And no change before the 28th. What the hell is Nichola Sturgeon thinking?!

OP posts:
hulahooper2 · 18/05/2020 16:58

I am not an SNP supporter but think NS is doing a great job keeping us safe

lowlandLucky · 18/05/2020 16:58

I am no fan of NS but i think she is doing the right thing

ToffeeYoghurt · 18/05/2020 17:01

the economic carnage

I thought Scotland were continuing the UK's semi lockdown longer than England?
If Scotland waits until the infection rate is lower, their economy will of course suffer less damage as a result.

olivehater · 18/05/2020 17:08

Uhh truthpact you can’t pretend there isn’t some truth in that. Obviously scottish people pay tax but you have heard of the Barnett formula haven’t you. The English tax payer does generally lose out and we do get less money spent per head on us.

FuckYouCorona · 18/05/2020 17:11

I think NS has made the right call & shows she has some common sense. I don't agree with a lot of her views but this I am 100% for. I wish those of us living in England had a more sensible person looking out for us instead of a buffoon like Boris!

ToffeeYoghurt · 18/05/2020 17:13

Agree FuckYouCorona
I'm also in England.

Jaxhog · 18/05/2020 17:47

Fuck I wish somebody had let me in on the secret about only English people having to pay tax while I sit on my fat Scottish arse doing fuck all rather than working two jobs.

Hmm. I guess the fact that Scotland has a population of 5 million people to England's 55 million makes them equal contributors?? Not to mention the Barnett formula?

nowayhose · 18/05/2020 17:48

@ YouHurtMeSoMuch

Looking at all the other posters, it appears it's YOU who have no common sense Hmm

You cannot stand to have so many people to actually tell you that YABU can you ?

If the shoe fits....................

Jaxhog · 18/05/2020 17:49

And wait for NS to come demanding extra funding for the CV crisis!!

nowayhose · 18/05/2020 17:50

81% presently agree, YABU...........................Grin

StoorieHoose · 18/05/2020 17:52

@jaxhog so it's only a Union when you want to store your nuclear deterrent up here, access the oil, water, gas and electricity and when you want to use us as guinea pigs for taxes?

Do fuck off

Truthpact · 18/05/2020 17:57

@olivehater

Yeah I know England pays out less per head that the rest of the UK. But to say what Jaxhog said is incredibly stupid and part of the reason why there is so much stupid hatred between both countries. Don't try and pretend that only English are taxpayers and that you pay everything for us. We pay in more than we get back, an argument the independence lot love to throw out. I'm not even for independence, I think it would bankrupt Scotland, but when you've got attitudes like this floating around, can't really blame them for hating people like that.

StoorieHoose · 18/05/2020 18:02

Yes let's ignore the fact that Northern Ireland receive the most money per head via the Barnett Formula

Mascotte · 18/05/2020 18:07

My points have nothing to do with independence.

But that's what it always comes down to if you question the SNP policy on anything. And some English bashing.

I no time for Boris et al, whom I despise. But I'm questioning this policy. I'm Scottish by the way.. and not a Tory or a billionaire: the stock insults for dissenters.

notalwaysalondoner · 18/05/2020 18:08

With 2000 deaths out of a population of 5.5m it does seem quite extreme to keep the whole country under lockdown for more than 2 months... I’m surprised they didn’t just focus on the big cities. Without a proper testing and tracing strategy I don’t think lockdowns will really provide a solution - you’ll still have cases in the population that will just spread as soon as you lift it. I hope very much that that is what they’re working on night and day in the meantime, but I’m not too hopeful...

flamegame · 18/05/2020 18:13

Many regions of the UK receive net transfers at the moment, not just Scotland (receive more in spending than their region pays in tax - all except London).

It was true up to 2011/12 that Scotland paid more in than it got back though (due to oil) and is the source of the bitterness. It hasn't been true in any year since then and it's a thorny area [even if you want to be dependent on fossil fuels] as these two links show.

Certainly the independence leaners think that in a brilliant post referendum negotiation Scotland will get to keep all future oil revenues and take on no UK debt.

www.channel4.com/news/factcheck/factcheck-has-scotland-subsidised-the-rest-of-the-uk

Coronavirus hardly strengthens the case for economic independence - the argument Scotland will walk away without a share of the national debt seems even weaker at this point (furlough ahem).

flamegame · 18/05/2020 18:14

why should we ignore the fact that NI, Wales, Scotland and many regions of England receive more per head than they contribute at the minute? That's a successful union. I agree that talking about 'the Scots' as if they're the only ones is offensive and incorrect.

ConstantlySeekingHappiness · 18/05/2020 18:19

Obviously scottish people pay tax but you have heard of the Barnett formula haven’t you. The English tax payer does generally lose out and we do get less money spent per head on us

England do benefit awfully from all of our lovely Scottish resources though.... 🙋🏻‍♀️

But yeah..... keep going on about the Barnett formula and ignore that.

Bubblebee7 · 18/05/2020 18:22

I think NS is doing the right thing. UK is embarrassing I know there’s no easy option but there’s no need for how disorganised the whole thing is here.

Sonichu · 18/05/2020 18:28

"Hmm. I guess the fact that Scotland has a population of 5 million people to England's 55 million makes them equal contributors?? Not to mention the Barnett formula?"

Don't forget all the natural resources we have here that we so generously share with our English cousins. But don't let that get in the way of the usual scrounging jocks bullshit.

dementedma · 18/05/2020 18:32

Sturgeon is being very naive if she thinks all Scots are happily sticking to lockdown as it is. Everyone round here is sick of being treated like children and watching her prevaricate as part of her usual chess game with UK govt. Roads are busy, shops are busy, people in and out of each others houses here in Fife. Its hardly lockdown
Hospitals are empty, military being stood down.

StoorieHoose · 18/05/2020 18:34

oi @Buccanarab this thread needs your Scotland Natural Resources post 😜

ssd · 18/05/2020 18:35

It's hard but I'm sure NS is doing the right thing. I'm shocked at the amount of folk out and about in England some of the pics on the news are horrific. There will definitely be a spike because of this and we'll all be lock down again.

LemonadePockets · 18/05/2020 18:38

Coming from someone who lives in Scotland, it’s most certainly not full lock down. People are doing as they please, roads mega busy, people everywhere !

It’s ridiculous

SusieOwl4 · 18/05/2020 18:39

Perhaps it because Scotland’s death per million is higher than England’s ?

Or perhaps it to make a political point .

We will probably never know .
