous trips during lockdown, and this was a new one after some restrictions were lifted. That must be a different person I'm thinking of.

How did this only come to light now anyway if it happened almost 2 months ago? Who the hell did he piss off recently? 😂

ListeningQuietly · 23/05/2020 19:22

truthpact
It was known (and on MN) at the time
but the Graun has been pushing for answers
and decided to go for the kill on a bank holiday weekend

Humphriescushion · 23/05/2020 19:22

Some in the spectator agree.

GreyGardens88 · 23/05/2020 19:22

I'm considering lockdown over for me now, I have no respect or trust in the government anymore. I'm going to start making unnecessary journeys on public transport from tomorrow

Everhopeful1 · 23/05/2020 19:25

Wonder if the wife wrote the article about their 'covid' experience to offset this coming out - I'm not even convinced he was ill. Surely those very close to the Sage lot & Cabinet can get a quick test.
