How do those in Scotland feel about the plan for Scottish schools to return on 11th Aug part-time only?

Well it wouldn’t surprise me at all now if BJ et al start talking about schools in England going back in mid - August

fuck that, it won't happen. They won't have the funding to pay overtime to volunteer teachers, and parents and children who have been working non-stop won't just give up on a well deserved break!

Kids are usually exhausted by the time October half term arrive, no way can they cope with half the summer break gone.

Kids have been pretty much locked up for weeks, they don't need to be sent back to school early.

midnightstar66 · 21/05/2020 14:53

@LagunaBubbles there was plenty talk about p7's going back in some capacity for some transition time this term. I assume today's announcement rules that out now

hablar · 21/05/2020 14:54

I hope so Paf. I’m hoping by August, restrictions will be further lifted so they can meet their friends and hang out. Plus we can at least get a few barbecues in and have people over!

Belindabelle · 21/05/2020 14:57

I wonder if some schools will stop earlier to accommodate the universal start of 11th Aug. Our school was due to stop on 26June and restart on 19th Aug.

TrickyWords · 21/05/2020 14:58

@midnightstar66 I think the opposite. It specifically says some transition arrangements for P1 and S1 before the summer. It will obviously be different but they are planning something.

connellwaldron · 21/05/2020 14:58

@LagunaBubbles I think there was mention of that in the guidance. It said where possible that would be accommodated.

Plaiceholder · 21/05/2020 14:58

Due back 18th here.

Sensible safety first approach from Scottish Government. No issues here.

Nicknacky · 21/05/2020 14:59

Plaiceholder We would have been 18th but having just read the guidance all schools will be back on 11th.

malloo · 21/05/2020 15:01

Pretty much what I was expecting, sounds ok. Just need to confirm if 11th or 18th for us. Making me smile the thought of people worrying it might be too hot to go back to school in Scotland in mid August, they've evidently never come here for their summer holidays :)

Nicknacky · 21/05/2020 15:03

malloo All schools back 11th to give a standardised return across Scotland.

TeeniefaeTroon · 21/05/2020 15:03

@malloo I agree, we had Summer yesterday, that's it for another year 🤣

ScarfLadysBag · 21/05/2020 15:03

I much prefer the Scottish summer dates too, they make far more sense to me than the English ones! July is like peak summer! But glad they are different as it means it's nicer and quieter going on holiday in July Grin

SudokuBook · 21/05/2020 15:06

We were due back on the 15th -yes the Friday. I also have one going into s1.

midnightstar66 · 21/05/2020 15:14

@TrickyWords does it not mean transition in to S1? (I've not read it all) but the p7s are the main thing we've been aware of as primary school staff. Obviously can only talk for our Local council. My sister works in a different council area in a school nursery and although nursery in to p1 was discussed for a while it was seeming increasingly unlikely but p7 was not totally ruled out when I last spoke to her

masonmason · 21/05/2020 15:19

It specifically says some transition arrangements for P1 and S1 before the summer

It is transition for pupils INTO P1 and S1. So yes, the P7’s

Effinell · 21/05/2020 15:20

@krustykittens

Scottish Borders as well? I thought the £16m was a total waste then lockdown happened and I've never been so thankful!

ParkheadParadise · 21/05/2020 15:22

When dd1 started school 20+ years ago P1 only attended in the morning for several weeks.
Wonder if they will do that with dd2 when she starts in August.
Cant believe I'm about to go back to standing about school gates and birthday parties🤣🤣

CaptainMerica · 21/05/2020 15:30

Nothing unexpected really. It's good that teachers will be back for a month, and be able to work out how everything will work before the summer. Hopefully they will be able to communicate it, and parents and children will be able to get used to the idea over the holidays.

I hope primaries do e.g. 2 full days in, rather than morning/afternoon, or week on/week off.

I assumed that the 11th was just a lazy way to say start of term. They have suggested standardised term dates before, and it was very unpopular in the tattie holiday areas. It will be interesting to see what people think if they sneak it in. I'll want to know the impact on the rest of the term dates asap.

Lol at it being hot in August.

Mistressiggi · 21/05/2020 15:39

I'm sorry Captainmerica but teachers won't be back from anything, we are still working and have never stopped - we have meetings but via online mechanisms, and if in the school building can't do much better - social distancing is still very important (assuming we don't want teachers all catching it!)

Mistressiggi · 21/05/2020 15:41

(Sorry you might not have meant it that way but I know many people think we've had an extended holiday)
The plan is to have everyone starting (in whatever form) on the 11th.

TrickyWords · 21/05/2020 15:42

@midnightstar66 I was surprised, but it does say into P1 as well as S1.

Allihearischasemarshallskye · 21/05/2020 15:44

I’ll have my flags out , I can’t wait 😊.

krustykittens · 21/05/2020 15:45

Effinell Yes, we got them around Christmas time, they have been great. It's been an extended holiday for my kids as my eldest was leaving school this year anyway. She was initially told her predicted grades would be awarded to her the week lockdown was announced, then after about a fortnight, her teachers started setting extra assignments so if the SQA queried any grades, she could prove she was working to that level. Since those extra assignments, she has been free as a bird (albeit an unemployed one as she was a waitress). Youngest was doing her nat 5s and some highers as she is S5 but they haven't bothered her with extra work until last week when she started the new curriculum remotely. So far it seems to be working fine. There is a bigger question mark over Uni - my eldest had a place in Dumfries, but it has been radio silence for quite some time. We have no idea if they are going to push start dates back or move to online lectures.

DamnYankee · 21/05/2020 16:01

In CO - staff due back 8/5
kids due back 8/12

Jupiter15 · 21/05/2020 17:01
