Woman selling Tesco shopping slots for £30

www.entertainmentdaily.co.uk/lifestyle/woman-admits-selling-supermarket-home-delivery-slots-to-the-elderly-and-vulnerable-for-30-each/

Profiting from the misery of others or supplying a service to fill a gap in the market?

I think this shows entrepreneurial thinking. She saw a gap in the market and moved to fill it. Its not against the law.

Not a particularly easy way to make money. She has to stay up to bid for all those slots, arrange payment and delivery and do the shopping for all those people. Obviously it wont last as when the lockdown has ended people will go back to physical shopping and there will be plenty of slots available again.

But it shows enterprise and she could graduate to providing a "personal shopper" service with a bit more thought and organization.

Shes complete utter scum. The worse is bit is shes selling her story to the papers to get money on top of the scam shes doing. She has zero shame.

C8H10N4O2 · 17/05/2020 12:47

Both are scum IMO

Agreed. However its notably the "small" exploiters who attract derision here and elsewhere on SM as well as in most of the press. I agree also that its partly partly class but even outside class money and power speak.

CHIRIBAYA · 17/05/2020 12:49

Grotesquely immoral. You are talking about access to food not bloody concert tickets! & these people should have free slots anyway. Where is the 'gap in the market' that you refer to? That people can't get slots? Now you know why. Private gain over the public good? That's not what we all need right now.

BlueBrian · 17/05/2020 12:52

There are people who make up stories like this, get one of their mates to pose for the photos, and flog the the whole thing to the papers, it's probably not even true.

GabsAlot · 17/05/2020 13:35

how does that shoppingslot work they buy it for you have they pre booked lots of slots themselves?

iklboo · 17/05/2020 13:42

It's disgraceful profiteering. Not 'Dragons Den entrepreneurial genius'.

ScarletFever · 17/05/2020 16:12

@C8H10N4O2

Somerset Capital Management

what are they doing?

squirrelsbizaar · 17/05/2020 19:08

@NamesNamesSoManyNames. They are elderly people that don’t know how to work technology. I am also presuming given that they don’t know how to use technology, she’s also ordering their shopping too. If its taking her a few hours to secure the slots, then input shopping. £30 is working for minimum wage.
The story is in the Sun, which by its very nature is sensationalistic, they will have asked her leading questions to make her look like a prize twat.
It sounds very much like she’s providing a personal assistant role to elderly people that can afford it. Not all elderly people are vulnerable and some have money.
Giving her the benefit of the doubt don’t think what’s shes doing is much different to other people that work with elderly, vulnerable clients in exchange for money.

Instead of just having a knee jerk reaction to a click bait headline and half information, consider the source and the fact she’s also just lost her job before you jump on the hate band wagon.

NamesNamesSoManyNames · 17/05/2020 21:55

squirrelsbizaar. Righto. I can't even be arsed to address your post really.

The story is in the Sun, which by its very nature is sensationalistic, they will have asked her leading questions to make her look like a prize twat
She did that all by herself.

squirrelsbizaar · 17/05/2020 22:48

I’ll just repeat it for you

it’s ‘story’ taken from THE SUN.

Story can be summarised as such
Woman loses job, due to pandemic.
Woman moves back to parents home
Woman is asked by elderly family friends that probably feel sorry for her to run errands for a bit of cash.
Woman bigs herself up to a sun reporter.
Sun newspapers capitalises on contentious issue of supermarket slots and publishes embellished article for click bait.
People that only read headline, or fail to grasp that the Sun is a shit newspaper, call her nasty names.
The sun newspaper - job done.
HTH.

em90792 · 17/05/2020 23:23

Tesco have limited to one slot a week ...

Aridane · 17/05/2020 23:58

Happily the woman has been named and shamed globally

Lozz22 · 18/05/2020 00:11

Community helper my arse!

SinisterBumFacedCat · 18/05/2020 01:43

Blimey she could have ordered herself a bottle of bleach from Tesco’s to do her roots.

Wendigogo · 18/05/2020 02:17

@squirrelsbizaar

No doubt she sold her story to the Sun so I wont be getting my violin out.

She said herself that some of her friends were horrified at her, what did she expect?

ElizabethMainwaring · 18/05/2020 03:03

In that Sun article Louise Lucas, the woman in question, is deliberately posing looking very 'bitchy'. Crossing her arms and glaring provocatively at the camera.
She wants her 5 minutes of fame. She was expecting to be on This Morning at least.

Gingerkittykat · 18/05/2020 04:06

Wow, that clickbait article really has people frothing at the mouth. No wonder all the rags are publishing this story, I wouldn't believe everything you read.

Truthpact · 18/05/2020 08:26

Or to those defending her, she could just be a totally scummy bitch who doesn't give a shit about other people and only about herself? Those people do exist you know, not everyone is a replica of mother Theresa.

squirrelsbizaar · 18/05/2020 09:08

@Wendigogo. I don’t have any feelings about her either way.
To me she’s someone that’s making the best of a bad situation. The people that she working with can afford to pay her, they’re perfectly entitled to the supermarket slots, if they want to pay someone else to spend their time finding them that’s up to them. She not coercing anybody.
She’s hardly ‘coining it in’ or whatever expression the Sun used.
‘I’m selling 10 supermarket slots a week’
10 slots x £30 = £300 per week, less cost of delivery £6 x 10 = £60
Total for week £240.
She staying up for hours to get the slots and ordering the shopping, not to mention the work that will go into behind the scenes to get the shopping list. She will be barely making minimum wage.
I’ve no idea about her motivations for approaching the sun, maybe she needed the money ?
I wouldn’t say she’s particularly entrepreneurial, she’s basically running errands for elderly friends and family for cash. Hardly worthy of a dragons den appearance, or the amount of hate the story as generated.

SoupDragon · 18/05/2020 09:12

No, she isn't just "running errands". That's something you don't charge for.

squirrelsbizaar · 18/05/2020 09:14

@Truthpact. Maybe she is a ‘scummy bitch’ as you put it, but is it ok to consider that maybe she isn’t and put across an opposing view point.

Aridane · 18/05/2020 09:18

@squirrelsbizaar

Applying that criteria, there would hardly be any threads on Mumsnet

Brefugee · 18/05/2020 09:20

I'm surprised in all the "this is just like the war" rhetoric that the UK PM spouts, that no laws have been made against profiteering.

But that would be completely socialist, wouldn't it? or something.

it's sick-making.

squirrelsbizaar · 18/05/2020 09:34

@soupdragon

Errand -
'a short journey undertaken in order to deliver or collect something, especially on someone else's behalf'
Doesn't say you cant charge money for it.

My mum used to let me keep the change when I ran an errand for her as a kid, would that mean it wasn't an errand ?

Brefugee · 18/05/2020 10:08

have now RTFT and this popped up

But morally how is it different from what Somerset Capital Management do but on a much larger scale? The only difference I see morally is that in this case the "entrepreneur" probably doesn't shove the money into an offshore tax haven.

Frankly? I think venture capitalists and hedge funds are part of the problem these days. And they will deffo profit from the pandemic as part of the ever-growing bunch of disaster capitalists. Naomi Klein will be writing about them in 15 years and we'll all shake our heads and carry on letting them do it.
