Boris declares war on fat

Weallhavevalidopinions · 15/05/2020 09:25

Boris has said his being overweight contributed to his problems with Covid-19.
Stories this morning suggest he will wage war on fat...

What type of help do you think might be suggested?

Have you decided to lose weight due to Covid-19 worries?

YABU - no I will not lose weight due to Covid worries
YANBU - I will lose weight due to Covid worries

I definitely need to lose weight. The increased risk of Covid for overweight people has spurred me on to eat more healthily - not just to lose weight, but to help bolster my immune system.

KipperBang · 15/05/2020 09:41

Loads of media hype which mumsnetters will be able to froth over

And if it's true? Well he's right isn't he? Like him or not, the facts don't change. If you're fat, you're more likely to have complications.

It's up to you what you do with that factual info. Stay fat if you want to. Boris can't lose weight for you

SomeHalfHumanCreatureThing · 15/05/2020 09:41

"I would be delighted to lose two stone if Boris leads by example.

He’s hardly svelte himself, is he?"

He's apparently lost a stone since leaving hospital:

So yeah, crack on

calpolatdawn · 15/05/2020 09:41

Boris had a rather miraculous recovery tbh Hmm

Twooter · 15/05/2020 09:42

I’m the same. Couldn’t work out why I had suddenly gained weight and my breasts have become so much bigger. Hadn’t given perimenopause a thought until it was pointed out to me.

Bumble84 · 15/05/2020 09:42

I don’t think there is any doubting that obesity is an extra risk factor but it is also an extra risk factor for so many other diseases and we still have a huge obesity issue. This would suggest that fear of disease is not a good motivating factor for weight loss. That said maybe because Coronavirus is a more direct and immediate fear then maybe it will urge some people to rethink their diet and exercise. The reasons for obesity are so complex though and I really don’t think a pandemic, serious as it is, will sort it out.

lubeybooby · 15/05/2020 09:42

didn't vote because I'm losing weight but not because of covid, but because all the weight I've lost and good food eaten so far by a complete about turn in my lifestyle has improved all my blood results and health SO staggeringly much that I just want to keep doing it right to a healthy BMI

Sleep apnoea and pre-diabetes gone
vitamin deficiencies gone (D and B12)
dodgy liver results/borderline fatty liver - gone
all iron related results - amazing
Resting heart rate - fit
Aches and pains - gone
Sleep in general - amazing
Energy levels - brilliant

I don't even snore anymore

I have no doubt that all this will really help should I ever catch it, compared to if I'd caught it at my highest weight

ducksback · 15/05/2020 09:42

Quite frankly, Boris can fuck off. How can anyone take anything that bumbling twat says seriously

Except that he is right on this one so hopefully people WILL listen.

The thing is, it's true. Most people with a bit of intelligence would have realised this. He is simply trying to raise awareness - not a bad thing

This.

ducksback · 15/05/2020 09:44

Boris had a rather miraculous recovery tbh

What is your point...Hmm

FrenchBoule · 15/05/2020 09:44

Is he going to release new fitness programme or replace the PE guy?

Ethelfleda · 15/05/2020 09:44

Being overweight makes you at risk of early death already. Are people that irrationally afraid of coronavirus that this will make them get healthy when cancer, heart disease and dementia didn't?

This.
So much about this pandemic is hypocritical.

ducksback · 15/05/2020 09:44

lubey bloody well done lady!

Now - HOW DID YOU DO IT?!

SomeHalfHumanCreatureThing · 15/05/2020 09:45

"I didn't realise that either. 2nd risk factor after age!"

I know, I was shocked! That AL Jazeera article is good, explains it well.

Those of you saying 'boris is overweight, I hope he's leading by example'.. Read some of the articles. That's exactly what he's saying. He thinks he was worse affected by the virus because he's so overweight, and has apparently lost weight since recovering

(i hate Boris, for the record, but he's right here)

iklboo · 15/05/2020 09:45

What - supermodel stick thin Boris?

BIWI · 15/05/2020 09:45

Leaving Lockdown Low Carb Bootcamp starts on 25 May and will last for 5 weeks, if anyone is interested?

info and sign-up thread is here

ducksback · 15/05/2020 09:45

iklboo that is his point isn't it? FFS. Hmm

freedomyes · 15/05/2020 09:45

health professionals have been saying this for YEARS tbh. Its not rocket science.

the doom mongerers won`t like it as its too much common sense.....

ducksback · 15/05/2020 09:46

Why are people being wilfully dense on here?

Pinkblueberry · 15/05/2020 09:46

And also, I HATE the way that war language is being thrown around all over the place at the moment. We aren't at war.

I agree, I think it’s a childish make belief attitude to have. It’s a disease - isn’t not a sentient evil being that’s actively chosen to pick on us. We should see it for what it is and approach it from a practical and scientific angle.

Chillipeanuts · 15/05/2020 09:46

Losing weight is always a good idea (if you’re overweight, obviously!) for so many health reasons. Likewise, being underweight needs to be addressed too, particularly in settings such as care homes.

Good luck to him. He’s talking sense (this once Grin)

Weallhavevalidopinions · 15/05/2020 09:47

That is a massive improvement to your health. I must say I never snored until I became heavier. I don't have most of the problems you had but my knees definitely feel the strain of my extra weight.

I am going to try from today. Walk this morning before a meeting later. Thanks for the answers which have spurred me on. No idea long term if I will succeed but got to try.

I find lockdown makes me pile on the pounds. I usually bike daily (not WFH) and with the kids at home, there is a lot of baking going on.

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 15/05/2020 09:49

Look!

....Fat Squirrel

Dickorydockwhatthe · 15/05/2020 09:49

Well since lockdown I've actually come out of this over weight 😭😭

SomeHalfHumanCreatureThing · 15/05/2020 09:50

Being overweight makes you at risk of early death already. Are people that irrationally afraid of coronavirus that this will make them get healthy when cancer, heart disease and dementia didn't?

Diseases like this seem so far away to me, there's a definite 'it won't happen to me' feeling there (yes, I know it's stupid, I'm just being honest).

Covid is more immediate, and feels more of a threat at the moment (to me. Again, relatively, it's probably bollocks)

This'll hopefully spur me on to be a bit less fat now. That can only be a good thing.
