Something to lighten lockdown a bit. I love uniforms, didn’t have them in my country growing up and I think they’re wonderful!

I think Christ’s Hospital probably has the weirdest.

Hill House International and Garden House School have very sweet ones, with GHS being pretty much what I dreamed of when imaging English schools.

My grammar school had brown tunics & yellow blouses,

Similar to you, i went to school in a country without uniform. it was horrendous! if your parents didn’t have money for at least 4-5 pairs of designer jeans, 3-4 pairs of designer trainers, half-yearly changing 100 euro bags etc, you were screwed.
My son’s school uniform is dark green with mint and silver. its beautiful.

Paddingtonthebear · 15/05/2020 18:49

DD’s (state) infants had a lovely red tartan skirt.

handbagsatdawn33 · 15/05/2020 18:49

Posted too soon.
To this day, I don't wear brown or yellow.

tillyandmilly · 15/05/2020 18:53

I went to private school and we have navy berets for winter and boaters for the summer!

bookmum08 · 15/05/2020 18:53

Grilledaubergenes I assume you haven't been near Harris South Norwood at the end of the school day? Scruffy and appallingly behaved children.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 15/05/2020 18:55

My friend went to Christ's hospiral. The uniform was specialist & unchanged since about 1800 or something, so bits of it you got loaned - the long coats they wore could be years and years old, it didn't sound great to be honest.

I like dark green school or burgundy uniforms. I prefer shirts to polo shirts, and v neck jumpers are nicer. My niece and nephews uniform is lovely, burgundy jumpers and there is a neck wool knit option. In summer the girls wear pink check dresses. It looks really smart.

1forAll74 · 15/05/2020 18:58

In my day, from age 11 till 15, we had to wear a navy gymslip, white blouse, navy and white tie, navy knickers, and black shoes. Summer wear was a pale blue and white checked dress, but still with navy knickers, and Clarks brown sandals. The navy knickers, were biggish, and we had to wear them with the white blouse, for PE,and netball and hockey.

RandomMess · 15/05/2020 18:59

You have to get the Christ's Hospital uniform dry cleaned every half term! Obviously they had clean blouses/shirts every day etc.

When it got too small you just trot along and get one that fits, tatty stock gets replaced with new.

The nicest primary school uniform I've seen was a school in Islington. The kids wore there own clothes on the bottom half and school polos and sweatshirts on top, but the sweatshirts and polos were lovely bright colours like yellow, turquoise, pink, green, blue, red and the kids could choose whatever combination they wanted. They all looked like they were wearing a uniform but were able to express some individuality too.

TobyDeLaris · 15/05/2020 19:01

I quite like this school uniform although i prefer revere collar/no tie for girls.
St Philomena Carshalton and Rowan Prep Cobham are my least favourites

Oh and i saw a school uniform in Croydon High St with bright yellow shirt and brown skirt. Don't know what school it was. Didn't like it

AJPTaylor · 15/05/2020 19:04

I used to work in the Kings Road back in the last century. Boys used to come out of school wearing rust coloured cordorouy knickerbockers and beige jumpers. Always found it entertaining as they almost all looked scruffy as anything but I assume it must have been a private posh school.

Glendaruel · 15/05/2020 19:06

When I used to catch the train, I used to see one of the local girls schools who had long skirts. They always looked really smart and happy.

user1471592953 · 15/05/2020 19:06

@LuckyMarmiteLover same here...

MarieQueenofScots · 15/05/2020 19:06

My DD’s was adorable. Summer frocks and straw hat in summer, pinafore and cloche hat in winter.

Those were the days!

ImNotWhoYouThinkIam · 15/05/2020 19:09

I love going to the school uniform shop and seeing all the lovely uniforms.

However the lovely looking ones are the ones that would also be most uncomfortable to wear.
DS1 changed schools last year from one with specific trousers, shirt, tie, jumper and blazer to generic grey trousers, polo and jumper. The jumper and polo have the logo on is which is nice and colourful. The children look smart and comfortable.

My best friend growing up went to a private school where they wore brown and yellow. It was known as shitty custard Grin

SorrelForbes · 15/05/2020 19:12

I loved my middle school uniform of pink and white striped blouses with grey skirts and pink and white striped summer dresses. My bottle green high school garb, not so much!

TobyDeLaris · 15/05/2020 19:13

Some Kent Grammar secondary schools have checked summer dresses which i quite like

junebug21 · 15/05/2020 19:13

My school uniform (secondary) was a white polo, navy sweater and navy cords. LOVED IT!!

GivenchyDahhling · 15/05/2020 19:13

@Catscakeandchocolate I have a feeling I used to teach at your school, that sounds very familiar to me....

MitziK · 15/05/2020 19:16

A local Primary Academy has an absolutely beautifully tailored uniform - piping on every seam, it looks like very high quality grey tweed, top quality shirts, ties and a little straw boater. The teenies look like they have been dressed by a top end tailor - even their book bags appear to be leather and canvas, rather than nylon. If I looked half as good as those kids do in their school clothes, I'd be feeling a million dollars every time I left the house.

However, that quality means cost. And the speed a 3-11 year old grows means it's a huge expense for parents (I suspect it's a way of keeping the MC children in and the WC ones in the catchment out, as they can go to the council primary 250 yards away and wear their trackies, trainers and polo shirts). I also think that it's an unfair restriction on children who should be running, jumping, painting and generally not paying the slightest bit of attention to their clothing/not having parents potentially sobbing at having to find money for yet another blazer or having to get the things dry cleaned.

The publicity shots and films, taken in classes, however, look stunning. Which I'm sure is the main interest. And it's not as if they've got any field to be getting messy in - there's a tiny concrete playground. Nice classrooms, though.

Pompous twats

Tinuviel · 15/05/2020 19:16

I had brown school uniform for 11-14 - it was truly hideous but there was a lot more choice back then - trousers/skirt/pinafore dress, jumper/cardigan, white blouse + tie/brown gingham blouse/yellow nylon jumper. Summer was brown or yellow gingham dresses if you wanted.

Luckily I was in an area where you changed school at 14 and I wore blue for the next 2 years.

I would have loved purple/lilac - much more my colour.

whodunit3 · 15/05/2020 19:18

@CoRhona mine too, Edinburgh by any chance?

littlemyyyy · 15/05/2020 19:19
