To think the north of England offers a worse quality of life than the South or Midlands?

I was thinking of moving to Lancashire, but having done some research online, it seems a lot of people have negative opinion of it. I'm now set on Warwickshire or Leicestershire. Does the north in general offer a worse quality of life than the Midlands? I know its cheaper up north but is it much worse up there?

@SueEllenMishke does scone rhyme with gone? It does here! Scone to rhyme with cone is all kinds of ridiculous!

NiceTwin · 17/05/2020 22:10

Butter Pie, nuff said Wink

DeadButDelicious · 17/05/2020 22:12

Oh dear me no, lass! You don't want to come up here! Why there be nothing but mines and flat caps as far as the eye can see. No, best you stay where you are.

donquixotedelamancha · 17/05/2020 22:12

the sheer volume and range of grassroots and niche stuff in London is so much wider, which is a function of (1) there being so many people that almost anything can find an audience, and (2) a self-reinforcing trend for London attracting away people from other regions who might otherwise be doing grassroots and niche stuff in their home towns.

You missed out (3) 5 times as much government spending on culture per capita in London compared to the rest of the UK.

Schmoana · 17/05/2020 22:13

If you like the sun stay down south. We get it but nowhere near as much Sad

ILikeDemFriesNICannotLie · 17/05/2020 22:15

Fuckin awful OP. Pains me to my core that I live a 30 minute walk away from my favourite picnic spot (pictured) and a 10-15 minute drive from the centre of the nearest city (to be fair, a good half hour in the worst bit of rush hour, which is hard to avoid cause it lasts a good 15 minutes). And I have to pay £450 rent (inc. all utilities) on my tiny garden flat for the fucking privilege.

Also the weather is grim ALL the time. There is no sun in summer or snow in winter. It's year long rain. You will need a flat cap to keep thee 'ead dry, but it will probably be stolen by a whippet.

Wouldn't be so bad but we don't even have a proper Booths in the nearest city, they went and put a fucking Waitrose in instead. If I wanted to pay Booth's prices for what I could get in Aldi or Lidl I'd fucking head to Aldi or Lidl and burn me some twenties in the car park before doing me shop. I mean, have you COMPARED the cheese counters at Booths n Waitrose? Thank fuck for trips to Tebay services aye.

Can't even have a proper grim moan to the family. They're mostly in Cumbria so my part of Yorkshire is down south to them, and I deserve all I get 'cause the hills ent pointy enuff 'ere.

@ILikeDemFriesNICannotLie

I love that place. Miss going there but it's not too far from me.

But far enough at the moment as to not to go there.

donquixotedelamancha · 17/05/2020 22:18

Its unfair we just get lumped in with 'the south' and assumed to be wealthy and privileged

True but I suspect most people have at least some awareness of the nuance.

Sorry to rant, this topic gets my goat as we literally never get a mention

No apology needed. It honestly beggars belief that people are not more angry at the huge size of the gap.

All this argument you see about small discrepencies about different classes of investment between say wales and the midlands or SW and NW is just pocket change. If the SE got similar amounts to the rest of the UK we could all receive transformational increases in funding for many, many areas of life.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 17/05/2020 22:18

Aye it's crap up here. Honestly, I'm dying to move down south so I can swap my 4/5 bedroom house for a 1 bed flat and panic about not being able to get my children into any of the local schools.

C0untDucku1a · 17/05/2020 22:18

Where I walked to today. In Preston. Totally grim. Save yourself and stay down south!

I live in the Ribble Valley, it’s bloody beautiful ❤️

ReceptacleForTheRespectable · 17/05/2020 22:21

The weather is indeed dreadful, and the scenery crap. Just look at what I endured today. I even had to cycle here from my house because us northerners are all too poor to afford cars.

I'd pick up here every day of the week. I also think PP is a bit naieve about Northern culture being sooo much worse than London- we do a lot with very little.

But you must admit: if ballet, musical theatre or looking at old stuff we knicked from other countries is your priority, London wins.

alphajuliet123 · 17/05/2020 22:22

You know how America sometimes comes across as arrogant and small-minded because they truly believe they're greater than everyone else, while we all point and laugh?

That's you, London, that is.

Turtlepants · 17/05/2020 22:23

Disgusting beaches here in the north east, look at the absolute state of that

ghostyslovesheets · 17/05/2020 22:24

YANBU OP - I am currently stuck in the Midlands - there is absolutely no way I am planning to

sell my home when the youngest goes off to Uni
Move back to Merseyside
Buy a little terraced house outright
live by the sea
be surrounded by people who laugh and have passion for everything
be with my friends and family

Don't get me wrong - I actually like my lovely midlands town but obviously the inbuilt homing northern radar will get me in the end yay god damn it

ILikeDemFriesNICannotLie · 17/05/2020 22:25

@chomalungma

It's a great spot, even if it is one of the busier ones on sunny bank holidays! Hope you're able to get back here soon and you've got some good spots nearby yesen to enjoy during lockdown Smile

userxx · 17/05/2020 22:26

@Turtlepants Bloody awful, why the hell would anyone to go there 🙄

YorkshirePud1 · 17/05/2020 22:28

I grew up in the midlands and moved up to Yorkshire 6 years ago. I will never, ever go back. I absolutely love it up here, it's a beautiful part of the country and I would say my quality of life has improved massively. Of course, there are good and bad areas wherever you go though, but obviously you know that 🙄
