It should make us hopeful !! Lockdown will definitely be eased and life could go back a bit to normal !

OP posts:
squiglet111 · 15/05/2020 09:28

Has anyone noticed that since lockdown lifted in Wuhan there hasn't been many reported rise of infections. There has been some but not huge numbers. They came out of strict lockdown early April.

So to me that's a bit of hope....yes infections will happen after lockdown but if a majority of people have had it then heard immunity can happen... So I am going to stay positive and hope that this means things are getting better!

SoupDragon · 15/05/2020 09:29

Ignore the dementors on this thread- they absolutely hate that things are looking up. They want this to continue for psychological reasons of their own.

Utter nonsense.

GoldenOmber · 15/05/2020 09:29

You only need to look at the other countries to see they are having increases after reopening.

They're seeing increases in the R number, obviously. That doesn't mean the R is over 1 though. Even if it went up from 0.4 to 0.9 in London the number of new cases would still be falling.

Gawdsake2020 · 15/05/2020 09:29

But there’s still people who are sick in the U.K.? Lol! Forget those flying in, they couldn’t even quarantine and trace them the first time let alone the second time.
All it takes is one person! That nurse coming back from their shift just infected going shopping, that bin man emptying bins with the virus on his gloves, that delivery driver etc etc. You can’t quarantine everyone! They don’t have the ability to do that or else we wouldn’t be in this mess to begin with. 🙇🏻‍♀️

itsaweddingone · 15/05/2020 09:29

Imagine if Londoners started acting the way that people from Devon and Cornwall have been - stay out of our city, we don’t want you here. Come back next year!

It’s in nearly every paper - it’s unlikely to happen but people asking for a source a so cringe. Read the news.

LuckyMarmiteLover · 15/05/2020 09:30

Great to read some good news at last. Together with the antibody test I feel things are starting to look up.

Aposterhasnoname · 15/05/2020 09:31

OP- this is BRILLIANT news and I agree. Finally a light at the end of the tunnel.

Ignore the dementors on this thread- they absolutely hate that things are looking up. They want this to continue for psychological reasons of their own.

This. Whilst I doubt it will be totally eradicated, only the most determined dementor can suggest that this isn’t a very hopeful sign.

Bollss · 15/05/2020 09:32

But there’s still people who are sick in the U.K.?

Yes of course there is but you specifically asked about people coming in from other countries. Now I've solved that conundrum for you you've moved on to but but but but it only takes one person.

It does. That's why we are social distancing.

I don't think you really understand.

We don't need to quarantine the whole country. We need to keep the R rate down.

RainMustFall · 15/05/2020 09:32

You may disagree with the OP but there's no need to be so fucking rude. It's on the front pages of newspapers, she didn't make it up and I bet you feel stupid now..

vodkaredbullgirl · 15/05/2020 09:33

Yep and there are unicorns, fairies and pixies running and flying around too.

Saz12 · 15/05/2020 09:35

If a part of the country is declared virus free (or with such a small R0 that it could be monitored/etc), would it not make sense to stop travel into that area but release lockdown within it..?

So, when a very low R0 in (this is a theoretical example) Birmingham, or Grampian, or wherever that area is allowed some more freedoms ;and an economy!) but travel to it is banned. Not about “using Scotland as Guinea pig” or “everyone hates London” or “no-one is interested in the North East” or anything else.

Obviously would never happen as we’re just so divided as a country it would be political suicide.

chomalungma · 15/05/2020 09:35

It's great if the virus 'goes away'.

But surely it takes just a few infected people to 'reseed' the virus like before......

Quartz2208 · 15/05/2020 09:35

www.mrc-bsu.cam.ac.uk/tackling-covid-19/nowcasting-and-forecasting-of-covid-19/

Here is the research group that did it and is feeding directly into a sub group of SAGE and PHE

It shows though that a regional approach for it is appropriate (I always thought London should have lockdown first) to remove Lockdown.

greathat · 15/05/2020 09:37

It would be nice if they could do a big roll out of the antibody test so we could know if people had had it

Drivingdownthe101 · 15/05/2020 09:38

Of course it does chomalungma. But the whole
aim of the measures we’ve taken have been to get the cases down to manageable numbers, which that article suggests we have (in London). Which is good news. I don’t think anyone is suggesting celebrating by going around licking the seats and hand rails in the London Underground, and there is off course still a lot of work to do, but it’s a positive step.

Nanalisa60 · 15/05/2020 09:39

Well I suspect that a lot of people have already had it in London!!

Let’s wait eight weeks and see before we hang out the punting!!

angstridden2 · 15/05/2020 09:39

Of course cities won’t be totally virus free, we’re so crowded into a very small area and the transport system is one giant Petri dish, but can we just be glad that numbers are so reduced from the terrifying storm we had. We’re not naive, but surely we can take some encouragement from this...or would that spoil some posters’ pleasure?

Theluggage15 · 15/05/2020 09:43

It’s good news op that it’s being brought under control and that will definitely help in keeping on top of it I should think.

Thank you for sharing the positive news, it’s a shame some people seem to want to hear only bad news, I feel sorry for them.

Zeusthemoose · 15/05/2020 09:46

'Ignore the dementors on this thread- they absolutely hate that things are looking up. They want this to continue for psychological reasons of their own.'

This ^

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter agree totally with your statement.

Msmcc1212 · 15/05/2020 09:49

WHO recently said it is likely to be with us forever. Even a vaccine might not get rid. What will change is more immunity and better treatments.

Aposterhasnoname · 15/05/2020 09:54

And let’s keep in mind that this has happened despite the pictures of people packed on Westminster bridge clapping, and packed on tube trains.

We are winning, whatever the doom mongers think.

HairyFloppins · 15/05/2020 09:58

Great to read some positive news. It is possible to control this virus. Hopefully they test and trace now to keep numbers low in London.

LangClegsInSpace · 15/05/2020 10:01

I think its important to note that both SARS and MERS 'burnt out' naturally before a safe vaccine could make it to market.

No they didn't. SARS was actively chased down and eradicated through case finding and isolation, contact tracing and quarantine.

MERS has not quite been eradicated yet, there are still occasional outbreaks, but they are contained very fast through the use of the same measures.

If these figures are accurate then it's very good news for London, NOT because it means we can all just shout hurrah and go back to normal, but because it means we are in a good position to put in place a properly integrated test, isolate, trace and quarantine strategy.

And if we can do that we can come out of lockdown with a far lower risk of a second wave.

Drivingdownthe101 · 15/05/2020 10:02

Exactly.

Bleepbloopblarp · 15/05/2020 10:03

But surely it takes just a few infected people to 'reseed' the virus like before......

Some people on here don’t seem to understand how herd immunity works. If enough people get it (ie in the article they are suggesting it could be sound 25%) they then act as a barrier from other people (who haven’t had it) catching it. This then stops it running rife again.

Whether you believe once you’ve had it you become immune (and most scientists do seem to think this) or not is another matter but if you don’t well, as a pp said - you are basically then discounting the effectiveness of a vaccine also.
So where do we go from there? Shut down the world forever!
