to not want DH to 'clean' with Zoflora

PrincessBuggerPants · 20/05/2020 15:43

My husband does his fair share of cleaning, but does it a bit crap. I have largely put up with this as I am aware he is trying, it is just about livable with and I am aware other men are MUCH, MUCH worse than my husband. DH is also aware of this and reminds me.

However, the latest bugbear is that he insists on using Zoflora to 'clean the kitchen' i.e. wiping down surfaces after preparing a meal. Despite my repeated insistence it is a disinfectant, not a cleaning product and should be used after cleaning, if at all.

AIBU to think he should use a cleaning product instead?

I used to use Zoflora, diluted as per instructions, on the Floors only. Had pets but never cleaned the floor first as such.

icansmellburningleaves · 20/05/2020 16:05

Just throw the Zoflora away that you have in the house and don’t buy any more. To be fair, at least he’s cleaning. My husband cleans and doesn’t do as good a job as me, but he does and I appreciate it. I would pick my battles. This isn’t worth falling out over. I blame that stupid hinch woman Who would sell her soul and her kid for a freebie.

goodwinter · 20/05/2020 16:08

Ok maybe I'm a slob, maybe I just don't understand because I don't use Zoflora (tend to use antibac for surfaces), but... What's the issue? Surely the mechanical act of scouring a surface does the cleaning of dirt/grime, and the disinfectant gets rid of germs?

JudyCoolibar · 20/05/2020 16:10

I suggest you just stop buying Zoflora, or hide it away. I hate those artificial chemical smells around the house anyway.

PotholeParadise · 20/05/2020 16:10

I think it is rather basic that 'cleaning', as in removing dirt like dust, crumbs, and kitchen grease is different from just squirting disinfectant on a surface.

joystir59 · 20/05/2020 16:11

I use diluted bleach in a spray bottle to clean everything everywhere

Ninkanink · 20/05/2020 16:11

@Drivingdownthe101 fair enough...neither have I, but I just know these and other random things. I suppose I’ve come across it somewhere at some point and just filed it away.

I’m also not particularly interested in cleaning but I am interested in ensuring that any effort I do go to is as efficient and as effective as possible.

LolaSmiles · 20/05/2020 16:12

Oh, he's a procrastinator cleaner. The bathroom thing would annoy me. Is he just standing staring at his phone for 90mins? I'd not care if it took him longer to do things but it has to be actually done at the end.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 20/05/2020 16:12

You should be using disinfectant on surfaces at the moment.

This really isn't true.

If you are hand washing and social distancing you should not need to disinfect inside your own home.

Bbang · 20/05/2020 16:12

I prefer an antibacterial cleaner myself so I don’t have to do the same area twice, I tend to use the one from M&S and Elbow Grease for the greasy areas and bleach for the floor.

If I was you I’d bin all the zoflora and buy in what you like so he has to use it lol

PrincessBuggerPants · 20/05/2020 16:13

For context I don't really agree with over-use of disinfectants normally (though appreciate we are not in normal times rn), and originally bought this when our toddler had a vomiting bug and was desperate for something to get rid of the smell of vomit and was sick of the smell of bleach. Also to disinfect soft surfaces.

There is no evidence Zoflora works for coronavirus or norovirus (because they are hard to study, but still), you are better off with bleach surely?

goodwinter · 20/05/2020 16:13

@potholeparadise ok sure, but from the post it doesn't sound like OP's husband is just moving crumbs around. It seems like it's the choice of product that's the issue?

Winterwoollies · 20/05/2020 16:13

I only use Zoflora - heavily diluted - on the floors. I find the smell too cloying otherwise. Also I don’t like to use too much as it’s toxic to pets while wet.

Get him to buy a disinfectant spray to use if it bothers you this much. I imagine the overpowering smell is enough to drive you mad.

Drivingdownthe101 · 20/05/2020 16:13

I imagine he wouldn’t just be spraying it though PotholeParadise? More like spraying it and wiping off with a cloth, along with the dust and crumbs etc? I might be wrong though.

Ninkanink · 20/05/2020 16:15

I don’t believe in overuse of chemical agents either. I generally prefer to just keep things clean/grease free and am fairly relaxed about using disinfectants (except after use of raw meat and poultry, obviously). Again, efficient and effective.

OneandTwenty · 20/05/2020 16:15

So many women agree with your DH, there are facebook groups and all sorts dedicated to zoflora addicts, these people put it absolutely everywhere.

Just be careful not to mix products together. If your kitchen is disinfected occasionally, and you live the windows opened because zoflora stinks (and poison your pets) it's not a huge deal. I would just tell your DH the stench is giving you headaches so a change for good old soap would be very helfpul.

GreyishDays · 20/05/2020 16:16

Water and soap is a disinfectant.

MissMarks · 20/05/2020 16:17

I use zoflora diluted in a basin with fairy liquid and hot water to wipe the kitchen down. I like the smell.

PrincessBuggerPants · 20/05/2020 16:17

Interesting responses. Seems I have overestimated what was a normal level of understanding of the mechanisms of cleaning vs disinfecting.

So while DH is indeed using it incorrectly, his misunderstanding about what the product actually does is not unusual, though perhaps his pigheadedness is? I will be a bit easier on him. Thanks all.

ImInAStateOfMind · 20/05/2020 16:18

Just get some of the lemon antibacterial kitchen wipes and job’s a good’un!

Why spend longer then you need to?

TheOrigBrave · 20/05/2020 16:18

and I am aware other men are MUCH, MUCH worse than my husband. DH is also aware of this and reminds me.

Eugh.
I am trying SO darn hard to raise my sons not to think like this.

chomalungma · 20/05/2020 16:19

To all those people using anti-bacterial on surfaces - why not just use a disinfectant?

Really- if you want to get rid of the virus, you could just use soap and water in a solution....

But disinfectants like Zoflora or bleach solution will do the job

PlanDeRaccordement · 20/05/2020 16:19

Zoflora is the same as Dettol just more concentrated (so more eco friendly). Benzalkhonium Chloride
If he is putting a bit in a sink with a squirt of fairy liquid and then wiping down the counters that should be ok.

butterpuffed · 20/05/2020 16:20

Or boiling my bras with his jeans

Why do either need to be boiled ? Shock

Drivingdownthe101 · 20/05/2020 16:21

I didn’t realise cleaning was so complicated Grin. I just use a multi surface cleaning spray.
