To think the north of England offers a worse quality of life than the South or Midlands?

I was thinking of moving to Lancashire, but having done some research online, it seems a lot of people have negative opinion of it. I'm now set on Warwickshire or Leicestershire. Does the north in general offer a worse quality of life than the Midlands? I know its cheaper up north but is it much worse up there?

I had to laugh about the haggard comments about northerners too. I'm really sorry to have to break it to my southern cousins but I'm always amazed when I go back up north at how many stunning women there are in comparison.

BikeRunSki
Grew up in Central London (SW1, none of this saying you come from London and actually coming from Ilford or Bromley), couldn’t wait to leave. Went to university in Newcastle, have spent the last 22 years happily in Yorkshire. Have no intention of ever living elsewhere.

You sound spookily similar to me. Also grew up in proper central London, North Yorks for the last 20 yrs, and I do all the things in your username.

BikeRunSki · 18/05/2020 21:42

👋 @ReceptaclefortheRespectable - we’re in S/W Yorks .

TeaForTara · 18/05/2020 23:46

@BikeRunSki not too far from me perhaps - I’m near the big mast.

PickAChew · 18/05/2020 23:56

@JustinMyJustin how can you stand it in Durham? Look how grim it is!

Hideous here too - awful living near a beautiful park and near a town with lots of cafés, 20 minutes from the country side, 15 minutes from cinemas/the theatre and hundreds of eateries

agonyauntie2020 · 19/05/2020 01:29

What's an "avocado"? We dint ave posh stuff like that oop ere.

Wondering if OP's a journo given the four threads, same topic?

Anyroad OP, we'll tek the piss nonstop oop north so if y'er hard of thinking/not much sense of yumour, suggest you stay put. At least you won't have to deal with all the soot where y'are.

SkiingIsHeaven · 19/05/2020 01:48

OP. You are being very goady and showing a great deal of ignorance.

Just stay where you are love. You really would not fit in.

We live in very spacious pothole in the M6, with cold and colder running water and all the roadkill we can eat.

bellinisurge · 19/05/2020 06:42

You will need your big coat but, because we're all so pinched faced and hard we don't wear ours until mid-January Wink

dottiedodah · 19/05/2020 07:38

I think it depends really. The weather in the South is generally better ,and there tends to be more work .However house prices are high and so is the cost of living too. Like everything there are pluses and minuses .Further north, prices are usually lower and you get a lot more for your money .

BikeRunSki · 19/05/2020 07:44

👋 @TeaForTara, we are too. In the village with the swimming pool. There’s quite a few of us on here who seem to pop up on threads about “where can I live that has ok house prices and good schools”, “where can I stop near the M1” and “what landmark means you are nearly home”.

Rightbutno · 19/05/2020 08:16

Is it possible to have a discussion about the differences between the North and South without everyone in the North getting defensive and sarcastic?

Yes, it is a genuine question. I’m sure you appreciate the OP was a touch disingenuous.

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 19/05/2020 08:20

Ok @ElsieBear90 no dissing Leicester please.

Lived here all my life and love it. Slap bang in the middle of the country, easy to get anywhere and loads of stuff to do.

Hugely diverse culturally, in the city we have the space centre, abbey park, The Curve theatre, DeMontfort Hall, 2 universities, a massive food market, several art hubs (The Phoenix, LCB depot), museums. And very short drives, train or bus rides to Leicestershire connect you to beautiful countryside, market towns and event locations.

“what landmark means you are nearly home”

Angel of the North!

I luffs her!

Of course it is, providing that the southerners stop writing the north off as a cultural wasteland full of poverty stricken Brexit-voting imbeciles.

MarieQueenofScots · 19/05/2020 08:26

BarbaraofSeville

That’s haggard imbeciles thank you very much Grin

BarbaraofSeville · 19/05/2020 08:27

And yes, I can see what I did there.

Nobody is defensive or sarcastic!

We're poking a bit of gentle fun at the stereotypes people believe about our areas.

Many of the southern responders (humourless gits to a (wo)man, it seems) take it so seriously it's sometimes unbelievable.

Anyway - I have to go. I have to fry a leek for DH's breakfast - he's promised to put a pit-pony flap in the scullery door today and then he's taking the kids socially-distanced ratting to get summat nice for w'tea.

GeraltOfRivia · 19/05/2020 08:34

Schadenfreude - I love the Angel too. I can walk there from my house and do so with dog. It's a great welcome home.

Northerners can obviously have a discussion about the differences with the south without sarcasm. We choose not to when a load of offensive stereotypes are chucked at us. If you like we could set the whippets on you instead of the sarcasm?

chomalungma · 19/05/2020 08:36

I think it depends on how much generalising goes on.

There is a lot going on in the North. There are also a lot of issues - when you look at deprivation, parts of the North occupy large parts of the list. There is a reason about the Red Wall and 'left behind'. But there are also a lot of well off people in the North - especially those who have a good salary compared to house prices. I wonder how may people in that group are on MN and posting here.

I live in the North - on an ok salary - but in an expensive city. Luckily I have a low mortgage but if not, then my city would be unaffordable for me - as it is for many people on on average salary (for where I live) compared to the average house price.

Zaphodsotherhead · 19/05/2020 08:37

I can only aspire to look haggard. Right now I'm more on the dessicated end of the scale.

GeraltOfRivia · 19/05/2020 08:40

@Zaphodsotherhead love the username.
