To think the north of England offers a worse quality of life than the South or Midlands?

I was thinking of moving to Lancashire, but having done some research online, it seems a lot of people have negative opinion of it. I'm now set on Warwickshire or Leicestershire. Does the north in general offer a worse quality of life than the Midlands? I know its cheaper up north but is it much worse up there?

but the problem is it doesn’t really go anywhere after that and gets a bit tiring to read

If only MN would introduce a function so reading a full thread wasn’t compulsory. Maybe some sort of ability to come out of a thread and choose another.

Worth considering for “premium members” maybe...

Hingeandbracket · 19/05/2020 10:06

Obviously the South-East offers the best quality of life in the country

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

Do people actually believe this shit?

CorianderLord · 19/05/2020 10:10

Well like all things, it depends.

If you want a house up north for £90k then you're going to end up in a less nice area because that's how prices work. If you're willing to pay £400k you'll be in a better area which is lovely.

I was raised up North in an area where the house prices were comparable with outer London - except they were far nicer.

Booboodisney · 19/05/2020 10:12

@donquixotedelamancha exactly. Ginger a few middle class sarky London types on here who are funny but if you started a thread slagging off Balham you’d just get handwringing, diatribes about how their children MUST grow up near art galleries and how the north is full of people who live on pasties and drink gravy and have never stepped foot in a theatre. I think the defensiveness and lack of humour comes from the fact that people have often had to sell an organ —or their soul— to buy their very average house, and are defensive of their choices.

The northern ‘whippets and flatcaps’ sarcasm is because yes, people live in the north; we have northern accents but we are also teachers, doctors, accountants, work in the media etc. We can get ocado delivered if we want, and go for brunch. We are really not so different . It’s just self deprecating humour that’s sort of engrained.

@TorysSuckRevokeArticle50

Lived here all my life and love it. Slap bang in the middle of the country, easy to get anywhere and loads of stuff to do.

Hugely diverse culturally, in the city we have the space centre, abbey park, The Curve theatre, DeMontfort Hall, 2 universities, a massive food market, several art hubs (The Phoenix, LCB depot), museums. And very short drives, train or bus rides to Leicestershire connect you to beautiful countryside, market towns and event locations.

And practically nothing in the way of decent nightlife, if your idea of a good night out is going to a chain restaurant and the cinema, then I’m sure it’s a wonderful city, but it offers very very little compared to cities like Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool etc, which are culturally diverse, have an abundance of galleries, museums, theatres, markets, food halls, bars, restaurants, shops, nightclubs etc. Housing is also quite expensive and the city centre has a massive homeless problem which makes it feel unsafe when walking around at night.

I think if you’re a bit older then it’s probably fine as the surrounding villages and country pubs are gorgeous, but we moved there three years ago in our mid twenties from Birmingham and London and were crawling the walls with boredom after about 6 months. It’s just not a great city for young professionals, I would compare it to Coventry or Wolverhampton tbh. Nottingham is much much nicer.

hablar · 19/05/2020 10:23

You don’t have to RTFT. The jokes are the same on P13 as on P1.

Look, to be honest, everybody knows that there’s areas of every region that are worth a visit and other areas, not so much. I do find this statement about people talking to you on buses all a bit mind-numbing though. Who cares? People in London are friendly enough, if that’s what rocks your boat. People just don’t need to make a song and dance about it. People are here from across the world. Life is what you make it, wherever you live. I also think this need to presume that “taking the piss” is a regional phenomena that makes “Northerners” stand out, is a bit daft tbh. London is a world city with so much cultural variation, different humours and whatever, that “the North” is neither here nor there in the general scheme of life.

PotatoAndButterPie · 19/05/2020 10:26

Fun fact: Aylesbury has more roundabouts per square km than Milton Keynes.

I'm a southerner who lives up north in Yorkshire. I've lived in many places in the UK - mostly places in the south, once in the Midlands. Moving up north has been a revelation. I love it. When I was offered a job in Yorkshire I had doubts. I was a typical southerner who didn't know the North well (all our holidays had been in the south when I was a child). I was suspicious of the North believing all this rubbish about "It's grim up north". It is absolutely not! We live in a beautiful suburb of a city (Leeds) . The Yorkshire Dales are on our doorstep. Within my 10 minutes walking distance of my house there are several large parks, forests, open green areas. I'm spoilt for choice when I have my daily walk. No car needed, just head off in the direction I choose and within minutes I'm surrounded by trees, streams, fields etc. I live in a lovely neighbourhood. It's very safe, friendly and everyone looks out for each other. Within a 40 minute drive of my house I can be deep in the countryside or in a beautiful town like Harrogate, Ilkley or York. The people in Yorkshire are very friendly. Yes there are deprived areas up north but I come from a town in the affluent and overcrowded South East that is very deprived. There are real problems with drug addiction, unemployment and mental health issues where I grew up. Plenty of places down south are shit holes and plenty of places up north are affluent and beautiful. You obviously just need to choose wisely. We sold up our very modest house down south and we now have a 5 bedroom house in a good area. I watch my sister and her family struggling in a tiny flat down south. I would happily live up north for the rest of my life.

MarieQueenofScots · 19/05/2020 10:26

Isn’t it fortunate nobody on this thread (which you have allegedly both read and not read Wink) has posted that.

Booboodisney · 19/05/2020 10:26

@hablar why so defensive and bitter ? Pretty funny actually. Grin

chomalungma · 19/05/2020 10:26

One of the things I like about the North is the distinct character of the big cities - such as Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Hull, York, Durham, Newcastle. You can see their roots in their large Victorian buildings and general architecture.

MarieQueenofScots · 19/05/2020 10:27

I once got royally reprimanded by a Londoner on MN for saying I didn’t need to work full time. Apparently that wasn’t possible “up North” and she was pissed off working all hours to afford a room in a house whilst funding my lifestyle. It was both hilarious and terrifying Grin

Blibbyblobby · 19/05/2020 10:28

But nobody has said anything whatsoever about whippets or miners confused The only people talking about whippets and miners are the “Northerners” themselves in a sort of self-congratulatory, repetitive kind of humour which they proclaim is so unique to them confused and nobody else can “get.” But yes, people do “get” it and yes, it’s funny maybe for the first 20 or so posts, but the problem is it doesn’t really go anywhere after that and gets a bit tiring to read.

Oh my god this with knobs on!! I'm so glad someone said it.

Booboodisney · 19/05/2020 10:30

@MarieQueenofScots hablar is so busy experiencing all the culture of London that she clearly hasn’t got time to read the thread, but she knows exactly what’s been said on every page since the first one!

Her user name is a FORRIN word, she is so worldly !! Being from up north, I’m both impressed and startled !

Have a cuppa and a biscuit love, you’ll come round. Nothing too exotic though, maybe a digestive lest it’s too exciting.

hablar · 19/05/2020 10:32

Why would I be bitter about the North of England. I’m from Spain Confused. If I wanted to live in the North of England, then I’d move. But I don’t.

Booboodisney · 19/05/2020 10:32

@user1471565182 Scunnyyyy

user1471565182 · 19/05/2020 10:33

I was taught once in school that 'the north' is actually an economic line running from around Plymouth to Skegness (including Wales, west country and much of the midlands)

Booboodisney · 19/05/2020 10:34

@hablar I don’t think you get what I’m saying. That’s ok.
My grandma is Spanish! She moved to a northern city when she was v young. Just so you know it’s not a homogenous mass oF Anglo-Saxon pastry eaters.
