Boris declares war on fat

Weallhavevalidopinions · 15/05/2020 09:25

Boris has said his being overweight contributed to his problems with Covid-19.
Stories this morning suggest he will wage war on fat...

What type of help do you think might be suggested?

Have you decided to lose weight due to Covid-19 worries?

YABU - no I will not lose weight due to Covid worries
YANBU - I will lose weight due to Covid worries

It's motivated me - my BMI was 29.4 and now it's 26.2. I'm aiming to get it below 24.

Glad to see that Boris is practising what he preaches (for once!)

Weallhavevalidopinions · 15/05/2020 09:50

I wasn't aware of this:

"BIWI Fri 15-May-20 09:45:46

I have signed up. I will need people in the same position to keep me going!
Thanks for sharing.

Some people being willfully ignorant on this thread. Read the posts, and read the articles upthread. Lots of useful info.

bakedbeanzontoast · 15/05/2020 09:51

Yes they won't open the gyms though 🙄

heartsonacake · 15/05/2020 09:52

I think this is great. Far too long there’s been all this “body acceptance” stuff which is great when it’s not causing you severe medical issues.

We’ve been having to tiptoe around the fat issue and it’s just lead to people thinking it’s okay and we need to just love our bodies for what they are, not take an active role in maintaining them to a decent standard.

AdoptAdaptImprove · 15/05/2020 09:52

I’m a couple of stone overweight always because of PCOS, so I’ve been fighting it since my hormones went whacko in my thirties, but now I’ve hit perimenopause it’s much harder to shift. Joy. I also have arthritic knees so exercise is limited to fairly gentle stuff, and have severe acid reflux so suffer greatly if I don’t eat regularly. My body hates me, I swear! I do still try for weight loss, and I eat very healthily, but lockdown hasn’t helped recently.

bumblenbean · 15/05/2020 09:52

I have quite an amusing image of boris releasing a fitness video... Although actually the thought of BoJo in Lycra is anything but amusing Shock

Tulipstulips · 15/05/2020 09:54

I lost 3 stone between last summer and this spring, and Covid-19 has made me bloody glad I did. But unfortunately I suspect I've put about 10lbs back on in lockdown from boredom-induced snacking, so I'm trying really hard to be strict again. Saying that, I've just had three sultana cookies for breakfast!

Maybe he will put Rishi up for the fitness vid - far better...

redcarbluecar · 15/05/2020 09:55

I've put YABU because although I DO need to lose weight, I won't be doing it because 'Boris' has declared a war on it according to the Daily Mail.

Tulipstulips · 15/05/2020 09:56

It's not helped by premature menopause that started almost immediately after I had my son, in my late 30s - I doubt I'll ever get close to my pre-baby weight!

ducksback · 15/05/2020 09:56

The portly tosser should start with himself
Fat wanker!

You do realise that this post makes you look both stupid (for missing the point of the thread completely) and ignorant for flinging abuse. Nice one.

lubeybooby · 15/05/2020 09:56

@ducksback

it's taken three years so far

complete about turn in lifestyle as I said - I realised I needed a system that I wasn't looking for the end of because there is no end. If you end a diet and go back to what you were doing before then you're up shit creek again before you know it, so it has to be a complete new normal forever.

I also realised the things I did to supposedly make life easier were making it worse. Namely takeaways and no exercise.

I used to eat takeaways all the time because i was too knackered to cook. This only made it worse, a vicious cycle as I kept getting bigger and even more knackered. No exercise. Insomnia and then poor sleep once I got there due to sleep apnoea and snoring.

Accurate and meticulous calorie control (I use loseit app) is first and foremost. I made myself start cooking from scratch all the time to help with that and a walk a day. I also stopped drinking. I need all my calories for food with my huge appetite so never drink my calories.

At first with walks I could only go maybe 1km and have to keep sitting down all the time en route. Now I can go 20km no problem

I banned naps, kept a good sleep schedule (up at 7am no matter what, my body soon got the idea) and started supplements of vitamin D as mine was so low it was in potential osteomalacia territory

I kept doing it and still do it now. 30 mins on the elliptical a day at the moment.

Inpeace · 15/05/2020 09:56

Well here’s the thing Boris is right on this

If he follows the science rather then the old eat less love more and shame/guilt if you can’t stick to it then I believe he and anyone who listens will be metabolically much better off (and slimmer)

Much better for us all to put effort into this than the other petty squabbles the politicians get dragged into imo

Most of us love or rely on someone with a BMI over 25 if we are not that person ourselves.

ChipotleBlessing · 15/05/2020 09:56

The only politician who could currently lead this campaign with any integrity is Tom Watson. Lost weight sensibly and put his diabetes into remission. I think only someone who’s done it can have the level of empathy needed to convince anyone.

SomeHalfHumanCreatureThing · 15/05/2020 09:57

Fat wanker!"

He HAS! That's the fucking point. Read the thread.

MorrisZapp · 15/05/2020 09:58

I think the entire point is that the portly tosser has indeed started with himself. Or do you think he's currently accusing others of being fat while claiming he himself is the model of health?

ducksback · 15/05/2020 09:58

lubey you have done brilliantly and your advice is great.

Terralee · 15/05/2020 09:58

Yanbu but actually I'd already decided to lose weight... I'm 12st11lbs & I need to get down to 10st2lb to be in the healthy BMI for my height.
I feel breathless quite often, but I feel I don't look too bad & luckily have an attractive hourglass figure but it just needs slimming down.
And I have noticed that sadly many of those who have died from covid were overweight.

SomeHalfHumanCreatureThing · 15/05/2020 09:58

Seems to be that this is going to be ignored, just because Boris is saying it (as demonstrated by the couple of people I've spoken to about it this morning).

vanillandhoney · 15/05/2020 09:59

Being overweight makes you at risk of early death already. Are people that irrationally afraid of coronavirus that this will make them get healthy when cancer, heart disease and dementia didn't?

Isn't it because Coronavirus is happening right now, whereas cancer, heart disease and dementia are generally things that people in their 30's and 40's don't really worry about yet?

I mean, you can be generally pretty healthy and overweight, so many people just don't worry about it because they think they're young and have time to sort it out before it actually becomes a problem.

Whereas Coronavirus is happening now and killing people of all ages. It's well known that being overweight is a huge contributing factor to ending up in ICU, so I think it's natural for people to suddenly feel the fear.

But anything that encourages people to lose weight is a good thing, surely? People shouldn't be slammed and criticised for trying.

ducksback · 15/05/2020 10:00

Yes some people are just dense though - politically tribal idiots who will ignore him and abuse him because he is not on their 'side'.

viewfromthecouch · 15/05/2020 10:00

Long overdue. We've normalised being fat in this country. People who are overweight look at other people and because they look similar, think they're all just fine. They're not.

Diabetes is also tied to faring poorly if you catch Covid, and diabetes is frequently tied to being fat/obese. Read something where they looked at those who had died from Covid between 2 dates, and 25% or so had diabetes. Staggering.
