To not want my child to return to a school full of reluctant teachers

Even if the Government endorses school reopening, who would want to send their child into an environment where the teachers clearly do not want them there ?

I really hope that the 'science' behind this is correct. The BMA don't think so. Because otherwise the NHS workers we are being told we need to be as brave as will be inundated with school staff by the end of June. You'll have to excuse me if I am sceptical about the scientific evidence coming from the same people who told us care homes would be ok.
I am teaching, marking, giving feedback, checking in on reluctant students, calling parents, attending meetings and trying to also keep my own family going. I am exhausted and being back would be so much easier. And I miss the kids so much. So much that I'd rather carry on doing this rather than risk one life. Statistics show few die, but that's not much comfort if you are the few. We are trying I promise.

I think something is really interesting. I've just been watching the lunchtime news. They had a piece about this being the first weekend that people in England can travel any distance to enjoy outdoor activities.
Councils in Cumbria, Peak District and Both Yorkshire were asking people to think twice about visiting because it was too early and there was risk of virus spread.
They were concerned, even outside that people would not be able to observe social distancing
Now, this is a different scenario to schools going back but it is interesting to compare:

Outdoor activities- risk is mainly to do with large mix of people of all ages not being able to socially distance outside. There is much less risk of other forms of transmission because toilets, cafes, pubs and most shops will be shut.
Schools - fewer adults but higher proportions of children restricted to small groups but indoors for hours at a time. Also not able to socially isolate properly due to age of children or immaturity of teenagers. Much more risk of transmission via door handles, toilets etc even when cleaned regularly. Unable to say for certain how much children can transmit virus. More risks from parents visiting site for drop off and pick up. Hopefully they will socially distance but may not be able to when dealing with youngest children.

I think the teaching scenario seems more risky.
If local councils are staying "too early to visit us, the risks are too great". Surely we need to consider that it may be too risky for more students to be back in school right now. I don't think that teachers are wrong to be saying "too soon" and "we would like these things to be sorted first".

For those saying but Denmark/France/Germany have children going back to school, please compare the arrangements being made there to the guidelines the government have drawn up here. If conditions were the same as in these other countries, then I think most teachers would be more reassured about having more students back.

WillAshton · 16/05/2020 14:13

Posters asking 'genuine questions' about the guidance could actually read it! It's not secret, which is about the only good thing about it. It wasn't released in a timely fashion, it didn't match what was previously said, it is confusing and it is actually only 'guidance' and need not be followed...

But if you think having once gone to school, or having a child in school, qualifies you to know what it's like to work in one or judge the decisions being made in the profession, the least you could do is look at what we're working with.

Theredjellybean · 16/05/2020 14:29

@WillAshton.. Yep thanks I will read it when I have finished my 12 hr shift at gp out of hrs service...

Theredjellybean · 16/05/2020 14:30

Oh yes and after I have gone home and reviewed helped my Yr 12 d and dsd with their school work..

Theredjellybean · 16/05/2020 14:32

I had my opinions of teachers changed today because some mns helpfully and politely replied to me genuine questions.
And then you get snotty snidey posts like that and I think.. Yep.. Teacher...

qweryuiop · 16/05/2020 14:46

@Theredjellybean
All professions come with a range of people, for better or worse.

It is true that some of the genuine questions of seen on here recently seem anything but! But there are plenty of others that have been and I've found most people to actually be very keen to understand, not judge. Yourself included!

HeffalumpsCantDance · 16/05/2020 14:46

FrippEnos those pictures and others like them should be on every front page. Infants are not going to be returning to cozy familiarity, socialising with friends or even playing and interacting properly with others.
They might cope for a day or two, but what sort of a healthy environment is that for small children? Punctuated with ‘Stay in your safe space’ ‘ Don’t touch your friend’ ‘Stop!’ ‘Wash your hands again. And again’

ArtieFufkinPolymerRecords · 16/05/2020 14:47

Why the English govt is trying to send children back in June I don't know. Why can't they go back for an earlier start to the Autumn term in August.

Because teachers, who have been working throughout the lockdown period, are on holiday in August.

LolaSmiles · 16/05/2020 14:47

Most of us are happy to help and answer genuine questions and have interesting discussion.

To be honest, some of the people claiming to be teachers I wonder if they really are, especially at the moment. I can recall some moaning Minnie colleagues who are bitter with their lot, but even they wouldn't come out with some of the things I've seen on here.

HeffalumpsCantDance · 16/05/2020 14:48

Most supply teachers haven’t been paid since March, Artie and you could draft in those who’d almost graduated to run summer schools.

Depends if they've been subjected to some of the absolute shit that many teachers have been on here.

LuckyMarmiteLover · 16/05/2020 14:54

NRTWFT but couldn’t schools break up at the end of May and go back in August so bring forward the school holidays and new term? The teachers would still get their usual number of weeks and foreign holidays aren’t happening anyway.

ArtieFufkinPolymerRecords · 16/05/2020 15:42

Who would run the school - SMT on holiday too. Children starting a new year/reception being taught by supply teachers who don't know them or the school? Also there is usually a reason someone works as supply, quite often that they don't want to/can't commit to working every day for months at a time.

WillAshton · 16/05/2020 15:42

@Theredjellybean

If you're SO busy, doing something SO intrinsically important, then to use the refrain recently repeatedly aimed at teachers... 'How on earth do you have time to be on here?!'

Mayve you genuinely haven't had time to read it. I admit I haven't read every document the government has published recently. But I wouldn't consider questioning the way different institutions are having to make changes like many posters are doing about schools.

I've had a substandard service from a pub who don't normally do takeaways recently. I've seen markings on the floor outside the corner shop which are less than a metre apart. I've seen PCSOs remove face masks to lean in and talk to elderly people. But I dont act like I know everything and it'd be fine if I worked in those roles.

@Theredjellybean Goady. As. Fuck.

LolaSmiles · 16/05/2020 16:25

CallmeAngelina
I am a teacher and am suspicious of some posters who show up with limited posting history claiming to be teachers. They disproportionately seem to do a fairly good job of impersonating some of the claims that goady posters make (and most posters on here who teach have disagreed with).

I'm not talking about people who've posted for a while on education, who help others regularly and who have a understandablu had enough of some of the goady and unpleasant posts on here.

Pomegranatepompom · 16/05/2020 16:32

@LolaSmiles I agree and can’t imagine professionals posting in the manner some have. They are doing such a disservice to the teachers.

CarrieBlue · 16/05/2020 16:38

They are doing such a disservice to the teachers.

But quite good service to a government who wants to demonise the teaching profession and push blame onto their shoulders.

LolaSmiles · 16/05/2020 16:39

That's why I wonder if some of them really are teachers. It seems coincidental that just as the goady threads increase, there's also a sudden increase in posters doing the very thing the goady ones claim.

eveoha · 16/05/2020 16:45

I’m thinking a lot of posters are doing so whilst in a fug of ‘contagion’ - in the psychological sense of the word - language lexicon and register used are often inappropriate. Valid points re teachers expecting parents/primary caretakers to print off reams of ‘Twinkl’ guff and and setting ludicrous challenges involving rolls of toilet paper whilst absolutely no contact made with the children (which is what’s happening in my granddaughter’s school) are unjustifiably condemned as criticism of teachers when they are incontrovertible statements of facts. I had expected a little bit more in terms of pastoral care from her teachers - particularly as they keep banging on about mental health 🙄
